Westminstenders: Charge!!!!

RedToothBrush · 11/08/2019 16:15

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

I'm now pinning my only hope on Scottish independence. Which I expect to be a shitfest. I'm trying to do a shitfest comparison.

Meanwhile, the hostile environment is making sure foreigners die, as intended.

@flouncyfanny

You didn't eat at Wetherspoons then?

Not if you paid me. I recycled that pic from one of my feeds Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 18/08/2019 14:59

Yes. Boris isn't going to Merkel and Macron because he's scared, he's going because he wants to be able to say he tried his best and they said no, causing No Deal.

But he doesn't need to do that. He's already set his stall out and said they need to drop the backstop and he'll talk if they come to him. This is totally unnecessary if there isn't something else in it. Which I believe there is.

Ultimately, BoZo's career is harmed either way as he's damned whatever happens, if a GE can't be timed right post-Brexit (which it can't, I don't think).

ListeningQuietly · 18/08/2019 16:30

He calls his existing haulier or forwarder (who will undoubtedly have experience delivering to countries which require customs clearance),

This is where my confusion starts
the whole freight industry works on specialisms
the chaps who are experts at the Spain / Portugal / France / Italy runs
are not the same people as the Germany / Poland / Austria / Denmark run
and are different from the Irish run
and are different again from the Greece / Balkans run
let alone the companies who are expert at the non EU runs

I suspect lots of UK haulier staff could not tell you the difference between the various customs forms - as they have never filled one out.
Sad

Sky News breaking:-

Michael Gove says No Deal Brexit will cause "bumps in the road" but concerns are exaggerated.

Phew! That's ok then. 👌

Hmm
Eyewhisker · 18/08/2019 16:42

One of the issues at the border, is that even if everyone has the right paperwork, the need for even small additional checks can lead to big queues. If all vehicles currently have a 20 second check, then small changes which mean checks are just 40 seconds, halve the amount of trucks the port can process in an hour. It does not take much for long queues to build up, unless there’s been a dramatic increase in customs officials/customs posts.

AuldAlliance · 18/08/2019 16:57

WRT checks at ferry ports, here is a link to a simulation carried out in March on the effects of No-Deal Brexit on traffic at Dover. Not only does paperwork need checking - non-EU lorries are subject to customs and agri-food checks. It's not just a question of filling in forms and being waved through with a cheery smile. I know someone might point out that the simulation was done in March, but the available space for lorries has not been created since then, mainly because there is nowhere to put them.

Some extracts:

Currently, a small percentage, around 1%, of freight vehicle traffic entering and leaving the port of Dover is non-EU and subject to full customs checks. The Port of Dover says EU lorries are currently processed in around two minutes, whereas it takes 20 minutes or more to clear non-EU vehicles. In a no-deal Brexit, all freight traffic would be subject to longer checks and as a result, delays are likely to happen.

When we ran the simulation over a period of three weeks from March 29, it showed that under current check-in conditions with three check-in desks and taking two minutes per freight vehicle, the backup of the queue was minimal. It reached a manageable maximum queue of 1071 vehicles.

However, when we increased the check-in time to four minutes, the maximum freight vehicles in the queue drastically jumped to 52,396. By further increasing the check-in time to 20 minutes, the queue reached a huge 70,594 vehicles. This would far exceed the maximum number of freight vehicles that can be queued at any given time, leading to huge disruption at the port and on the surrounding roads.

Michael Gove says No Deal Brexit will cause "bumps in the road" but concerns are exaggerated.

I wondered if they deliberately allowed the worst case scenario to be 'leaked', so that when it isn't as bad as that, they will be able to scream Project Fear. I am 100% sure that some of our regular Leaver posters will do so.

tobee · 18/08/2019 17:40

I would not be at all surprised Peregrina.

BeardedMum · 18/08/2019 17:42

The Daily Hell is saying project fear leaked the report.

DGRossetti · 18/08/2019 17:48

The Daily Hell is saying project fear leaked the report.

As if mattered. Brexiteers will believe what they want to believe without needing any facts. I suspect that tack is intended more for overseas consumption, where the descent of Britain into madness and fascism is less accepted.

It's like when Fox News runs stories defending Trump. It's not the locals they are addressing ....

prettybird · 18/08/2019 18:01

I've been "talking" on Facebook to TiP about some of the recent posts on this thread, as I remembered that she used to work at Dover (she can still lurk Wink).

She is wondering if those who think it will be fine (Hmm) have ever filled out a "C88" and whether they know the rules for a "C5" and how well they understand "turnout and tally" or "demurrage" ConfusedHmm

I can remember her on previous Westministender threads talking about the paperwork that was involved before the Single Market - which will inevitably result in delays while it is checked Sad Quite apart from the fact that she - and her fellow, experienced colleagues - are long gone and a whole new cohort will need to be both recruited and trained. Shock

Hazardtired · 18/08/2019 18:13

Ahh I was wondering who used to do that job at Dover I knew someone from westminsters did!

Myriade · 18/08/2019 18:26

@Mistigri wo a doubt, I would organise a holiday in Europe for a good month (with possibility to extend fir a couple more months).
I believe that enough that I’m thinking about organising exactly that for me and the dcs (albeit a shorter trip) to go and visit my parents in Europe during the school hols (and extend it by a few weeks/months).
My threshold for doing it will be different than yours but I certainly have in my ‘just in case’ Plan a quickly organised trip back to see family v

Myriade · 18/08/2019 18:28

FWIW I’m not listening toBJ. He is as unreliable as Trump. I will only believe what he DOES rather than what he says

FishesaPlenty · 18/08/2019 18:39

Not only does paperwork need checking - non-EU lorries are subject to customs and agri-food checks. It's not just a question of filling in forms and being waved through with a cheery smile.

No. For outbound traffic (which is what will cause any problems on the roads of Kent) it's exactly a question of filling in forms (or at least having a computer screen checked) and being waved through with a cheery smile (or more likely a surly glance).

Any queues for inbound freight (caused by checks at Dover) would be within the port and in France.

RedToothBrush · 18/08/2019 18:43

James Patrick @j_ames
Just FYI, the government’s contingency plans won’t survive contact with No Deal in reality.

The failure points will be multiple and will break one by one. A domino chain starting to fall from the first day.

Yellowhammer is, in truth, a best case scenario.

Calvin @CalvinKerpenko
And for those reading... in 2011 it took nearly a week to quell rioting.

We have lost a sixth of our police officers due to cuts since then.

Jason118 · 18/08/2019 18:45

And if the forms are not filled in, or incorrect? How many errors will it take to completely stuff the previously frictionless journey?

DGRossetti · 18/08/2019 18:50

And for those reading... in 2011 it took nearly a week to quell rioting.

Where I worked, several staff didn't come in for fear of rioting (or for fear of leaving their families). We were a UK wide business, and I was working on DR/BCP plans for the IT infrastructure. As my boss said "at least we know what the threshold is below which we can't operate".

In most businesses that are running lean, it's a very low number. And if you don't know that number, your problems are bigger than you think.

A lot of businesses like to boast how efficient they are, without realising they are also advertising how exposed they are to "events".

Yellowhammer is, in truth, a best case scenario

We did say.........

HateIsNotGood · 18/08/2019 19:02

Aren't there plans to divert some of the Dover sea-freight to other ports to relieve the pressure there?

I don't think BJ is 'playing power politics' for his EU visit (apparently there's a crew of civil servants that have already gone to start 'discussions' with their counterparts).

I think that minds have become more 'focused' and the reality that BJ will really take the UK out without a 'deal' has sunk in nearly everywhere.

The best case scenario would be tinkering with the WA so that the 'infinitum' backstop clauses are replaced by time-limited ones. This would be enough to get WA through HoC I think and so we could have an orderly, transitioned Brexit.

woman19 · 18/08/2019 19:03

Reality TV idea for the brexit. Titles being discussed:
'Starvation Island' 'Prison Island'?
