Why do people here have a stash for Brexit?

I can see the point if it's medicines or medical supplies, but I've seen a few threads here where people are stashing tuna, toilet rolls and sweets!?

Are you all fucking mad?

I'm a total remainder but come on, I know it'll be shit but you'll still find asda and tesco will be open

bell "optimistic salad leaves" Grin.

My summer salad leaves have just been annihilated by caterpillars.

How dare you be so negative? Don’t you know you’re killing Brexit fairies? You should instead see this as a great new opportunity - EAT THE CATERPILLARS GrinGrinGrin

element I do actually have this recipe card for bugs in my kitchen actually. Might start growing my own insects Hmm.

BrendasUmbrella · 30/07/2019 18:52

I'm the sole living parent of my dc's, closest family 3 hours away and I don't drive or have much money.

I'm stocking up because it makes me feel a bit more secure. If the shit does hit the fan those with connections and transport and plenty of savings will be fine. If you know you're already on thin ice it makes sense to protect yourself as much as possible. The mockers won't be around to help me if it does go tits up. And does anyone really trust Boris?

My MIL laughed at me for stocking up, yet she constantly has a fully stocked pantry and two crammed fridge freezers...

SistemaAddict · 30/07/2019 19:00

@Camomila Belgium for nappies I believe.

Theworldisfullofgs · 30/07/2019 19:03

Have you seen the pound today?

Prices for some foods have already risen above inflation in the last three years.

AutumnCrow · 30/07/2019 19:14

Johnson pretending to be interested in looking at eggs today in Wales, on C4 News. Offering empty assurances to Welsh farmers.

Arguing and blathering with Leo Varadkar on the phone about Irish backstop.

I'm getting some long life milk in.

daisypond · 30/07/2019 19:15

Why? I’m taking back control, of course. I’ve eaten through my March stuff and am now starting again.

SistemaAddict · 30/07/2019 19:16

Having read the first couple of hours of the thread thread I call:

HOUSE!!

Lack of intelligence and neurotic hey? Hmmm.

mindproject · 30/07/2019 19:23

Because prices go up, they always do; and they already have gone up a lot in the last 3 years. Meanwhile my poverty wages stay the same year in year out. A big supply of non-perishables makes really good financial sense.

megletthesecond · 30/07/2019 19:27

Another reason to squirrel some bits away is in case I'm moved to universal credit. Even if Brexit doesn't cause big problems I'm sure that 5 weeks without tax credits will be a pain.

AutumnCrow · 30/07/2019 19:51

Yes there will be a perfect storm of Universal Credit, food bank shortages and price rises anyway.

CrunchyCarrot · 30/07/2019 19:55

I haven't read through this thread as yet, I will later, but my reason for stockpiling is because I am disabled and can't just nip out to the shops. I also have special dietary and medical requirements, so rather than just cross my fingers and hope for the best, I am being what I consider to be sensible and am stocking up on foods that I know I can eat, just in case there are supply problems, or indeed, if we have inclement weather, or ill health. I do not care what people think about this, it's my decision (and has had the beneficial side effect of decluttering to make space!)

SistemaAddict · 30/07/2019 19:55

For all the doubting Thomas posters: have a look at the labels on your food and see where they come from-I was amazed at how much wasn't produced here. If you have time when you go shopping then have a look there and see where things are from too. Toilet paper might be produced here but the wood pulp comes from Sweden is it? Not here anyway. Our local fruit farm provides strawberries for a few locals for a week each year. A week. Nappies aren't made here. Ours come from Belgium. Sanitary towels aren't made here either nor is cotton wool. Once you realise where things come from and the fact we don't make it here at all in many cases then you might see the sense in having a buffer against no deal. Especially if you have children to feed. I'm happy to go without a meal a day if need be but my children need feeding.

Screamanger · 30/07/2019 19:56

They are deluded that's why. Brexit "preppers" are truly bonkers

A. Why does it matter to you?
B. Failure to plan is planning to fail.

I prep for a number of reasons. I have been urging my family in in the UK to store food fuel and spares because you just don’t know what will happen

TheElementsSong · 30/07/2019 20:00

Having read the first couple of hours of the thread thread I call: HOUSE!!

Actually, I am disappointed by the relatively poor, half-hearted efforts of the BeLeavers on this thread. Even the drive-by empty slogans are kind of flaccid lately.

Branster · 30/07/2019 20:12

Wow I was dying to ask this question but too much of a whimp to face the backlash and swearing Grin
Can’t wait to read the comments.
Very strange behaviour to me, but I can understand if someone is really worried, it might feel like they do what is within their power to protect the family from some unknown evil.
Simkin your comment made me laugh Grin

Socksontheradiator · 30/07/2019 20:21

Well, it would be madness for anyone who believes that NDB is a good thing to bother to build up a buffer. Particularly if that person was immune to redundancy, sickness, bad weather, universal credit cock ups and the like.
If that is you, branster I'd say you'd be much better served by keeping your provisions the the bare minimum and just popping to the shops as and when you need to Wink

Embroiderygirl · 30/07/2019 20:23

I don't get why it is such an issue to you. My prepping is not affecting you, I have been prepping for several months and am not panic buying and causing shortages. If you don't like it fine but there's no need to swear at those of us who are doing what we believe is the best for our families and are genuinely of the opinion that this country is about to crash over the edge of a cliff.

And for the record in reply to the comment about peppers being neurotic/stupid/uneducated, no I'm bloody not. I have a first class honours degree in International Relations and family who worked in customs years ago.....I am very well informed and know exactly what I'm bloody well doing.

SalrycLuxx · 30/07/2019 20:43

not To worry embroiderygirl I’m sure I can help level down the stupid scale. Oh...maybe not. But I do only have one degree rather than the three DH is overachieving with.

Why people think that it’s stupid to look at facts rather than unicorns, consider probably consequences and then take appropriate and well planned action I will never know. Actually, that’s wrong too. Half of them believe in the crap the brexiteers come out with and the other half think that those prepping are judging those who aren’t.

To be fair, I am judging those who aren’t.

iwantadishwasher · 30/07/2019 20:45

I think we will still be in the EU on 1st November. There's going to be a GE and art. 50 will be extended, that's my prediction.

So, no I don't think I don't think the sky will fall in, but there's always a possibility that things will go badly wrong.

No harm in being prepared and I can't understand why Leavers are so needled by people doing just that. I will continue quietly stocking up, just in case.

Socksontheradiator · 30/07/2019 21:00

Yes it is odd that they are so needled. It can get irritating, but I have noticed that the peppers are gently offering guidance for people who want to follow suit, and giving their reasons for doing so.
Personally I'm not clever enough in politics to be certain about any outcome, but I'm kind hearted enough to want to encourage people to have a stocked larder for the myriad of reasons that it might be necessary.
When our kids were small there were times when we were struggling to feed them. Things are better now but I'll never forget the kindness of strangers in the most difficult times.
If anyone reading this thread is able to survive lean times due to the advice on here, I'm willing to take the flack from those who are laughing.

Jason118 · 30/07/2019 21:33

@Socksontheradiator beautifully written

ElPontifico · 30/07/2019 22:54

Hmmm.

We have a government who gave a ferry contract to a company wth no boats.

We have a government who triggered Brexit with a time limit that expired 4 months ago, but have failed to arrange it.

Now, do I trust them to ensure an orderly transition? Or do I get an extra few packets of pasta in, just in case?
