Westminstenders: Charge!!!!

RedToothBrush · 11/08/2019 16:15

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

On the march:

@GuitarMoog
For the love of god, that’s AFTER the last European Council before Brexit. twitter.com/peoplesvote_uk/status/1160985067881193474

I've checked on the EU website and I think Steve is right. Sad
www.consilium.europa.eu/en/meetings/calendar/?filters=2031

Date change happened last time? Bit odd really. But then what isn't these days.

Happy Holidays lonely

BigChocFrenzy · 12/08/2019 22:39

I can understand changing it, as there is a clear risk of messing up the Great Ormond St Hospital event
However, I'd have expected the organisers to check for any clashing events before fixing the date, not afterwards

Focus group was interesting. 8 people from across England and Wales, age range mid 20s to late 70s. Half Tory, half Labour in 2017. 7 remain, 1 leaver in 2016 (the youngest person!). If voting tomorrow it'd be 4 LD, 1 each Tory, Labour, Green (the leaver Confused) and Brexit party (one of the Remainers Hmm)
Apart from the BXP voting Remainer who thinks Bozo is a breath of fresh air, we were all in violent agreement throughout. No deal is a disaster, Westminster is a clusterfuck, Corbyn is useless and Johnson is a self serving liability. Amazing that such a varied set of backgrounds and political loyalties all feel furious, impotent and disenfranchised.

Interesting that farage has taken aim at the RF.
I'd imagine a LOT of brexiters like them??

No, he has taken a cheap shot at the Duchess of Sussex. A lot of racists hate her. This is pure, shameless dog whistling.

borntobequiet · 13/08/2019 06:20

Farage is racist through and through. I remember him calling Barack Obama “disgusting”, his voice dripping with contempt and revulsion. It was then I realised just how vile he is.

Basilpots · 13/08/2019 06:31

Foldy That’s really interesting odd that they would only have one leaver in the group leave/remain is just as much a divide as left right,
Would imagine the the BXP voting remainer must give them a set of results they weren’t expecting.

A scientist's perspective on meeting Cummings and discussing science/mathematics funding: deevybee.blogspot.com/2019/08/a-day-out-at-10-downing-street.html?m=1. Not encouraging. Science is a team sport, and the bulk of its workforce is not going to be making £36k/year.

Basilpots · 13/08/2019 07:45

Interesting read Mship including the one in the comments.

“ I wonder if there are figures available which allow us to understand how much of what is paid to the EU comes back in science funding? I had wondered about this years ago, and there seemed to be no agreement as to what the figures were. This is relevant if one looks at "where the money is coming from" for future science funding.”

This is something I have often wondered about not just about science but all sorts of other funding which is hidden and not an obvious grant or refund. The Government need to be aware all this sort of financial support must also be replaced.

David Henig @davidheniguk
It is worth noting that the UK Government has still not said what it wants from a US trade deal (not good enough to just say 'free trade', especially when we have a lot of that already)

The unspoken reason a US trade deal is pushed so hard by so many in the Cabinet and around them is to push the UK away from EU regulations and towards US ones in areas like food. So this would be an anti-free-trade-with-EU deal. But that risks quite a lot of political controversy

Business, wary of the Atlanticist ideology, greater barriers to trade overall, and another controversial trade deal like TTIP, is not pushing for a comprehensive UK-US Free Trade Agreement, but rather for small deals easing some aspects of UK-US trade but not blocking UK-EU trade

Oddly therefore the idea of small UK-US sectoral deals is fine (they just can't tackle tariffs without breaking WTO rules), and let's get on with it. But the big story isn't this, it is whether the UK Government will actually move away from EU regulations in areas like food

Of course they will.

Hilary Benn @hilarybennmp
1. Amid all the argument, the Brexit Select Committee took evidence recently from representatives of the UK’s most important industries and services. We asked them what No Deal would mean to them, listened to what they had to say and concluded the following in our report:

2. “The Government’s own economic assessment shows that a “no deal” exit from the EU would be the most economically damaging outcome for the UK, with the effect most pronounced in the North East and the West Midlands....”

3. ...and the chemical, retail, food and drink and manufacturing sectors would be hardest hit.....The Government’s own analysis reinforces our previous conclusion that attempting a “managed no deal” cannot constitute the policy of any responsible Government.”

4. On services, “The Government has said that, if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, then UK businesses would be treated as third-country service providers by the EU. The UK would risk a loss of market access and an increase in non-tariff barriers.”

5. The Government’s own modelling found that “moving to WTO terms, and the consequences of non-tariff barriers being raised, would have the greatest impact on UK services compared to all the possible outcomes. “

6. “Leaving the EU without a deal would mean that the UK automotive sector would be subject to the EU’s Common External Tariff on its exports to the EU27, its largest market, adding costs estimated at around £2,700 for UK cars.”

7. “These costs would undermine the competitiveness of UK exported cars compared to cars manufactured and traded within the EU and cars manufactured in countries, including South Korea and Japan, with free trade agreements with the EU.”

8. ”It is clear that a no deal exit would result in the UK automotive sector—a great British success story—being put at a competitive disadvantage.”

9. As for farming “UK producers would face high tariffs exporting to the EU, currently the market for over two-thirds of UK agri-food exports.....Sheep meat would face a tariff approaching 50%, bringing the viability of that sector into question. “

10. “...we have no reason to doubt the concern that no deal would lead to some interruptions to food supplies in respect of certain products or to doubt the analysis of the NFU that no deal would be “disastrous” for UK farming. “

11. “The success of the UK’s chemical and pharmaceutical sectors rests on highly-integrated just-in-time supply chains. A disorderly no deal would disrupt these supply chains overnight, and.....

12. “....according to the Government’s own figures, would reduce GVA for the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors by over 20% over 15 years, compared to what it would have been had the UK not left the EU”

13. “Some have argued that a no deal exit would bring the EU “back to the table” and that the UK would secure a better deal as a result. This is, at best, a gamble....”

14. “....At worst, it could lead to severe disruption of the economy, pose a fundamental risk to the competitiveness of key sectors of the UK economy, and put many jobs and livelihoods at risk. “

15. Given this, and since ministers know how damaging No Deal will be and that there is no mandate for it, it is utterly irresponsible for the Government to be rushing headlong towards it. Read the Select Committee’s full report here.

Need to see the data tables but watching Press Preview on Sky last night, they said that the question was whether you agreed that, "Parliament will need to be prorogued in order for No Deal to go through" Confused

If that was indeed the question, then even I would agree! Shock

....of course, if the question had been should Parliament be prorogued in order to ensure No Deal, then it would get a different answer Hmm

Remember it's the Telegraph who commissioned the survey and who will have chosen the questions Hmm

They are trying to adjust the public's perception of what is "the People's Will" and what is acceptable. As Stig vociferously pointed out last night, it doesn't matter how many times the Brexiters claim that Leaving is the Will of the People Hmm - it is not the Will of 100% of the people of the country, so is NOT all The People Angry Not even half the people Sad

Important - @Telegraph reporting taking the piss by ignoring “don’t knows” to present an apparent majority - one for @FullFact @RoyalStatSoc @TweetMRS

Laurence Janta-Lipinski @jantalipinski
Not sure how much you can blame the paper when it’s from a ComRes press release either written by someone who doesn’t understand how number work or someone who does but wilfully misleads.

Will be meeting @AmbJohnBolton today to follow up on our talks in Washington DC last week. His comments show the US government is fully committed to negotiating a free trade agreement as soon as possible
