It looks like Johnson is getting ready to call an election

So why might that be? (genuine question, struggling to follow all this stuff)
Is he anticipating a huge win, giving him a mandate for what he does next? A bit like May in 2017?

So inheritance tax is the single biggest issue facing this country today? Fuck me, that’s depressing!

woman19 · 02/09/2019 18:53

It will be a contest to see who has the biggest dick.
You mis spelt 'is' there peregrina Grin

Lex234 · 02/09/2019 18:54

I know we are now a nation of social media documentarians and feel the need to share every single fucking moment of our lives, but did the Prime Minister, such as he is, really need to publicly announce he intends to focus on negotiating Brexit?

As if we were all expecting him to deal with much more pressing issues, such as learning to spin plates for a travelling circus or commisioning government research into the development of a parsley fueled space ship

Once again, the political arena baffles me. What a waste of time!

If Johnson calls an election and Corbyn supports him to get 66%, could Johnson hold it after the 31st Oct?

Lifebi · 02/09/2019 19:17

I've read somewhere that if he puts down a motion for election on 14th of October he can then use 'royal perogative' once it is passed to change the date to after Brexit.
Anyone confirm that?

BeardedMum · 02/09/2019 19:23

I don’t hate Corbyn but he can’t win an election and need to step aside now to give labour a chance.

woman19 · 02/09/2019 19:31

We are where we are. Right now Corbyn has the power to stop a GE and tory/brexit party landslide.

TheCaddyisaBaddie · 02/09/2019 19:36

If I remember rightly did KnobheadBJ only have a small majority at the last election, I think it was around 5000?

Itsfineactually · 02/09/2019 19:41

Fair enough @Ohflippineck but we all knew that he didn’t want a general election. I’m not sure where he got that WE don’t want a general election though.

Has anyone actually asked the general public their opinion recently... brexit vote doesn’t count, I mean since the general public haven’t had farage spouting shite at them?

LizzieSiddal · 02/09/2019 19:42

The only good thing to come out of an election will be that Corbyn will lose, again, and he will have to step down.

Ohflippineck · 02/09/2019 19:44

itsfineactually

Sorry, my sarcasm clearly wasn’t dripping enough Grin

My point was, he absolutely does want a GE. Just wants to be able to blame it on the “rebels” and pit himself and the public against them. Hence the “hey, public, I’m just like you .... I don’t want a GE”.

StealthPolarBear · 02/09/2019 19:47

Caddy what election?

OP posts:
Ohflippineck · 02/09/2019 19:50

I was reliably informed by BelliniSurge that his majority is 5,300. In Remainer Ruislip. I’m an atheist but I’ve been praying every night that he loses his seat. If he does, I’ll happily take up any religion the Almighty directs me too Grin

faceorembrace · 02/09/2019 19:55

If there is an election I am just not voting. I'll spoil my ballot. I really can't stand any of them. All my (by now quite long life) I've usually found one I could vote for in reasonable conscious but not now.

What a shower.

And as PP said, Corbyn or Johnson! How has it come to this? Makes me want us to stay in the EU just so I can emigrate..

TheCaddyisaBaddie · 02/09/2019 20:12

2017, last one. If the other parties work together and dont put candidates forward other than labour then there is a chance, a very strong chance especially (although unlikely) if The Brexit party dont.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 02/09/2019 22:11

"Corbyn must step down if they have any chance of winning said election."

But there's no chance he can be replaced in time for an October election

StealthPolarBear · 02/09/2019 22:18

But he didn't run in the last election did he. TM was leader.

OP posts:
MyGhastIsFlabbered · 02/09/2019 22:19

I was watching his speech live and was just in total disbelief that he was our PM...how the fuck did this happen,

StealthPolarBear · 02/09/2019 22:19

AllPowerfulLizardPerson may I be the first to suggest replacing him with a tub of lard?

OP posts:
Egghead68 · 03/09/2019 07:37

Stealth he ran as an MP and was elected in his constituency with a fairly slim majority. Wouldn’t it be a shame if he lost his seat this time round...

Bluntness100 · 03/09/2019 07:47

Farage and his brexit party are fighting labour, they are putting up MPs in labour strongholds. They are not going to fight the tories and he has confirmed it.

The reason Boris wants it after brexit is so he doesn't have the brexit party in Parliament after it's done , as they are a one trick pony, however it's very clear he will go to the poles before hand to attempt to seek a majority to get brexit through if parliament try to block it.

He won't move the election date if parliament succeed today in blocking no deal and forcing an extension. It will be before brexit. And if he gets a majority then he has a new government basically and can proceed to take us out. If he does not and looses, he walks away.

It's high risk poker.

StealthPolarBear · 03/09/2019 07:51

Ah thank you

OP posts:
PostNotInHaste · 03/09/2019 07:54

I’m not very awake but read that labour saying they will block election before 31 October. He needs two thirds of MPs to vote to agree to an election so assumably they can do this ?

Dogsarebetterthancatsok · 03/09/2019 08:05

There are loads of stuff online about Corbyn. Images showing his lies about not being a terrorist sympathiser. He hates Britain. He will
destroy Britain. He will turn this country into another Venezuela. He admires their policies. He has admitted that.

AuntieStella · 03/09/2019 08:27

I saw Shami Chakrabati on BBC Breakfast today.

My take from what she said is that Corbyn does not (yet) have enough rebels to win a 'no deal off' vote. It's not that she didn't give numbers - no one would expect her to - but the tone of the answer, which lacked confidence. So it became considerably easier for her to say that Labour would welcome a GE (because she doesn't think it terribly likely they'll be one soon?)
