Brexit

Do any of the people who laughed and rolled their eyes at those of us stockpiling six months ago care to comment?

I seem to remember some rather scathing comments. I wonder how many are quietly buying a few extra bits each week and smugly congratulating themselves on being prepared. Forgetting the scorn and contempt.

I think it's something like this...

If you buy extra stuff because it's on offer and you're a thrifty person who is generally careful with money, no problem.

If you buy extra stuff because there might be bad weather coming and you've been snowed in before, no problem.

If you buy extra stuff because you're an old-fashioned organised sort who likes a well-stocked pantry and like menu-planning and batch-cooking, no problem.

If you buy extra stuff because you're concerned about supply chain disruption in the wake of a No Deal crash-out Brexit, YOUR NEGATIVE THINKING WILL MAKE A BREXIT FAIRY DIE!!!!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 02/09/2019 17:45

Happy to comment. Didn't stockpile then, not stockpiling now. But carry on being smug if it makes you feel better.

Ornery · 02/09/2019 17:46

I live in forrin. I’ve noticed an interesting trend in other middle aged englishers seeking extended rental accommodation locally for their parentals in the last few days. I haven’t asked anyone but it did make me wonder if there were plans for extended visits to wait until any upheaval was done and new arrangements were firmly in place. It actually made me wonder if I should be making sure mine knew it was an option. Might just be a coincidence but it makes sense for retirees who have family abroad. We just dropped dd back at university so have a room spare for a few months.

"AutumnCrow

My back passage is full of vodka"
Love it :o
Well today is yet another weird day. I feel like drinking, but I'm OK for vodka thanks.

Anyone who hasn't put something aside is an idiot IMO given all of the information now circulating.

We may well currently have products which we over produce but when other things can't get into the country, people switch products. So when the rice and pasta is held up or prices shoot up then more people switch to potatoes. Suddenly we don't have enough. Likewise those who eat lots of fresh tomatoes suddenly switch to carrots.

Plus we also have a weather related wheat shortage which is already beginning to impact.

What is the harm in having a couple of weeks of food and other essentials put by? Anyone who can afford to do so should forward purchase a couple of weeks' of food. Its the calm, logical, sensible and responsible thing to do.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 17:50

I don't think of a couple of weeks food as stockpiling. I buy most things monthly anyhow.

Is that all stockpiling is? Is that all preppers do? Buy a couple of BOGOF packs of loo roll?

CrunchyCarrot · 02/09/2019 17:51

So many dead fairies here! Shock

Honestly I really can't understand how some people can have such blind faith in the govt!

Thehagonthehill · 02/09/2019 17:57

I hope super markets drop their stupid policy on ugly fruit/veg for this once. The thought of us not having enough veg to go around when tons are being wasted because they are the wrong shape. This time of the year this will include carrots ,potatoes and parsnips.

StealthPolarBear · 02/09/2019 17:58

Has everyone stocked up on unicorn food?
Oh no, we make that in runcorn.

In a weird coincidence my DD just texted me about vodka. The apple didn't fall far there

TheElementsSong · 02/09/2019 18:02

Is that all stockpiling is?

No no, what Remoaning stockpilers do is flap wildly around the shops, then empty the shelves of 9842783 tins of pickled sea urchins, even though they don't actually eat pickled sea urchins. Thus they have panic-bought, and inflicted a cruel shortage of pickled sea urchins upon the nation. And then after 31 October, when the skies will rain down honey cakes upon BeLeavers, those foolish Remoaners will be left weeping bitter tears of regret in their fort of pickled sea urchin tins.

Mamamia456 · 02/09/2019 18:05

Bubblesbuddy - What's smug about buying British food, I thought every one did given the choice. Isn't that just common sense? Why buy a cucumber that's come all the way from Spain when you can buy a local one.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/09/2019 18:11

Dammit theelements ive told you before...stay out of my larder!

Tolleshunt · 02/09/2019 18:15

Honestly I really can't understand how some people can have such blind faith in the govt!

Especially this government!

I mean, what exactly have they achieved so competently that would make anybody think they could successfully pull off such an unprecedented, risky event, and actually materialise some benefits?

AutumnCrow · 02/09/2019 18:18

Boris Johnson just lied to the nation on live tv, which was nice.

IDontBelieveYou · 02/09/2019 18:19

Which bit, Autumn?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/09/2019 18:19

What did he say

I was watching but i just heard blah blah blah

Which was most off putting

Parker231 · 02/09/2019 18:37

Nothing new - he won’t change the exit date, believes we’ll get a deal and basically don’t vote against me tomorrow!

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 18:43

@Ligresa I'm an actual prepper so I do more. Rather than sneer and tell people they need to be like me, I have been suggesting they do what is right for them to get a buffer in. Rather than tell them they should live , I have given suggestions about incorporating some prepper ideas into how they live now. On the basis that it is better than nothing and allows people to think for themselves.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 18:43

I'm stockpiling. Normal stuff like making sure I've got plenty of the pet food, loo roll, plenty of pasta, jar sauces, soups, bread mixes for the breadmaker etc

I will definitely be stockpiling some booze ext week Gin Wine

Afaik, the government has TOLD us we'd be wise to do this? If the govt tells me to stockpile, I'm gonna do it. We had scrapping over the last loaf of bread in the supermarket after 2 days of snow....so I don't fancy what a no deal brexit may bring.

FrameyMcFrame · 02/09/2019 18:49

I stockpiled then it didn't happen.

Now I've eaten it all I really don't feel like starting again

The boy that cried wolf..

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 18:53

In the bit that cried wolf story, there was a wolf.

Blueshadow · 02/09/2019 18:58

We don’t have much space or money, but having a few bags of well chosen non-perishables seems very sensible at the moment, given that there will probably be shortages in the event of no deal. I don’t get why you wouldn’t, at this point.

HeronLanyon · 02/09/2019 18:58

framey me too - I ransacked March Brexit boxes I’m totally random disorganised manner. Had to get it all out and do newnlist. Interestingly my priorities have changed in 6 months. I didn’t have any alcohol before. Now going to stock up on vodka and other things. Seems more necessary every day.

zebrasdontwearbras · 02/09/2019 19:00

You stockpiled, then Brexit didn't happen. The risk is brexit itself - when it happens - particularly no deal. Which looks increasingly likely.

Unless you think brexit won't happen at all - and I'll happily join you in that lovely daydream... Wink

And yes, there was a wolf.
