Does anyone here actively WANT no deal?

And if so why, and how do you expect it to play out if that's the outcome?

don't be so patronising, Mama, you are not the only one here who speaks English as she should be spoke.

It's definitely not local it's been around for yonks. My mum's always used it and she's in her 70s, i suspect she got it from her parents.

BertrandRussell · 05/09/2019 15:18

@Mamamia456 - I first commented on your post because I wanted to stop you making an idiot of yourself. You’re still in danger of that now if you don’t stop.

timegoingtoofast · 05/09/2019 15:20

I think it's bizarre that people think a no deal Brexit will be the end of it.

It'll be the beginning of decades of tortuous wrangling with Europe and other countries. We'll be talking about blinking Brexit and the aftermath forever, most likely while watching the UK sink, and the tossers we have in power blaming it on everyone but themselves for getting us into this mess in the first place.

berlinbabylon · 05/09/2019 15:35

UK embraces a view that SM is something awful

No it doesn't. In fact it was an architect of it.

But some of our lovely Tory politicians don't like it because of freedom of movement and because it requires common laws and standards, so they can't exploit workers as much as they want to.

Please can we stop conflating the UK with a small number of rich, greedy and frankly nasty politicians?

countrygirl99 · 05/09/2019 15:35

If people are so confused by a very common expression, no wonder we got brexit

Mamamia456 · 05/09/2019 16:09

Brefugee - My mum has never used it, neither has anyone else in my family or friends or people I work with.

BertrandRussell - I'm not the one who keeps going on about it. Other people keep bringing it up.

Countrygirl - I'm not confused by it, it's just not something that is said in my part of the country.

Alsohuman · 05/09/2019 16:18

Then don’t mention it any more and let it die.

whyamidoingthis · 05/09/2019 16:19

@Alsohuman - It isn’t a local expression. I suspect the origin here is incorrect as my gran used it before gamers were invented.

Definitely not a local expression. And most definitely older than gaming. I'm old and Irish and have used it for yonks. However, it's usually that'll learn 'em

And I talk proper, so I'd know Grin

whyamidoingthis · 05/09/2019 16:27

@Molteni - And present really; with that excellent Secretary of state that was unaware that they vote along sectarian lines in NI…

And don't forget Priti Patel suggesting we could be starved into submission.

caringcarer · 05/09/2019 16:28

I would far rather leave with a simple trade deal but this is very unlikley now as Corbyn has told EU they can dictate their own terms for an extension so EU will not bother to try to negotiate a better deal for UK. I think yesterdays actions will mean Boris is forced to go for a no deal or WTO deal and a series of mini deals to smooth way for both UK and EU. He may have to get a simple trade deal after we leave now.

We know a bill can be rushed through parliament in 4-5 days now so they could have waited until Oct 14th and if no trade deal then to go for legislation to make yet another delay. That is why many know Corbyn does not really want to leave at all.

Notonthestairs · 05/09/2019 16:46

What is a simple trade deal?

Notonthestairs · 05/09/2019 16:47

Not being sarky BTW - genuine question.

Alsohuman · 05/09/2019 16:50

It’s a lot like a unicorn @Notonthestairs.

whyamidoingthis · 05/09/2019 17:06

@Alsohuman - It’s a lot like a unicorn

That's exactly what it is. There will be no trade deal, simple or otherwise, until the backstop or another mechanism to protect the border is agreed, the bill is paid and citizens rights agreed.

LaurieMarlow · 05/09/2019 17:11

What would make anyone think a ‘simple trade deal’ was on the cards?

Or that Bojo, who has made no progress whatsoever with Brussels (by basically everyone’s admission) was going to deliver one?

There aren’t enough wtf emojis in the world

BogglesGoggles · 05/09/2019 17:15

@BrainFart I don’t have an EU passport. I haven’t experienced long queues as a result. Don’t think you have much to worry about there.

BogglesGoggles · 05/09/2019 17:18

@Span1elsRock negotiating trade deals with the EU no matter how enthusiastic both side are is a long (and often fruitless) process. I wouldn’t hold my breath.

LaurieMarlow · 05/09/2019 17:28

People’s lack of understanding about what’s going on, as illustrated by caringcarer is downright terrifying.

Herocomplex · 05/09/2019 17:31

Yep LaurieMarlow I thought the same. It’s just words in a random order, usually followed by the ‘just get on with it’ yelp.

Miljah · 05/09/2019 17:40

Sorry to bang on about 'overseas qualifications' but I promise you every word I wrote is true.

If the general view is that if we have a deal or no deal we will still need to thrash out a lot of details, wouldn’t we be better to rip off the plaster as quickly as possible and get on with dealing with it?

LaurieMarlow · 05/09/2019 22:15

wouldn’t we be better to rip off the plaster as quickly as possible and get on with dealing with it?

The problem with ripping off the plaster is that if it’s done too soon it exposes gaping, open wounds.

So we rip off the plaster we cause medicine and food shortages, badly disrupt the workings of small (and large business), force a hard border in NI this risking the destabilising of the area, start all our negotiations with Europe on a bad note.

I can’t think of anything more fucking dumb than ripping off the plaster in this case, but, y’know, each to his own.

mightyminty · 05/09/2019 22:20

But Laurie we’re not getting anywhere are we?

Good, bad or otherwise is better than uncertainty

Alsohuman · 05/09/2019 22:23

It really isn’t. The thought of crashing out terrifies me.
