Brexit

“Project Fear” ... I’m dumbfound at the ignorance.

I am continually astounded by this government and the Brexiteers who are continually rubbishing claims and predictions by Industry leaders, experts, scientists, doctors and economists and claiming that it is part of the huge conspiracy; “project fear” should it not fit with their prosperous Eden that is post brexit Britain.

For example, Mark Carney said that the economy almost certainly would suffer as a result of no deal. But no no, he knows nothing. It’s project fear.

Dusty old Thatcherite tories (“Lord” Lamont) for example, on Newsnight last night said that Food supplies & medication would not be interrupted, despite industry leaders and experts saying it will. The Governments very own dry run of bringing the isotopes required for medical purposes such as xrays, scans, radio therapy etc. actually demonstrated that there would be delays, but again, these people are spouting lies & it’s just “project fear”. But of course, Lamont - who is arguably theee worst chancellor in British history - the man responsible for a run on the pound, is better placed to comment on this than the experts.

Another dusty old man of Tory grandeur Peter Lilley on PM tonight again dismissing claims by experts. It’s astounding.

Anyone who dares to call Brexit for what it is and gives their otherwise trusted opinion is a “remoaner” and their findings are just part of the so called project fear.

It seems that this faction want to blame anyone but themselves for this mess. It’s project fear. It’s the EU’s fault. They won’t negotiate. Our hands are clean. Hmm ... what extraordinary times we live in.

I like to think that a lot of the"project fear" responses are down to years and years of government parties all lying to get votes, proven time and time again that they are self serving and thay only them and their mates are only ever the ones to see their lives improve. The general public are shafted time and time again....this I would imagine is why leavers don't give a monkeys about expert opinions. As far as they see, they are on the politics payroll.

These are some reasons I've heard of anyway.

PortLouis1996 · 08/08/2019 11:48

@Elements

I think AKKAKK post was making the point about resilience of the UK as has been shown by surviving events such as wars.

Take Germany and Japan. Both flourished after WW2. Japan experienced a bad Tsunami, but they got over it.

fortheloveofPete · 08/08/2019 11:48

Please excuse the typos, I can't see properly at the moment

PortLouis1996 · 08/08/2019 11:49

He's not loyal to Britain, and just says whatever he needs to to keep the paycheques rolling in

Well said Janista

LatteLove · 08/08/2019 11:49

Lolz not this shit again! Because surviving those things is so similar to deliberately voting to impose hardship on yourself and the rest of us!

Far cry from the eleventy billion spare pounds we’d all be rolling around in we’re vote leave to be believed.

LatteLove · 08/08/2019 11:50

*were

PortLouis1996 · 08/08/2019 11:51

For clarity, although I know it won’t happen this way - if you voted leave I hope you suffer, if you voted remain I hope you don’t

Horrible. Don't apply for a Volunteer Job at the Samaritans whatever you do.

So anyone who has different opinion to yourself should suffer? Wow

Oh look, the reasonable mask has slipped.

LatteLove · 08/08/2019 11:53

Oh don’t worry @PortLouis1996 I won’t be!

So anyone who has different opinion to yourself should suffer? Wow

Not just having a different opinion, but actively voting in such a way that will fuck over me and my family. Fuck them and the horses they rode in on. They only cared about themselves when they voted, why should I care now?

PortLouis1996 · 08/08/2019 11:54

Truest statement yet

So there are 17.4 million morons who are also millionaires in the UK? That is about 25% of the population.

bellinisurge · 08/08/2019 11:55

@Janista lives in Australia and doesn't have anything other than a shit stirring interest in this. Like playing a board game.

Notonthestairs · 08/08/2019 11:55

So Mark Carney's successor should be born and bred in the UK? Does that include a Scot or somebody from Northern Ireland (ie from Remain voting areas?). Or does it solely come down to how they voted in 2016?

Nancy Pelosi was born and bred in Baltimore and she has been involved in politics since 1976 - longer if you take in to account her family background and internships. Her background reflects many in the US.

Maybe Boris Johnson's views should be dismissed because was born outside of the Uk? (Failing the born and bred test from the off)

If Mark Carney truly wanted to keep pocketing the pay cheques wouldn't he have shifted the BoE's reports to reflect the Governments position?

For those suggesting a period of struggle will be worth it (eventually) - I just assume you are financially protected from the impact.

I had my first conversation recently with a brexiteer who could actually explain her reasons for voting leave without saying ‘project fear’ I respect her so much more for it, still don’t agree that Brexit is best but respect her non the less for explaining in detail.

Her reasons were around the laws and leaders not being voted in by UK people. That when we joined the EU it was a trade agreement with a few countries, and then lots of poorer countries joined and it’s now a bit alliance with everyone having equal voices, even though in her head the UK for example has different priorities and needs than say, Lithuania.

She did actually admit it was going to be shit for a few years but after that, genuinely believes things will get better than they are now and that if we don’t enact change now, we will be prolonging things getting worse and worse and the vulrenable will be even more vulrenable when we reach the point that dramatic change needs to happen.

I very much see her point as to why she voted leave, I don’t agree we should do something that will make life shit for a bit. I’m very much remain but I think either way Brexit is going to happen and we need to stop resisting it and get things done.

My friends business is collapsing because of the uncertainty more than Brexit itself and being in limbo any longer than we need is going to send the country further down the pan!

TheElementsSong · 08/08/2019 12:01

To be fair, is anybody surprised that some Leavers are keen proponents of the blood-and-soil philosophy of True Patriot Citizenship?

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 08/08/2019 12:07

the issue is that there are those who magnify this and claim doom and gloom - that we will never get out of it

Rees Mogg has said it might take 50 years to feel the benefits of Brexit. That means, by JRM’s reckoning, many of us we will never get out of it - and anyone turning 18 now will be pushing 70 by the time the benefits are felt.

this is a country which has survived several world wars / plagues / fire destroying the capital / civil war / many other wars

  1. You do know a lot of people did not survive the wars?
  2. Many who did survive the wars suffered terrible hardship - the spivs did well for themselves of course - as will the multi-millionaire disaster capitalists manipulating this situation.
  3. Nobody had much of a choice but to get on with it during the war - who chooses to inflict harm unnecessarily on themselves and their fellow citizens?

for anyone to consider Brexit in that light, well perhaps they are demeaning those who fought in those wars etc?

Did you see all those World War II veterans at the D-Day service saying what a bad idea Brexit is?

I’m sure Brexit won’t be as bad as the war but don’t you think ‘not as bad as the war’ is setting the bar a bit low?

the reality is simple - yes, our peaceful, easy, luxury lifestyles might be slightly bumpy over the next year / 5 years / even 10 years - we really will cope and we will still be way better off than most people in this world..

The reality is not everyone on this country has an ‘easy, luxury lifestyle’. If you admit your luxury lifestyle might be ‘bumpy’ for the next decade what do you think is going to happen to people living in poverty?

Mamamia456 · 08/08/2019 12:30

SingingBabushkaBadly - The important word to remember of what Rees Mogg said is "might" so that means it might be 50 years or it might be 1 year or 2, so not worth worrying about. Lots of things in life might happen.

Motherof3Dragons · 08/08/2019 12:32

@ Janista
„Mark Carney is an internationalist "citizen of nowhere". He's not loyal to Britain... “

That‘s quite funny coming from someone who lives in Australia! You are hilarious 😆 And some people still take you seriously?

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 08/08/2019 12:33

not sure why you’re @-ing me when all I did the the “communities” thing was quote someone else. Ask them.

Sorry @LatteLove but You quoted them saying they hoped those communities would be hardest hit and said ‘Me too’.

Thank you for clarifying your feelings in a subsequent post. I agree we are indeed all fucked. When Leavers say ‘you lost, get over it’ I always think, actually, remain or leave, we all lost, it’s just only some of us know it yet.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 08/08/2019 12:38

The important word to remember of what Rees Mogg said is "might" so that means it might be 50 years or it might be 1 year or 2, so not worth worrying about. Lots of things in life might happen.

Why would Rees Mogg, with his vested interest in wanting support for Brexit try to over-egg how long it would take? No way would he have said that if he thought there was a chance it might be one, two or even ten years. Yes, it ‘might’ not be 50 years. It ‘might’ be 100 years. It ‘might’ be never.

I doubt JRM of all people is over estimating the likely ill effects of Brexit.

ghostofharrenhal · 08/08/2019 12:47

No it won't Janista, as said many times no-one voted for No Deal. What's the weather like this evening in Oz?

BrokenLogs · 08/08/2019 12:55

@bellinisurge my bet is Janista is British, has lived in Aus for 20+ years, slags off Aus because, well, it's not the UK, dreams of retiring back in 'Blighty' but isn't brave enough to actually ever make the move back and instead bores the tits of other expats (as no Aussie can be bothered with their miserable fucking face by this time) going on about Brexit.

Am I right @Janista? 🤷
