Westminstenders: Charge!!!!

RedToothBrush · 11/08/2019 16:15

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

Howabout as someone with a Geordie accent who grew up an a council estate I know a Northern accent doesn't equal working class. I do however think Lisa Nandy understands and tries to represent her Northern constituents.

tobee · 12/08/2019 15:06

Surely, if there's been a time in history, when government, steeped in tradition and archaic law as it is, with the adversarial party system we have, this is a moment to kick a lot of it over and seriously fight together to sort this out?

How many in the commons want a No Deal versus those who want to stop a No Deal (ie something else)?

And I don't mean a group of women as an emergency cabinet.

I just don't feel secure in thinking people will get together productively. And in time.

The government is ruthless and many are proven unfit for office.

Hazardtired · 12/08/2019 15:26

foldy I promise we're angry ❤.

LouiseCollins28 · 12/08/2019 15:31

Agree Tobee, folks in the HoC need to get this organised ASAP if they are going to be successful.

woodpigeons · 12/08/2019 16:15

Foldy I’m so sorry. It really puts my worries about med shortages into perspective.
I still find it difficult to believe all this is happening but can’t understand people not wanting to vote tactically.
I’m getting to the point where I would vote for the devil to avoid a hard Brexit.
Well maybe not but there couldn’t be anyone much worse than Cummings aka Boris.

Science and engineering hit worst as Euroboffins do a little Brexit of their own from British universities
12 Aug 2019 at 11:33

Newly analysed recruitment figures from British Russell Group universities show a slowing of recruitment of European academics and increasing departures.

The number of EU academics in all disciplines working in the UK is still growing, but much more slowly than it was. In 2017/2018 there was a 4 per cent increase, compared to 8 per cent in 2014/2015 and 12 per cent in 2013/2014. During the same period, growth in UK academics continued to increase.

There has been an increase in the numbers of EU academics leaving Russell Group universities – up 11 per cent between 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 from 3,865 to 4,280. This compares with UK and non-EU academics leaving their posts growing by 4 and 5 per cent in each period.

Chemistry, biosciences, physics and engineering are being hit disproportionately hard. EU academics make up 27 per cent of chemistry departments at Russell Group universities but 36 per cent of academics who left chemistry posts in 2016/2017.

The research was based on figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency by Dr Hollie Chandler, senior policy adviser at the Russell Group.

The policy group called on the government to enshrine the rights outlined in the Settlement Scheme for EU Nationals in UK law as quickly as possible.

Chandler drily noted: "Given the current gridlock in Westminster, this suggestion is offered more in hope than expectation. But with growing concern over the prospect of a no-deal Brexit in October, this issue is not going to go away. The longer EU academics have to wait for legal clarity over their immigration status and certainty over the UK's access to EU research programmes, the more likely it is problems in recruiting and retaining EU staff will intensify."

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said last week that he would consider removing or extending the cap on Tier 1 talent visas, but this was seen as unlikely to reverse other pressures such as continued uncertainty over access to European research funding.

The Russell Group of universities is a self-selected group of 24 of the UK's top research and teaching institutions including ICL, King's College London, LSE and the universities of Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Oxford among others. ®

Now I'm scratching my head as to what Alastairpeoplesvotecampbell's job was all that time when working at no10? Confused

howabout · 12/08/2019 16:37

According to The Guardian the BBC also take Alastair Campbell's lead when it comes to rapid rebuttal units.

Two stories which confirm our descent into hell ...

Poor sod killed by a really delightful mother and son - evil beyond belief

And police warn people not to be rude on social media about a wanted criminal as they risk prosecution

Somewhere I am sure, if we listen hard enough, there is a trumpet sounding.

TheABC · 12/08/2019 17:56

How much gin should you stockpile for Crash out November? I am estimating enough for the month, but I have no idea how angry I will be about the circumstances. Enough to sink a bathtub or enough for Molotov cocktails?!

bellinisurge · 12/08/2019 17:58

Gin we have plenty of but I am dehydrating loads of lime slices for the stash. Might as well conform to my stereotype despite living in Tommy Robinson country. Apparently Remainers are all metropolitan elite middle class wankers 😂😂😂😂😂😂

MockerstheFeManist · 12/08/2019 18:03

In other news, it turns outFarridge is a racist. Yes, who knew?

Says good old Prince Harry, everybody loved him when he dressed up like a Nazi, but now everybody hates him because his Missus has a touch of the tarbrush.

(Farridge says these comments were not for publication. So that's alright, then.)

AutumnCrow · 12/08/2019 18:26

Trump, Johnson, Farage. Vile. The racism of middle-aged, white, privileged men - is it infecting the bloody water supply or something?

Harry's just found out he has no immunity.

BeardedMum · 12/08/2019 18:27

I was wondering if there was a thread about Farage’s comments.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 12/08/2019 19:01

UIn other news, it turns outFarridge is a racist. Yes, who knew^

Surely not. I’m sure that 5-10 years ago saying something like this would be highly controversial. These days, meh, racism is allowed again.

foldy I’m so sorry. I’m angry. Angry at the government and angry that so many of the population clearly don’t give a shit if other people’s lives get worse.

Basilpots · 12/08/2019 19:10

Hmm just read what Farage said re Royal Family not surprised he didn’t want it repeating. Not shocked he said it.

Even more surprised he was introduced as possibly next Prime Minister of the UK !!

Grinchly · 12/08/2019 19:16

dgr I value and respect your viewpoint and intelligence borne from wide reading, plus your family's own experience on these threads. They would be the worse without you.

But I do think you need to take a step back and stop seeing everything through one dystopian lens,
Because that risks bringing about the very end you have been warning us about.

Yes, the door is closing. But we need feet in the door, not yet another shove to close it shut.

AutumnCrow · 12/08/2019 19:38

We need to fight to the end to try to protect people like foldy

woman19 · 12/08/2019 19:45

Amen autumncrow

LonelyTiredandLow · 12/08/2019 20:37

Dropping in again for a quick catch up!

Saw this in Guardian re' Farage's attack on the monarchy and thought it was on the money. FWIW the Leavers that I engaged on this 2 years ago (around the time the Queen wore her hat) and suggested that he might go "anti-royal" laughed it off saying, if anything he was more into the monarchy because "Brexit is about Patriotism" Hmm. I've made sure they are aware of the differences between patriotism and nationalism Grin. They also didn't believe that Farage wanted to make handguns legal and are apparently repulsed about anything American becoming more aligned with us. Again, this is all apparently about Patriotism...not copying ANYONE else.

They have gone increasingly quiet since the MMS seems to have realised how far up shit creek we are towards a No Deal that only 6 weeks ago one of them was prolifically posting he Wasn't Scared Of Hmm

On that note, I don't suppose our resident Leavers have come up with any benefits yet?

I'm further North now and saw a van today which had 'Fishing For Leave' on the side. I have never felt so alone travelling with dd solo as I do up here. I know not everyone here is a Leaver but I certainly seem to have that in my head when I'm chatting ('avoid Brexit at all costs' is running through my head), probably due to the van and the man on the bus, which has made it harder to relax. I think maybe I need to cross the boarder? It's tantalisingly close! .

I'm so sad that in 3 short years I don't feel I am in my own country with the same concerns any more. In future I can see this as a very good reason to go abroad for holidays.

Violetparis · 12/08/2019 20:56

The People's Vote march has been changed from the 12th October to the 19th. Lots of furious people on twitter who have already booked travel and hotels for the original date. Shambles!

tobee · 12/08/2019 21:02

I agree with AutumnCrow. But what do we do? Just feel clueless and hopeless!

And now Violet says about the date change for the March, that doesn't help!

Hoooo · 12/08/2019 21:12

Oh!
I could do 19th...

Hoooo · 12/08/2019 21:27

Those tweets about trump are terrifying.

He has FLD. When will they admit it?

Someone else has obv taken over writing his tweets...they are grammatically correct for a start.

Hoooo · 12/08/2019 21:50

I can't find the trump thread....
