Westminstenders: "He's in trouble". No he's not.

RedToothBrush · 06/09/2019 00:48

All day I've seen nothing but comments and tweets about he Johnson is in trouble and he's losing it.

They are wrong. He's far from done.

Take a step through the Looking Glass and the world looks different.

Those tweeting and reporting all care about events and are following closely. They are unrepresentative of the population as a whole who don't give two shiny shits.

And so we have the Trump dynamic.

The Liberal elite of broadcasters and journalists who are only seeing through the lens of their own judgement, not from the repackaged marketing.

Instead they are unwittingly publishing the images and slogans in the format Johnson wants and enter the minds of the public as planned.

The media are out of step with perceptions. And that's worrying. They don't see what's coming.

Johnson will have an election at some point. With the Tory party cleansed of moderates it is the Brexit Party one way or another, whether it be by takeover or coalition. And its riding high in the polling.

Even though even his brother has abandoned him, the future looks positive for Johnson as his opponents have a complete lack of self awareness and no understanding of the opposition they are taking on; they are campaigning in a way that plays into the hands of Johnson.

Despite his lack of majority and apparently absence of plan or speech notes, the biggest mistake you can make now is to write off Johnson.

You do so at your own peril.

Pay close attention to how authoritarians work and what's already happened in the US. We are on course to repeat it.

What I mean is make it clear nobody from the Allies will hold another referendum, and if the Tories want to Brexit they can sort it.

Sarahlou63 · 06/09/2019 14:43

From the Guardian live feed;

"Boris Johnson has said he will win a new Brexit deal at next month’s EU summit by using his “powers of persuasion”, and rejected calls for a further extension to article 50.

The prime minister said he had no plans to accept the new legislation which would require him to write to the EU asking for a “pointless” delay to Brexit, during a visit to Aberdeenshire on Friday."

(my bold).

CendrillonSings · 06/09/2019 14:44

Corbyn isn't someone I have much time for but he really isn't someone who backs out of situations.

He's backing out of an election that he spent two years whining about as we speak.

And don't give me the excuse that Boris could change the date - if Parliament can force the PM to ask for an extension by a specific date, it could pass a Bill that mandates a specific GE date by law. But Corbyn won't do that because he knows he'd get creamed.

An Opposition that refuses an election is pretty much putting out a big sign that reads "Too Shit To Win" - perhaps Corbyn could adopt that as his next slogan!

Inniu · 06/09/2019 14:44

@bellinisurge

Have you been talking to Peter Foster? He is tweeting about how an NI only back stop might still happen

pumkinspicetime · 06/09/2019 14:44

Ignoring the law is one of the few options he has and one of the most likely.

bellinisurge · 06/09/2019 14:46

@Inniu , perhaps he's a Mumsnetter. Smile

I've never voted Labour, I would be unlikely to do so. But I am very heartened that Corbyn has enough common sense to understand that it is not the job of the opposition to be manipulated into elections that benefit the government most.
It is the job of opposition to oppose in the most effective way possible.
Currently this is ensuring that no deal Brexit is prevented.
With the opposition parties working together on this there is no need to waste time we don't have on a GE.

Tactics, isn't it? Easier to beat Johnson in November when he's been forced to break his 'leave on 31st october, do or die' promise and has an angry Brexit party splitting his vote.

"On difficult ground, keep steadily on the march."

Apileofballyhoo · 06/09/2019 14:55

Brexit will not go away if we revoke.

I don't think it's going to go away by Brexiting either.

DGRossetti · 06/09/2019 14:57

When it comes to "chicken" one W. S. Churchill did say "It's better to jaw-jaw than to war-war".

And personally I dislike and distrust people that are keen to see other people die in wars for them. And sadly that phrase isn't as metaphorical as it should be.

PerkingFaintly · 06/09/2019 14:58

Well, that Tory poster takes me back... to all the other Tory posters illustrating things the Tories have done and blamed on Labour.

• "Labour isn't working" – pic of dole queue during Tory govt.
• Poster of street riots suggesting Labour would cause unrest – riots occurred under Tory govt.

The Tories keep doing this because it keeps working.

That Brexit poster needs the colours and parties switched. It could have a minor addition showing the "straight through" image going into a toilet, and a side outlet to the happy sunlit uplands of a Best for Britain Brexit: intervention by our heroes saves the day!

In fact, "Best for Britain Brexit" should be the slogan for the anti-No Dealers. At the moment they've got nothing positive to cluster around.

"I might not agree with Brexit, but now the people have voted leave I'm determined to get the Best Brexit for Britain – not chaos from the Tories who couldn't strike a deal."

Sorry, I know this isn't a campaigning thread. But it annoys me that the opposition is so hopeless at fielding this sort of stunt when it's so predictable.

CendrillonSings · 06/09/2019 14:58

That does rather assume that those voters are so stupid that they won't be able to tell that Corbyn engineered the delay for precisely that reason, and that Boris did everything in his power to stop it, including expelling a couple of dozen MPs from his own party.

Maybe those voters are that stupid. But I suspect Corbyn has a bit of an electoral surprise coming if he thinks his own machinations aren't totally transparent.

Basilpots · 06/09/2019 15:02

@bellinisurge He has an excellent rant on Choppers Brexit Podcast this week worth a listen.

DGRossetti · 06/09/2019 15:02

Someone in Labour HQ has a copy of 'The Art of War'

That's a pity. Instead of wasting time reading it, they could simply be throwing Boris lies back at him, and force him to admit them.

Remember he went on TV to tell the nation he didn't want an election ? Well we agree with him, so we won't force one.

Rinse and repeat.

Remember he's got some results from his negotiations ? Let's see them.

Rinse and repeat.

Remember he's solved the backstop ? Let's hear how.

Rinse and repeat.

I'm sure there are a few others, but those should do.

pumkinspicetime · 06/09/2019 15:02

Likewise I think Johnson may be in for a surprise if he imagines that all Tory voters are in favor of expelling the 21 moderate conservatives from the party, particularly given some of the names included.

QueenOfThorns · 06/09/2019 15:03

I would certainly hope so, as we know that Cummings is a fan! It would help them work out what he’s up to and how best to counter it.

DGRossetti · 06/09/2019 15:05

Interesting that this Telegraph piece hasn't been picked up more ...

www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2019/09/03/corbyn-better-no-deal-brexit-say-investment-banks-anti-capitalist/

Jeremy Corbyn, the scourge of bankers and avowed opponent of capitalism, is winning support from unexpected new quarters: two of the biggest global banks operating in the City of London are warming to the Labour leader.

Unlikely as it may seem, he is now seen as the lesser of two evils by analysts at Citibank and Deutsche Bank, respectively American and German titans of the financial system.

(contd)

Peregrina · 06/09/2019 15:06

Pity isn't it, that the Fixed Term Parliaments Act came in under a Tory led administration and now it's being used by the opposing parties to thwart Johnson?

Alsohuman · 06/09/2019 15:08

A new level of childishness has been reached. Apparently a delivery of KFC has been made to lobby correspondents, courtesy of the Tory party.

I've just had that thought again. Of Clegg calling up and just laughing down the phone line ...

I hope there's a homeless shelter somewhere that can take them quickly.

A really quick PR team would organise a quick Facebook "donate £value of bucket to local food bank" campaign just to get nice publicity on the back of it.

God, I'm wasted here Grin

Bearbehind · 06/09/2019 15:10

He's backing out of an election that he spent two years whining about as we speak.

Exactly this

For the last 2 years his stock response to every Brexit related question has been to call for a GE.

Then, when he’s offered one, he changes his tune.

I don’t entirely disagree with his rationale for not going ahead with it now however it just goes to show how pointless and ineffective his calls for one always were - thus how pathetic his opposition to this mess has been

DGRossetti · 06/09/2019 15:11
