So why might that be? (genuine question, struggling to follow all this stuff)
Is he anticipating a huge win, giving him a mandate for what he does next? A bit like May in 2017?

Trident, going after medium/high earners (80-120k) for higher taxes rather than focusing on corporation tax dodging, the simultaneous nationalisations and freezes on rates and fares meaning it still costs everyone more money, and having worked in HE, I don’t agree with free tuition fees either when so many essentials are on their knees. Going to university is a privilege not a right and it’s still possible for anyone who would like to to go. Insulin for diabetics and school meals for low income families are essentials. I disagree with the scattergun appeasement of the Manifesto. You cant make everyone happy so just pick things that are actually bloody necessary and FIX them. The NHS is dying on its arse - don’t piss around doing a review of country pubs.

FenellaMaxwell · 02/09/2019 09:37

And if he’d been firmly anti-Brexit from the get-go as labour should have been, we wouldn’t bloody be here.

MaximusHeadroom · 02/09/2019 09:42

he is pro-Brexit and he and his advisors are quite happy to see a Tory led Brexit whereby they get the Brexit they’re after while the Tories take the blame.

So, even if that is the case, why is that worse than the Tories bringing about Brexit and then bringing us to the brink of No Deal in order to further political ambitions within the party?

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2019 09:44

“Going after” high earners is a bit of a give away phrase! Of course high earners should pay more tax. And Labour policy is to put up corporation tax as well.

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2019 09:47

And Labour policy is to renew Trident. Corbyn is personally opposed, but accepts that it is Labour policy.

Helmetbymidnight · 02/09/2019 09:47

i have always disliked corbyn but i find the proper hate for him quite bizarre - plus ges only one man not the party. of course hes far preferable to a no deal brexit - (but if it comes to it ill hold my nose and vote lib dems)

MaximusHeadroom · 02/09/2019 09:48

And in terms of him needing to step down, in the last Election Jeremy Corbyn increased Labour's share of the vote by more than any other of the party's election leaders since 1945, including the swing New Labour and Blair got in 1997, so perhaps it is his predecessors who should take a share of the blame?

He just seems to be held to a very different set of standards to either his predecessors or the other party leaders.

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 09:55

Nope. I'm old. I know his type and I've seen his "work". He's a twat.
He's just slightly less of a twat than No Deal.

FenellaMaxwell · 02/09/2019 10:14

@BertrandRussell afraid it isn’t - NHS band 5 here.

DippyAvocado · 02/09/2019 10:25

Personally, I agree that no deal is much worse than Corbyn. The trouble is that the people we need to vote Labour (moderate Conservatives etc) in order to get rid of the current government will not vote for him, even in the face of no-deal. Rightly or wrongly, a certain public perception of him is out there and I don't think there's anything he can do to change that. Labour will not win an election under him and that's the bottom line.

If the idea of a national unity government gets through (unlikely I should think) I suppose he might be tolerated as a caretaker PM for a limited and time-specified period but as I read in the news even he is not pushing for that any more and would consider a unity candidate instead.

Bluntness100 · 02/09/2019 11:05

Bottom line is this is a huge week in politics and dictates a lot of what will happen,

There are many things going on, a legal challenge to prorogueing parliament, a possible motion to allow MPs to sit longer, a potential to get no deal legislation through and require an extension, and a likely but not inevitable move to a general election, depending on what occurs.

It really has become very very explosive in a way it wasn't with Teresa May who was much more moderate in her approach. Boris is playing extreme hard ball with all comers, be it the eu, or mps who rebel.

He doesn't want no deal. There is a lot of outcry and supposition, he's said he doesn't wish to have no deal, and he thinks the eu will capitulate at the eleventh hour,,, but that's a huge risk.

He certainly doesn't want to be Teresa May and be forced into asking for an extension, so he will take the risk over a general election if it comes to it. The eu are saying they may remove him deadline themselves of Oct 31 to take away the risk. I suspect thEy will if we move to a general election.

Right now he doesn't have a majority to make anything stick. A general election with all leaver mps could give him that power to get it done.

This week is beyond critical, but it's going to a be a roller coaster between now and October.

howabout · 02/09/2019 11:33

Agree with you mostly Bluntness but despite Gordon Brown's musings I don't think the EU can unilaterally remove the 31 October deadline and I don't see Boris accepting an offer to do so.

Agree with Stig Abel - provoke VoNC this week and election on 17 October.

The fact that this thread seems to be primarily discussing Corbyn, rather than whether Johnson is suitable to be PM again, is astonishing. Is that not an important question too?

StealthPolarBear · 02/09/2019 13:18

Thanks everyone

Exactly THIS ☝️

TatianaLarina · 02/09/2019 14:11

I’d say it’s roughly the same. Hence the fury with Corbyn as he’s a) not providing opposition which is his role and b) he’s not reflecting the wishes of the majority of his supporters who are Remainers.

Only 25-29% of Labour voters voted Leave.

TatianaLarina · 02/09/2019 14:12

Everyone knows the answer to that question.

woman19 · 02/09/2019 15:10

Corbyn's a moron, but not unique in that department.

An election now will give tories 150 seat majority.

Farridge will be given an easy seat.

He'll do a deal with Johnson who stays on as PM with Farridge as deputy.

Elections will then stop.

National emergency and all that.

Brexit needs to be neutered before Oct 31st through a referendum on the WA or Remain.

Lifebi · 02/09/2019 15:14

Corbyn will never get a majority on his own. The best that he could hope for is a coalition with the lib Dems and/or the SNP who would ensure his radical policies would never be implemented..
Boris on the other hand is moments away from driving us over a cliff and we have no idea what's on the other side.

TerfTalk · 02/09/2019 15:21

Please don't forget that Corbyn is a massive misogynist Sad

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2019 15:35

“Please don't forget that Corbyn is a massive misogynist“

As opposed to Johnson....

TerfTalk · 02/09/2019 15:50

Believe it or not, BJ is much less misogynistic than Corbin.

Corbin believes in the “lady brain” theory.

BJ has actually encouraged a lot of work that fights against FGM. Moreover, he spoke up when a woman was arrested for calling a person with XY chromosomes a “man”.

hahahahahaha

RuggerHug · 02/09/2019 17:32

BJ making a statement at 6 this evening.
