Westministenders: Boris Johnson Broke The Law

RedToothBrush · 24/09/2019 11:05

ITS OFFICIAL
The Highest Court in the Land has ruled that Boris Johnson has broken the law.

Parliament is Sovereign.

Despite the calls for his resignation it is highly unlikely he will under the current political climate.

It must be stressed that the judgement was UNAMINOUS and went further than most expected, and took the hardest possible line again the government

The power now lies with the Speakers of the Lords and Commons to decide when Parliament reopens.

It also means that all the bills which were ended by proroguation are now back in play.

Expect a full backlash from the hard right attacking the courts are going full on 'enemies of the people'. This will be NASTY

The strength of this ruling does pretty much rule out another proroguation as the courts are liable to throw it out immediately if they try it on again.

Johnson is in New York. He needs to get on a plane very quickly.

"I see it as a group of diverse people, mostly never having never met, who share a common belief in the Rule of Law over a corrupt Government and Prime Minister."

And I see it as a bunch of people who are not looking far enough down the road at the electoral disaster that looms!!

I'm Remain, btw!

Mistigri · 24/09/2019 17:04

I don't really understand the Remainer jubilation about this.

It's not very complicated, though.

  • many people believe that it is important that the government faces parliamentary oversight
  • we are attached to old-fashioned concepts like the rule of law
  • and of course, some of us enjoy rubbing leavers' noses in parliamentary sovereignty
mummmy2017 · 24/09/2019 17:04

Boris will win on a vote of him against Parliament, the Courts and Remain.
The Tory's know this and will use it.
He is why they will win, and win big .
Failed English, don't give dam that I did.
It doesn't mean I am wrong .
Your echo chamber means you are so sure you are so right, yet each time your logic fails. I mean that logic says we should never still be thinking no deal could happen

NotaRealLawyer · 24/09/2019 17:07

Your echo chamber
Ahhhh!
The big reveal!

tobee · 24/09/2019 17:07

verticality maybe it's this morning was a battle won if not the war? I don't think most posters on here are at all short sighted and certainly don't dismiss the possibility of a Tory majority at the next GE. And what we all think/say on here makes very little difference in the wider scheme of things.

placemats · 24/09/2019 17:07

Why do you want a no deal on Brexit Mummy?

BigChocFrenzy · 24/09/2019 17:07

BJ plans to leave with No Deal
The talk of a new WA is his bollocks to distract people from this
The EU say his proposals are basically the nonsense they rejected over a year ago

If Parliament wish to consider the WA again, they just need to first vote to change the Standing Order preventing this.

However, iirc voting on the WA again is in the Kinnock amendment to the Benn bill - to be done if there is no extension
So that might obviate the need to change the S.O.

BeardedMum · 24/09/2019 17:08

Isn’t this what the leavers campaigned for? Taking back parliament’s control?

Why wasn't it a violation of our human rights that MP's decided, without consent, to sign off our democratic rights to the EU in the first place?

They had our consent when they were voted into office to represent us. MPs may be delegates in your country, but they are not here. Basic stuff, you ought to know before spouting a load of rubbish.

pumkinspicetime · 24/09/2019 17:13

And I see it as a bunch of people who are not looking far enough down the road at the electoral disaster that looms!!

I think we are looking beyond that.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/09/2019 17:13

"And I see it as a bunch of people who are not looking far enough down the road at the electoral disaster that looms"

The ruling avoided the far greater disaster - including if there is a large Tory win - of having established that the PM is above the law
Retaining at least the bare bones of a functional democracy is vital

It also made No Deal on 31 October less likely, as the PM dare not now flout the law on the extension either
So it reduced the chance of imminent disaster

mrslaughan · 24/09/2019 17:13

@mummmy2017 I don't care about bad spelling etc - mine is appalling- but your turn of phrase is sometimes unusual. It often makes it difficult to understand your point.

I am delighted about ruling as it means we are still a functioning democracy.
I am a remainer who like ref believe we need to leave. Mostly I want that orderly so that food and drug shortages are minimised and people don't die because of it. Then people like you and grass come along and I think fuck it - I am insulated from this, I have a stock pile of food and the ability to leave the country when it turns to shit. Let them have their no deal - and I would enjoy watching you squeal about the injustice of it all......but it is only for a second - the. I revert to worrying about everyone.

I simply don't understand that an election is democratic and fair, the European Elections were democratic and fair but another referendum is simply undemocratic and totally unjust.

The UK has had 3 elections in the last 9 years and two referendums (you cannot include the Scottish independence referendum).

What's the gripe?

DGRossetti · 24/09/2019 17:16

Is someone at the Met Police having a laugh?! ...Dominic Cummins has been #JAILED

Along with the story about Franco, it's hard not to think The Universe is Saying Something ....

mummmy2017 · 24/09/2019 17:18

I want no deal as Parliament has shown themselves to be liars, they promise and then back track or sit on the fence, it is like they refuse to see how a lack of trust will effect things.
This last few months have shown this.

Alsohuman · 24/09/2019 17:19

Why wasn't it a violation of our human rights that MP's decided, without consent, to sign off our democratic rights to the EU in the first place?

I distinctly remember voting to be part of the EU back in the 70s.

placemats · 24/09/2019 17:19

The talk of a new WA is his bollocks to distract people from this

Please, can we not?

BigChocFrenzy · 24/09/2019 17:20

"Why wasn't it a violation of our human rights that MP's decided, without consent, to sign off our democratic rights to the EU in the first place?"

The democratically elected Tory govt of Ted Heath took us into the then Common Market in 1972

In 1975, the referendum was won by Remain with 67.2 %, with both sides telling us during the campaign that this meant "ever closer union"

Over the following 4 decades, democratically elected UK govts - both Tory & Labour - negotiated and signed off on all the developments that developed the EU as it is today

BeardedMum · 24/09/2019 17:21

Okay mummmy, but this is democracy....

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 24/09/2019 17:21

Verticallity how will an election happen? The last no confidence vote failed to secure an election. The Conservatives introduced the fixed term act, so there’s no way out that way.
All the opposition parties are united against Boris, even if not united with each other. Why would they vote with a no confidence vote when they have some control over issues that may disappear with a general election?

I thought the only way to get an election was for Boris to request a no confidence motion in himself. Which admittedly he is capable of!

placemats · 24/09/2019 17:22

I want no deal as Parliament has shown themselves to be liars, they promise and then back track or sit on the fence, it is like they refuse to see how a lack of trust will effect things. This last few months have shown this.

Are you wanting to be taken seriously? Or are you wishing on a star to be derided and scorned?

tobee · 24/09/2019 17:23

But mummy why does that add up to no deal?

tobee · 24/09/2019 17:24

placemats puts it far better than I.
