Johnson likes publicity.

Any attention is good attention. Whilst you are talking about how crazy his idea is, the less you come up with your own.

And there it is. The lack of plan to stop no deal. Just a bunch of idiots who argue over who is more right about politics without offering up a practical solution.

Unable to see their own flaws.

And leading us ever closer to the cliff edge and operation Yellowhammer.

Are you James Patrick?

Checks.

Nope. Definitely female.

Claig is not here. Claig's style is longer posts than me. Linking together a barely coherent argument together from Russia Today's website.

In response to the no deal immigration story

David Lammy @davidlammy
Let me get this straight. An NHS nurse who is an EU national and happens to be on holiday won’t be able to get back into the UK? Are you serious? What an absolute disgrace of a government. Boris Johnson should be ashamed of himself.

Its a very well thought out policy, especially since its half term week here and in many other parts of the country.

We are not going anywhere strangely enough. Been advised not to for no Brexit related reasons as it goes but I'm quite glad.

This is about EU citizens as bargaining chips again.

They don't give a fuck about traitorous Brits living abroad.

Emergency talks under way with Spain to prevent Brussels from strangling Gibraltar with No Deal Brexit border logjam

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 19/08/2019 07:59

It looks more like consequences of FOM ending everywhere, not deliberate targeted "strangulation" of Gibraltar

Looks like Gibraltar needs special terms - but while it's No Deal that's unlikely

If EU citizens no longer have FOM to the UK, then of course the EU will retaliate by preventing UK citizens from EU FOM (at least without already having a job offer etc)

Otherwise, no incentive for the UK to relax things for EU citizens

Passports must be stamped, or otherwise people could stay for much longer than 3 months

“The Commission has proposed that UK nationals can travel visa-free to the EU for short stays, if the UK also grants the same arrangement for citizens from all EU Member States.

Your passport will be stamped both when you enter the EU and when you leave it,
so that this period of 90 days, which is visa-free, can be calculated.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/08/2019 08:01

If Spain also wants special terms for Gib though, then I'm sure something will be arranged

  • the EU will continue to do things whch benefit EU members ... it's just that when it's British interests only, tough luck
RedToothBrush · 19/08/2019 08:02

Did anyone mention the Gina Miller stuff over the weekend?

Ive been out of phone reception or busy most of it.

James Grant @JAGrant
After requesting an undertaking from the PM not to advise the Queen to prorogue Parliament before Nov 1, @thatginamiller gets a reply: “the Prime Minister does not intend to provide any undertakings. The issue is entirely academic.” 1/3

The government’s lawyers say the issue is “academic” because “Parliament has, in the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation etc) Act 2019 (‘NIEFA’) expressly determined that it wishes to be able to sit in the period up to 31 October 2019.” 2/3

It’s still remarkable that Johnson refused to rule out, unequivocally, proroguing Parliament to force no-deal—instead relying on Parliament to stop him. It says a lot about what he thinks his support base wants, but also the limits of his populist approach to constitution. 3/3

That's interesting, Red. Bearing in mind BoZo looked like he'd ignore parliament, what's your assessment of this? That's he's going to use the 'Parliament stopped me' defence (if / when they do)?

RedToothBrush · 19/08/2019 08:06

Of course a VoNC intending to trigger a GE would dissolve parliament before 31st October - and so do the same thing as proroguing.

But its interesting to see how this has played out and I wonder when the advice was issued - it matters as if its post Johnson it shows he is finding out limitations the hard way.

Of course he could try and act illegally anyway too.

Tamara Cohen @tamcohen

Johnson in Berlin and Paris this week, but no10 expect "little discussion" of Brexit other than to reject the WA and insist MPs "will not and cannot" stop Brexit

Row over no deal leak escalates

Jeremy Corbyn today promises to do "everything necessary" to stop no deal

NEW I'm told that the Sunday Times no-deal dossier detailing food and medicine shortages and border chaos was dated 1 August - and presented at the first XO meeting.

BUT no10 insist that steps taken - decisions, funding etc mean that is not the situation now

It is expected that the Government will publish information about their assessment of the impact of no deal in the coming weeks.

No10 source tells me secret documents produced under last PM were too often "designed to frighten ministers rather than inform the public"

Corbyn v unlikely to be drawn today on alternative MP becoming caretaker PM if he fails.

Labour's preferred option is no confidence vote; he becomes caretaker PM and extends A50

OR he'll back Tory rebels seeking to control the order paper - Labour think likely to happen first

So in other words the leaked Yellowhammer documents, were 'a civil service scare tactic' and the result of the previous government not having put adequate plans in place.

But its OK now, as in the checks calendar last 18 days, sorry minus 6 for weekends last 12 working days, the new government has averted total disaster by throwing money at the problem and telling government departments that x number of civil servants will be deployed. And this means that the 'mess of the previous government' will be just fine and dandy because everyone will be up to speed, ready and plans shock tested and proofed for Checks calendar again 56 working days time.

Yes OK.

And I'm a fairy godmother.

so that this period of 90 days, which is visa-free, can be calculated.

I have a selfish practical question here: as an EU/UK national, I was planning to use my EU passport to get into the EU and my UK passport coming back. The stamp actually makes that tricky. Any suggestions on how to avoid lengthy questioning/queues at the border? I travel about 3-4 times a month for work. (Sorry I know this is a very minor issue in the grand scheme of things and I'm lucky to have both in the first place)

NoWordForFluffy · 19/08/2019 08:19

I'm sensing a shift in the tone of what's coming out of No 10 though. Whilst maintaining the hardline stance, there's also partial acknowledgment that he may not be able to ride roughshod over parliament. It's interesting.

@mistigri, is this the type of thing you've been envisaging, as I know you've been relatively sure that no deal won't happen?

Peregrina · 19/08/2019 08:19

What a pity that the Gibraltar Government didn't take the Opportunity to remind Boris Johnson that his territory voted 96% in favour of Remain. It must be especially galling to see their economy facing potential strangulation when they most emphatically did not want this shitshow.
I would imagine that with sufficient will, a fudge could have been worked for Gibraltar. However, sufficient will is totally lacking.

orangeshoebox · 19/08/2019 08:21

I have a selfish practical question here: as an EU/UK national, I was planning to use my EU passport to get into the EU and my UK passport coming back.

which is good international practice.
so you shouldn't get any stamps (I assume)

Mistigri · 19/08/2019 08:36

is this the type of thing you've been envisaging, as I know you've been relatively sure that no deal won't happen?

I think the weekend showed a government in a panic and with no internal discipline eg Priti Patel freelancing re FoM.

This is not a government that can be confident that it has what it takes to make a no deal Brexit manageable (even if there was any such thing as a manageable no-deal) . A no deal brexit would put unprecedented (at least outside wartime) pressure on government resources.

If you then assume, as I do, that Blowjob's primary objective is not Brexit but Blowjob remaining in power, then it is obvious that the government has to find some way out. There is a dual strategy right now IMO:

  • "leaks" re no deal to decrease support for no deal/increase outrage among remainers/increase pressure on the opposition to act effectively to prevent no deal
  • a simultaneously hard line propaganda war to keep potential Brexit party voters onside

Blowjob won't hold an election (unless he's forced to) until the Brexit party threat has been neutralised.

We don't know anything about how Patel's plans will work, if indeed they ever work (long timescale project from a woman whose tenure will be short).

My daughter does the opposite, EU ID card to enter the U.K., U.K. passport when leaving, so that it looks like a migrant has arrived but not left Grin. Obv won't be possible after Oct.

On that note DD's U.K. passport is due to expire, DS's is expired some time ago. I suppose I am going to have to renew them Sad

PMK, thanks.

They don't give a fuck about traitorous Brits living abroad.

Let's be a bit more accurate. The British political class right now, particularly that bunch in power, does not now and never has given a fuck about British people anywhere. They're too myopic for that. The only people they give a fuck for are people with big wallets, preferably white men in London from the right families.

Photogenic relaxed regal moggies.

Was at my dad's last night who is just back from SA. He said the South Africans are just bemused at what is happening in the UK and think that BlowJob is as bad as, if not worse than Zuma (currently being tried for corruption) was/is - which is a low bar to fail Hmm

Peregrina · 19/08/2019 08:59

Let's live in hope then that eventually BlowJob gets tried for corruption.

TheABC · 19/08/2019 09:04

Yes, the hasty denials and the way the Government has ramped up the rhetoric over the leaked documents is interesting. Usually, you would just get a Government spokesman doing a routine refutation.
