Westministenders: Brexit Preppers Are Traitors Who Don't Believe Enough

Believe in Brexit. Brexit will be great. If only you believe.

So this is why the pound has tanked.
This is why the Treasury has opened the piggie bank for prep. This has sparked something of a backlash amongst moderates and remain MPs.
This will go towards managing that Channel Tunnel Congestion in Kent we weren't going to have.
And to stockpiling drugs which again was just hysteria.
This is why Gove, an MP who actually does have an eye for detail, has been drafted into the Cabinet Office.
This is why after his stint at DEFRA he is planning to buy tonnes of meat at a fixed price to keep farms in business.

Johnson has been to NI. But it wasn't a publicity stunt apparently. This is a man who posed for a photo when he resigned from the Foreign Office.

He was met with protests.

He also has a phonecall with the Leo Varadkar which was 'warm', before its been said by the DUP that Dublin must be a willing partner in a Brexit Deal.

Johnson is also still sticking to the line that technology can solve the border issue. Technology which will not be available until 2030 at the earliest by the government's own admission.

Johnson has refused to meet any European leaders until they drop the backstop (I note there are no EU meetings planned until mid October just a couple of weeks before the 31st anyway, so this kind of suits him and makes him look tough when really its been timetabled that way for a while. The EU themselves say that the 'next possible contact' with Johnson isn't until the G7 at the end of August anyway too).

However his 'Brexit Sherpa' David Frost - Olly Robbins successor HAS been meeting with EU officials still...

Dr Phillip Lee has confirmed today that he is actively considering his future as a Tory and defecting to the LDs. The rumour has been going for a while, and he is in the process of being deselected by his local party. To openly say it, is quite something though.

We also have the Brecon By Election today, which if the LD win as expected, would reduce the government's majority to just 1.

It is possible that Johnson will be leading a minority government very soon, if the cards fall the right way.

The speculation is rife that Johnson actively wants to force a GE. This hasn't been helped by Dominic Cummings has ordered the preparation of a Budget in the week starting Oct 7. Which would need to be voted for through parliament.

Votes on budget and other important issues are where not having a majority become crucial.

If a budget vote got stuck and provoked a GE it would perhaps land whilst Brexit Party Supporters had returned to the Tory party but perhaps before all the shit has start to hit the fan and people get really fed up.

And even if we do have no deal, when we DO have a deal, we will have to put a bill through parliament to implement it. Whilst everyone has focused on the backstop, no one has thought about this... which is pretty important.

It is remarkable that a No Deal Supporting Government are now seemingly planning for Project Fear.

And we were the crazy ones?

Not watching tv - wondered the numbers?

Oakenbeach · 02/08/2019 02:31

Had a dream that I was watching announcement of LD win... woke up and thought I’d check, and lol and behold a LD win. Not a landslide but good enough. Given the swing needed and the BJ bounce they’ll be very pleased with it.

Jane Dodds - Lib Dem - 13,826 (43.4%)
Chris Davies - Con - 12,401 (39%)
Des Parkinson - Brexit - 3,331 (10.5%)
Tom Davies - Labour - 1,680 (5.3%)
Lady Lily The Pink - Loony - 334 (1%)
Liz Phillips - UKIP - 242 (0.8%)
-----
Lib Dem Majority - 1,42

wheresmymojo · 02/08/2019 02:41

What is amusing is that it's plausible that it could have been a CON hold if the BXP weren't standing.

So the BXP have contributed to BoJo's majority reducing to one(!) and making Brexit a bit harder Grin

wheresmymojo · 02/08/2019 02:42

...and the Monster Raving Looney Party beat UKIP!

BigSexyCrimeUnit · 02/08/2019 02:45

So utterly chuffed on so many levels with this result.

It is thankfully good news.
Hoping Farage's ego will get in way of merging with BJ and vice versa.
Hoping for more remain pacts.

DarkAtEndOfTunnel · 02/08/2019 04:38

I cannot cheer on a Lib Dem win given what they think of women. It's interesting that the Monster Raving Loony Party is beating others now: that's the only party that stands a chance of getting my vote in the near future.

Ellie56 · 02/08/2019 05:39

Yay! Lib dems have won Brecon and Radnorshire. Up yours BJ.

@DarkAtEndOfTunnel , good news about the Loony Party (the official one Grin). I totally get your point. I'm not four square behind the Lib Dems but, to paraphrase a previous poster, my hair is on fire and I have to choose the party most likely to put it out. The Lib Dems will have to address their bollocks woke nonsense - as will The Greens- and soon. But, for now, if they are the only party that can stop No Deal, then they get my vote.
I also recognise that we can't just Revoke and pretend this nightmare never happened. There are serious social, economic and constitutional problems that need to be tackled and, if it comes to it, I will look to see which party is best placed to tackle that.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/08/2019 06:56

Great result for the LDs. They were reporting the 'Boris Bounce' during the day's campaigning, so must be relieved.

Wheresmychickens, I (re)joined the LDs recently. I'm certainly not a fan of their trans stance, but they're my best fit generally. I've not the time to get as involved as they'd like though.

I've also started on my Christmas presents (I've almost finished!). I do start early normally, but I've gone for it this year! I'm starting on my baking ingredients now too, which is early for me.

I'll create a butter mountain next month (and Vitalite as the kids are still not at the top of the milk ladder!).

BigChocFrenzy · 02/08/2019 07:13

A good win for the LDems, despite BJ's honeymoon bounce

  • hopefully this is the start of reversing the bounce

@red I don't if I'm being overly suspicious ...
but I wonder if BJ left Davies as the candidate so that he had a fallguy to blame if the seat was lost ?

As we've been discussing, far more Labour Remainers went to LDems than Lexiters went to Farage

Corbyn's Lexiter policy continues to cripple the party in elections

and reports for many months now have confirmed that he is toxic on many doorsteps where voters would otherwise be Labour.

SmallAlbatross · 02/08/2019 07:14

As a remainer I find the Brecon and Radnorshire result quite depressing. Even if you count Labour as a Remain party there were more votes for Leave parties than Remain.

Excluding the MRL votes I make it 50.74% Leave to 49.26% Remain, compared with 51.86/48.14 in the referendum.

Still - one less Tory.

TheElementsSong · 02/08/2019 07:23

I'm certainly not a fan of their trans stance, but they're my best fit generally.

I observed on the previous thread that unlike the Remainers who post on Westministenders, many Leavers who post don't seem to suffer from the same concerns about the impeccability of whom they support or from any consistency of their claimed position. Time and again, I've seen some Leavers say that they voted Leave to improve environmental standards, or workers' rights, or increase immigration from the rest of the world at the expense of the mostly-white EU population. Then the same posters eagerly vote BXP.

On these MN threads, I've seen Remainers discussing robustly, or even arguing, about various issues with each other, calling others out for things they disagree with. Whereas I've found it painfully amusing that on the same thread you can see one Leaver claiming that they have no problem with immigration levels and want more ethnic minority immigration because "the EU is racist" and another Leaver saying that they voted because there are too many foreigners diluting British culture and - and I don't think I've ever seen them take issue with each other, instead operating convenient selective blindness. (Also seen similar with regard to apparently fervent environmental green standards, cheek by jowl with others demanding incandescent lightbulbs and that stuff about toasters/hoovers) (And people who claim they knowingly voted for job losses/economic hardship alongside people who insist that there have been no such effects from Brexit, or how we're simultaneously the most glorious powerful nation who will sweep all before her but also the helpless crushed victim of cruel oppressors ... sometimes it's the same poster who says both things at different times Hmm).

Iambuffy · 02/08/2019 07:23

So...
If dr lee actually makes a decision at some point tl join the lib dems, BJs majority is gone??
Does that automatically tigger a GE?

NoWordForFluffy · 02/08/2019 07:28

@TheElementsSong, it's the lack of critical thinking being displayed (almost proudly!) by some Leavers which astounds me. I don't understand how anybody can maintain a no deal stance when all evidence flies in the face of the rubbish / sound bites they keep posting.

No, sadly, buffy. But it does mean that Corbyn should be thinking carefully about a VoNC and discussing tactics on a multi-party level. Not sure he will though.

RedToothBrush · 02/08/2019 07:31

Does that automatically tigger a GE?

No.

It just makes life more complicated and a GE more likely.

But its not a given.
