Why do people here have a stash for Brexit?

I can see the point if it's medicines or medical supplies, but I've seen a few threads here where people are stashing tuna, toilet rolls and sweets!?

Are you all fucking mad?

I'm a total remainder but come on, I know it'll be shit but you'll still find asda and tesco will be open

What I really, really don't get is the animosity towards people who are creating a bit of a stash, who is it hurting? Worst case scenario, we need it, we use it.... we're not fighting with you at the supermarket tills.
Best case scenario, we don't need it, we use it as we please or donate it to food banks. We haven't hurt anybody either way so why the "mad, stupid, brainless" comments? 🤷🏽‍♀️

Parker231 · 31/07/2019 16:48

@twitterbird - where are you planning on getting your food from in a (what is looking likely) no deal Brexit? What are your suggestions for resolving the JiT supply chain issues?

Because lack of BeLeaving KILLS BREXIT FAIRIES Grin

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 31/07/2019 17:28

Given the option of being mad and brainless with a food supply and being highly intelligent without, I know which option I’d pick.

iwantadishwasher · 31/07/2019 17:31

Nobody with even a smidge of brain function, who is stockpiling, would sensibly tell anybody that they're stockpiling.

Mad and brainless with a full tummy.

🤣 Nanny Plum would soon sort out Boris!

Clavinova · 31/07/2019 18:53

I guess we are expecting a surplus of meat - no one is planning to feed Welsh Lamb to the starving masses.

Socksontheradiator · 31/07/2019 19:17

I imagine that the price of meat produced in the UK will shoot up.

Clavinova · 31/07/2019 19:36

The price of beef and lamb is expected to go down - according to reports yesterday.

Socksontheradiator · 31/07/2019 19:42

Oh ok that's good. I was thinking that if there is a run on UK produced meat that the price will increase. I had a quick look and apparently we export the cuts that are unpopular and import what we prefer. I took from that, that the meat eaters among us will need to become more adventurous in our choices. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

SistemaAddict · 31/07/2019 19:43

Clavinova our dear tenacious copy and paste queen who would argue black was white in the face of all evidence to the contrary.

SistemaAddict · 31/07/2019 19:51

Socksontheradiator vegetarianism will increase I think. I'm already veggie so the price of meat or fish is of no concern to me personally but my mum on her state pension is going to struggle on her traditional meat or fish and two veg diet. I'm trying to get her into pasta as we can stash that. She's not that keen but will have the odd dish. It's expensive enough now for meat and fish that she's cut down. There's only one greengrocers locally and it's expensive already. No farm shops within a mile. She's 80 and not about to start growing her veg as her gardening is limited.

AquaPris · 31/07/2019 19:59

@Kazzyhoward were you in Lancaster during Desmond?

Have never seen darkness like that before or since!

bellinisurge · 31/07/2019 20:00

Ah yes @Clavinova . It's all fiiiiiiiiiine.

Socksontheradiator · 31/07/2019 20:03

My mum is 80 too Bercows. She's been quite objectionable about all this because she listens to my brother who thinks I am an idiot. And yet I worry about her still.
I have no idea how to predict what will happen with our UK meat. I doubt very much that providing UK residents with only home grown meat will be a seamless exercise.

Clavinova · 31/07/2019 20:05

Socksontheradiator
You obviously missed yesterday's news - if we have to cull Welsh lambs - we won't be sending any cuts to the EU.

BBC news;
"In addition, it is expected that current UK beef exports to the EU, squeezed by tariffs, could be redirected to the home market, increasing supply and depressing prices."

"The sheep sector would also be badly hit. With current exports to the EU facing tariffs, the home market could become oversupplied and there would be additional pressure from imports of New Zealand lamb."

"The pig, poultry and eggs sectors would also face issues of oversupply in the UK market or stiff competition from third country imports."

Not great for farmers (until they find new markets/prices level/the market adapts) which is why Boris Johnson has promised financial support - but cheaper meat for UK customers.

ChoudeBruxelles · 31/07/2019 20:05

Because it will be a fucking nightmare if we leave without a deal. Things like toilet roll are made from pulp which is mostly imported.

I’d rather buy a few extra bits and put them away than be stuck without stuff I want. If we don’t leave them I can still use it all

Socksontheradiator · 31/07/2019 20:10

I missed that particular bit of news, Clarovina. But that's the point isn't it? We currently export meat. It isn't as simple as no longer exporting it and eating it ourselves, as I have read many BeLeavers saying on need it threads elsewhere.
I may have missed your point but I thought that's what your post about Welsh lamb implied. My apologies if I misunderstood.

Clavinova · 31/07/2019 20:15

Things like toilet roll are made from pulp which is mostly imported.

"One of the UK's major toilet tissue importers has been stockpiling to ensure it can maintain supplies in the event of a no-deal Brexit."

"German-owned Wepa has stockpiled an extra 600 tonnes of finished product, or about 3.5m rolls, in UK warehouses."

"UK boss Mike Docker said Wepa was now chartering ships to import materials, rather than use trucks."

"Wepa in the UK is based in Bolton, and has a production site in Bridgend, in South Wales. It has taken on an extra 60,000 square feet of warehousing space for stockpiling."

"In addition to the finished product, it has also shipped in extra cardboard and tissue."

"Wepa sells toilet paper and kitchen roll which used by retailers for their own-brand products.Customers include Lidl, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, and Tesco."

"When the firm starting preparing its so-called "Brexit buster" plan, it looked at the worst-case scenario - leaving without a deal - and prepared for that, Mr Docker said."

"It was planning to start shipping tissue from a supplier in Naples, rather than using trucks, as that was felt to be more environmentally friendly, and to cut down on paperwork."

"Brexit made the firm accelerate those plans, he said."

That's fine. Smile

But but but people who stockpile for Brexit are idiots.

Clavinova · 31/07/2019 20:47

PancakeAndKeith
500 toilet rolls under the bed and cupboard full of uht milk is a little extreme, yes.

PancakeAndKeith · 31/07/2019 20:53

That’s not what people are doing though.
(That said I buy mine in boxes of 48 and I’m going to make sure I’ve got my next delivery before Brexit)
