Brexit

Do any of the people who laughed and rolled their eyes at those of us stockpiling six months ago care to comment?

I seem to remember some rather scathing comments. I wonder how many are quietly buying a few extra bits each week and smugly congratulating themselves on being prepared. Forgetting the scorn and contempt.

I think the word stockpiling means different things to different people. We live rurally and I have a reasonable amount of storage so always have plentiful supplies in.

But I have a child with type one diabetes so will make sure that I have a decent supply of insulin in - well as much as is sensible in terms of use by dates etc etc.

Dogsarebetterthancatsok · 01/09/2019 20:23

I’m still laughing and rolling my eyes

Myriade · 01/09/2019 20:25

Tbh, I think that 6 months or even 3 months as I have seen in some threads is way over the top. I expect disruptions as per the industry predictions. And an increase in prices.

Having more food than usual in the cupboard makes me feel a bit safer. But that’s it.
For the rest, I’m doing my normal buying stuff when they are in special offer and planning for price increases due to xx.

And I actually think all this ‘we need to stockpile to the nth degree’ and ‘you will regret it if your don’t’ or ‘don’t complain when it happens’ etc... doesn’t help the Remain cause at all.
It makes Remainers look unhinged and actually when things will not be apocalyptic (because let’s be honest 1- we dint want it to be and 2- this is the least likely option by definition) then Leavers will be able to say ‘I told you so. Project Fear. And you are clearly unreliable and don’t know what you are talking about’. Basically giving power to the Leave side which is the opposite of what you wasn’t to achieve if you are a Remainers....

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/09/2019 20:27

Weapons? Unless you are thinking of a tin of tomatoes catapulted out of an upstairs window with a pair of school tights like something out of Home Alone? Then no.

Evilmorty · 01/09/2019 20:27

My mates are still laughing at me but who will be laughing when I’m selling them toilet roll at a tenner a sheet 😂

WhoKnewBeefStew · 01/09/2019 20:31

I'm still laughing....

I don't get this whole stock piling. Ok some things might go awol for a short period of time, but no one will starve.... Hmm

ShirleyPhallus · 01/09/2019 20:34

I mentioned weapons. You wanna check out the serious preppers threads to see it being mentioned

berlinbabylon · 01/09/2019 20:39

We won’t starve no matter what happens I fail to see why this is a positive of Brexit. If we stay in the EU (or the SM/EEA) we retain exactly the same trading conditions as now. Nothing is worth economic ruin (well perhaps getting rid of Hitler was).

berlinbabylon · 01/09/2019 20:40

some things might go awol for a short period of time some things may go "awol" full stop. They will not longer be supplied to the UK because it will be too much hassle. Even Switzerland has far less choice in its supermarkets than we currently do.

Elodie2019 · 01/09/2019 20:41

If I'm scavenging food from bins at Christmas, I'll come back and tell you that you were right OP.

Alsohuman · 01/09/2019 20:44

Brexit has no positives at all but it’s not going to be Armageddon.

Troels · 01/09/2019 20:44

I didn't laugh at people stockpiling, I'm not joining in.
People did it for Y2K also. Then spent months trying to eat through loads of canned foods that weren't their favorite foods.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/09/2019 20:45

How is rationing not a big deal? Are you serious?

Yes, we've been through it, but it was a war, this is our own stupidity and self importance.

Troels · 01/09/2019 20:46

I'll be laughing at that, seeing theres an awful lot of other things you can use other than loo roll.

Troels · 01/09/2019 20:47

Sorry meant to say Evilmorty before my post

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/09/2019 20:49

It is a big deal. It's a really big deal. It's a fucking big deal when you have children, or have to queue for hours.

This makes me really angry. How can people be so, I don't know, If I said what I really think I'll be banned here forever.

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 20:57

@ShirleyPhallus , I'm an actual serious prepper and weapons are rarely discussed. Usually in a disparaging tone. So you are talking utter no nonsense.

bellinisurge · 01/09/2019 20:59

You got an extra no tbere. I just meant nonsense. That is shit stirring idiotic nonsense.

IceCreamConewithaflake · 01/09/2019 21:08

I have a small stockpile, mainly as my son has Coeliac Disease. It won't last more than a couple of weeks though as I have a large family.
I hadn't thought about milk though - I assumed we are self sufficient in milk in the UK. Have many people got long life milk? I can't say I fancy it.

pooboobsleeprepeat · 01/09/2019 21:11

Yes 🙋🏼‍♀️ It’s still a stupid idea.
Stockpiling is what causes issues!
Maybe I should start pumping breast milk to feed the village when the famine sets in.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/09/2019 21:15

Of course it's the stockpiling that causes issues, not the idiotic Brexit.

twolobsters · 01/09/2019 21:15

I voted remain but do find the stockpiling and panic spread on here absurd. My opinion on that has not changed in the slightest.

twolobsters · 01/09/2019 21:20

The leaked document suggested there will likely be some disruption to supermarket supplies in the event of an unplanned, no deal Brexit.

However there's a world of difference between that and the need to ration or stockpile. Shortages of specific things (there's currently an issue with cauliflower due to the weather) don't mean you'll go hungry.

We're so spoiled it's unreal. There's a climate emergency, we could all do with eating more local produce.

YobaOljazUwaque · 01/09/2019 21:20

I do wonder what the best before date on the things in your stockpile are?

The thing is there's unlikely to be much shortage of things that can readily be stockpiled for 6 months. The shortages will be for fresh goods with a shelf life of less than a week. You can't stockpile for that.

Tensixtysix · 01/09/2019 21:20

People who stockpile food have a fear of being hungry. So they must either have experienced hunger or more likely they are greedy people to the core and will do anything to make sure that they can stuff their gob!
I bet none of the 'hoarders' gave anything to the local food banks.
Millions are hungry right now.
Better pray that they don't find your stash...
