Why do people here have a stash for Brexit?

I can see the point if it's medicines or medical supplies, but I've seen a few threads here where people are stashing tuna, toilet rolls and sweets!?

Are you all fucking mad?

I'm a total remainder but come on, I know it'll be shit but you'll still find asda and tesco will be open

We are doing it now and over the last few months so we won't be the problem come October/November. We can start preparing for Christmas while you Brexiteers are fighting over the last tomato.

everythingisginandroses · 30/07/2019 23:02

Pasta really does all come from Italy. Non-EU goods really do come here via EU trade agreements. Just saying.

ElPontifico · 30/07/2019 23:23

Anyone who thinks that "But British. Simple," is a viable response is, indeed, a bit... simple.

But hey, feel free to pursue that as a policy. I figure that's just Darwin in action Grin

JackChaffinch · 31/07/2019 00:02

Personal responsibility. I made it my business to learn about the issues involved. It's been three years, there have been countless explainer pieces in all the national press and on the news. Expecting everything to carry on as normal is just wilful ignorance at this point.

lovelyupnorth · 31/07/2019 06:11

Having lived on the Isle of Man and seen what the shops are like after two or three days of no ferries due to bad weather. I think it’s reasonable to keep a small stash.

You only need to look at how Brits shop or the run on Northern Rock or the fuel crisis to see how shit we are in a panic.

Also given that the 31st of October deadline fails when it does the Supermarkets don’t have the capacity to stock the extra they did in March due to Christmas.

AutumnCrow · 31/07/2019 08:00

Yeah but we'll all be fine for glittery costumes and chocolate advent calendars.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 31/07/2019 10:27

And platters of tiny party food.

PancakeAndKeith · 31/07/2019 10:39

And prawn rings. Don’t forget the prawn rings.

Spudlet · 31/07/2019 14:37

And booze! So half the country will be mellow and the other half will be fighty drunk, which should help with the looting. Personally I’m a mellow drunk - yet another reason to stockpile. I just don’t have it in me to bottle someone over the last tin of beans.

Don’t know what the maudlin drunks are going to do, they’ll be buggered.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2019 14:42

Oh we have booze @Spudlet . Dh has just discovered gin and tonic. Which he has added to our stash of wine and Prosecco Grin. I've even convinced him of the virtue of dehydrating limes - we have been dipping into our stash of dehydrated lemon slices. But you need lime for gin.

When you read some of the comments here, it makes me think that some posters are not looking at the news, reading newspapers or the Gov.uk information- after such a long lead up to Brexit how can they not be aware of import issues and how the JIT supply chain works.

ThirdThoughts · 31/07/2019 15:28

My son loves those "Inside the Factory" programmes, they are a real eye opener into how JIT manufacturing operates - where ingredients come from, how quickly they are processed and how little time those goods are stored before heading to shops.

SistemaAddict · 31/07/2019 15:39

We watched the Mr Kipling Bakewell Tarts one last night. I'm fascinated by the machines. I think it was 4 hours from the ingredients arriving to the finished product leaving the factory.

twitterbird · 31/07/2019 15:44

I think it is madness and have not come across a single person in real life doing it

AwdBovril · 31/07/2019 15:48

Ooh, I never thought of dehydrated limes! Yum!

Timeandtimeagain42 · 31/07/2019 15:48

I think it is madness and have not come across a single person in real life doing it

Care to explain what's 'mad' about it specifically? You'll obviously have read all the posts about disrupted supply chains causing shortages..... do you disagree with that or feel that all "sane" people will be fine to go without most food stuffs whilst trade agreements are negotiated? I'm intrigued to hear the logic behind your answer. Grin

TheElementsSong · 31/07/2019 15:50

I think it is madness and have not come across a single person in real life doing it

(1) Fascinating and deep observation, much appreciated.

(2) Nobody with even a smidge of brain function, who is stockpiling, would sensibly tell anybody that they're stockpiling.

PancakeAndKeith · 31/07/2019 15:51

How do you know you’ve not met anyone doing it. I’ve not told anyone, mainly because I’m not stockpiling as such, just making sure I’ve got enough.

SistemaAddict · 31/07/2019 15:54

twitterbird sensible preppers don't tell anyone IRL so as not to have any muppets that haven't established a stockpile cone begging for their supplies.

Socksontheradiator · 31/07/2019 16:03

Absolutely @twitterbird!

bellinisurge · 31/07/2019 16:04

"I think it is madness and have not come across a single person in real life doing it"
Because they don't want you rocking up saying "feed me" with whatever sob story you want to construct @twitterbird

Socksontheradiator · 31/07/2019 16:04

I meant that comment for @Bercows sorry

Socksontheradiator · 31/07/2019 16:11

It would be very interesting to know if those who actively think it's nonsense to stockpile have read anything at all about JiT or are simply accepting the 'it will all be fine' rhetoric from no dealers.
Surely if there is any doubt that there might be disruption and supplies could be short, it's worth getting a few bits in.
Is the horror at the idea of a stash a way of proving your belief that no deal is a great plan?

bellinisurge · 31/07/2019 16:14

I think that any suggestion that this might not be a good thing is too hard for some people to face. Me, I don't care what you say in rl or even on here. As long as you get a buffer in and keep drama at the supermarkets at a minimum by not adding to it. I'm not going to check what you have ffs.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2019 16:14

"This" being No Deal, btw
