Brexit

Do any of the people who laughed and rolled their eyes at those of us stockpiling six months ago care to comment?

I seem to remember some rather scathing comments. I wonder how many are quietly buying a few extra bits each week and smugly congratulating themselves on being prepared. Forgetting the scorn and contempt.

OP posts:

@Tensixtysix , I give to food banks and, having lived through an actual coup , I think martial law and curfews sort out any twatty marauders.

twolobsters · 01/09/2019 21:26

StealthPolarBear "I'm aiming for a week, two at the most. We were snowed in for about a week I think in 2009"

What the actual fuck? All this fanfare and you're telling me you've purchased a 'stockpile' to last two weeks. That's just filling the cupboards surely?

It feels as though spreading fear about Brexit is a kind of sad hobby for some on MN.

I can't fathom why you would feel the need to post about a two week shop at all, never mind follow up with a goady post.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 01/09/2019 21:29

Do people really expect we’re going to be on WWII style rations? There are plenty of countries who aren’t in the EU, and somehow they aren’t being forced to survive on a pound of butter a week!

It was two ounces a week actually. Can you imagine how little that is? *Not that I'm saying it will be that bad.) And those other countries already have trade deals in place. We won't have, not for some time.

olllsss · 01/09/2019 21:29

Ooh this is the first stockpiling thread ive seen. I dont see whats wrong with it. Why are people laughing about that? there may not be a shortage ( i hope) but prices will defo be up. So if anything you'll have an advantage on cupboard staples as you got it much cheaper.

LizzieSiddal · 01/09/2019 21:36

I would imagine that, unless they are very hard of thinking, people are stockpiling alternatives to the fresh stuff precisely because we may not be able to get fresh stuff so the demand for tinned and frozen will rise. I'd imagine they are not stockpiling fresh carrots but tinned fruit and long life milk so they still have milk and fruit

I think we have enough evidence, on this and many other threads, that there are a lot of people who are indeed “hard of thinking”.

I know a Brexiteer, in rl who’s laughed at my Brexit stash. Yet last week she said if she runs out of anything, at least she’s knows where to come,Hmm I told her, she can eat all those Unicorns on the horizon.

ContinuityError · 01/09/2019 21:42

We will be in the unique situation though of being unable to trade with the EU until something gets sorted.

That’s wrong. Trade continues but on much less favourable terms and with more potential hold ups (hence the problems with fresh produce).

If the UK leaves on a chaotic no deal, then having enough basic supplies in to keep you going means you can avoid the shops when supplies are likely to be stressed.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 01/09/2019 21:49

@Ohflippineck

My post was quoting Silenceissilver's post on page 1 of the thread. If you are going to swear and rant at a poster make sure you get the right person and actually read the post.

mylifenow27 · 01/09/2019 21:49

Personally OP I think you come across as a bit of a nutter 🙈 you seem very obsessive and angry

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 21:53

I think there are plenty on this thread who have no idea what we've been talking about and just believe some bullshit foolishness because it's easier than checking.
A two week stockpile is pretty bloody substantial. If you thought it was something else you are deluded.

Miljah · 01/09/2019 21:57

Well, let's just see what the Governmental Advisories contain this week, shall, we, before we start calling anyone 'Nutters'? Or will it then all be 'Hwah, hwah, perfectly sound advice, what? Good show! A chap's got to be prepared, what?' Etc

The fact that there appears to be some supply-chain issues in Unicorn Delivery, already, might hint at some 'bumps' ahead, eh?

But, hey chaps, it's all okay, The Hun never cowed us/ no one starved/ jolly good!

But this isnt what Leave promised, is it?

Jamaica1966 · 01/09/2019 21:59

No I'm not stockpiling at all. I think it's completely pointless.

Let's revisit this topic in a few months and see who was right.

Span1elsRock · 01/09/2019 22:03

The only shortages will be created by stockpiling itself. It's like when it snows and people raid the supermarket shelves clean. Just pure and utter greed and most of it ends up in the bin. Supermarkets throw billions of £s worth of food away every year.

Oblomov19 · 01/09/2019 22:04

I think stockpiling is pointless. I will eat and use what I can.
What was the point of the stockpiling you did 6 mths ago? Do you yourself think it was worth it?

I have a critical illness. I need a drug every day. If I don't get it I'll die soon. So be it. No point worrying.

Evilmorty · 01/09/2019 22:08

It’s not really who is right or who is wrong because I’ll use all the things in my pile anyway.

It’s not like I will be looking at a generator or septic tank in my garage in October thinking “well that was a silly purchase”.

Tins get eaten. Whether we have food shortages or not.

S1naidSucks · 01/09/2019 22:14

olllsss there is actually a mumsnet section for preppers. It’s actually very interesting. I’m so impressed by how many people can be so well organised in case of emergencies, such as being snowed in.

vdbfamily · 01/09/2019 22:15

this will be a self fulfilling prophecy of everyone rushes out the week before and buy more than they need. The poorest will be most affected by this as cannot afford to stockpile. Most of us could survive a couple of weeks using fridge freezer and cupboard contents. I am hoping our local farms will do better as people have to buy more local produce too.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/09/2019 22:17

*I am hoping our local farms will do better as people have to buy more local produce too.(

Central London isn't known for its farms, I'm afraid.

S1naidSucks · 01/09/2019 22:17

The only shortages will be created by stockpiling itself.

Do you actually know what stockpiling is? It’s a slow steady build up if supplies, usually over weeks or months. It’s very different from panic buying. Honestly people! If you’re going to insult those that are taking precautions against any delays or shortages, at least understand the difference.

burberrybubbles · 01/09/2019 22:18

So people have been stockpiling for weeks/months to ensure that they have only enough food for perhaps a week-2 weeks post Brexit? Loopy

MorrisZapp · 01/09/2019 22:19

I haven't stockpiled anything. I'm worried that some people have take the brexit crisis scenario so much to heart that they are now invested in it being as bad as possible.

I'm a remainer, I don't support brexit at all but I expect the impact on my life to be fairly minimal. Ideally I won't notice any change at all, but let's see how it pans out.

It's the sense of building up to the world's biggest 'I told you so' that makes me think some people are relishing the idea of an actual crisis.

burberrybubbles · 01/09/2019 22:21

It's the sense of building up to the world's biggest 'I told you so' that makes me think some people are relishing the idea of an actual crisis
So true! And I was a remainer too

1FineDane · 01/09/2019 22:22

Last thread I saw from this OP was because her child was lying on the bed and she had gone mental on the poor child. Who then decamped to OP's bed lol.

OP, have you considered that you may be a little bit stressed at the moment? It can make tiny things seem huge.

This thread though is a bit pointless, as I haven't raided next door's cookie jar yet.

MorrisZapp · 01/09/2019 22:22

And many of these people believe Britain to be in crisis already anyway. NHS in crisis. Education in crisis. Fuel poverty. Period poverty. Food banks.

Is that actually crisis, or is there another level, with a different name?

georgialondon · 01/09/2019 22:23
