Brexit

Do any of the people who laughed and rolled their eyes at those of us stockpiling six months ago care to comment?

I seem to remember some rather scathing comments. I wonder how many are quietly buying a few extra bits each week and smugly congratulating themselves on being prepared. Forgetting the scorn and contempt.

OP posts:

What exactly are people stockpiling though?

Sensible people will be stocking up on what they normally use, so that they can wind down their stocks again after Brexit or after the snow, or whatever other "risk" they may personally be preparing for.

I have nothing in my "stores" that I don't use weekly anyway.

As for medicines, I've been getting my prescriptions a few days earlier each month for the last year or so, so now have a couple of months' in stock - again, that will all be used up in due course and I'll start delaying my repeat requests over the coming months to get back to the usual monthly supply.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 16:00

You seem very invested in the superiority of stock piling bellini

I genuinely don't understand this comment to bellini.

Socksontheradiator · 02/09/2019 16:27

OP, six months ago I hadn't even considered stockpiling. A friend mentioned it in March , I googled it and found the Brexit cupboard threads.
Stockpiling made sense to me, and I appreciated the arguments for and against. I learnt more about brexit, more about supply and demand, the just in time chain and the difference between panic buying and stockpiling.
I am very grateful.
Ligresa, Bellinisurge is an experienced general prepper who gives calm, wise advice. I see her posts as being less about superiority, and more about encouraging other people to help themselves in order to avoid the very panic that stockpilers are often accused of.
Again, if there are shortages, people who are already prepared can stand back and allow others to have what will be available.
It just seems so logical to me!

BowiesJumper · 02/09/2019 16:30

Ah I see. I can understand sensory issues/ASD concerns of course, and as I said medicines. I can't understand outside of that really though. But maybe I'm being too optimistic!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/09/2019 16:31

Fucking hell

Are we still on the ‘we’ll survive’ shtick

As long as the bar is set that low I suppose...

People seem to be weirdly annoyed about what randoms on the internet do with their shopping...

Makes me actually want to do a bit of stockpiling Grin

burnttoastandjam · 02/09/2019 16:36

As I understand it, with regards to the origins of meat, there are differences in the terms 'born in', 'reared in' and 'slaughtered in'.

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 16:36

As far as getting a buffer of food etc in is concerned, I don't give much of a shit how you voted, I just want people to build some resilience into their home so that anyone who genuinely needs help, doesn't have to fight through people with avoidable dramas in order to get that help.
I've noticed that there seems to be a political element to a lot of people's refusal to get a buffer in. Like it's some sort of betrayal of what looks increasingly like a cult. And lots of snarkiness with that. I am concerned that there are people who voted Leave who haven't really thought about getting a buffer in and who think that they are somehow betraying the thing they believe in by doing so.
I can't help you with your personal drama about this but I am pig sick of the Cult leaders trying to exploit the conflict between a person's feelings about Brexit and their concerns about stability of food supply.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 16:42

I think you are hugely overthinking it.

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 16:44

And I think you are underthinking it. It's called freedom of expression and difference of opinion.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 16:46

Seeing not prepping as a political act i mean.

I bought a lot of my preferred brand of instant coffee when it was on special offer last week. I do that anyway though. I live rurally so have a lot of food in the freezers. It would be normal for us to have a week or two in hand.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 16:48

Also I am a good and resourceful cook, with kids and dh that will eat anything. So as I said before, I will manage with whatever I can buy or grow.

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 16:50

@Ligresa and what would you do if you lived in the city or the suburbs in a flat with no garden. Some people aren't you.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/09/2019 16:52

What I’m a little confused by is some posters having a pop at people stockpiling

And then taking the piss out of those who have a weeks worth of food

Pshaw...foolish people only having a week of food...i have a chest freezer full and could last for a month

Well thats stockpiling!

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 16:54

I think they are confused by the word "stockpiling " and think it can only mean being walled in your bedroom by tins of baked beans.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/09/2019 16:55

I think you are right bellini

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/09/2019 16:56

I don’t even have a chest freezer

Should i buy one...loads of non stockpiling people seem to have them, and full ones at that

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 16:58

Ligresa and what would you do if you lived in the city or the suburbs in a flat with no garden. Some people aren't you

I'm telling you what I do. I thought the very definition of a prepper is someone who is thinking only of their own situation? If you let people know what you've got they will want to take it off you?

AutumnCrow · 02/09/2019 16:58

There's a triple whammy for lone parent families - they're still recovering from the transfer to Universal Credit and the five week wait for money, as well as being hit by increased school uniform costs, plus now this potential impact of No Deal Brexit. Actually factor in this country's dismal record on collecting child support and it's a quadruple whammy.

I'm quite concerned about some schools' abilities to produce free school meals during disruption to supplies.

I think advice on useful cheap tinned food and staples to stock up on (or donate to foodbank) can only be helpful.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 16:58

I don't have a chest freezer either.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 17:00

I think advice on useful cheap tinned food and staples to stock up on (or donate to foodbank) can only be helpful

What cheap useful tinned food do you normally eat? Buy lots of that. There you go.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/09/2019 17:01

Buy lots of that. There you go

That’s exactly what people have been saying they’re doing!

AutumnCrow · 02/09/2019 17:03

You don't sound very happy, Ligresa. Perhaps a nice brisk walk would help, or something

bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 17:03

@Ligresa , I have been trying to advise people for over a year on here about how to think about it for their own situation. For themselves.Which is more useful than the "I'm alright, Jack" attitude you have. You attitude serves to putpeople off . People who need it more than you do. Maybe that's why you have been doing it.

Ligresa · 02/09/2019 17:03

Good. Excellent. Well done. You now have a shed full of baked beans.
