Westminstenders: Prime Minister Johnson

It is actually happening.

By 5pm tomorrow Johnson should be Prime Minister, if nothing major goes wrong for him.

Phillip Hammond is expected to resign early in the morning. And there maybe others.

Parliament goes into recess on Thursday. Giving Johnson only enough time to announce a Cabinet and maybe give a brief statement in Parliament.

As it stands Johnson will have an effective majority of 1 if the Brecon by-election goes the way expected next week.

Unless someone else defects. Which isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

We also have Charlie Elphicke now suspended and facing a court appearance on 6th September, just 3 days after Parliament returns after the summer recess.

Remember when parliament returns Johnson must get a Queen's Speech vote to pass to start the new session.

The return of Parliament is 8 weeks before 31st October.

If Johnson can't pass a Queen's Speech... Is there time for a GE before 31st October? By the skin of our teeth? Or a crucial recall petition?

So for all the talk that parliament can we prevented from being prorogued or that we can get a deal by the 31st October, there is a GE shaped problem.

As for Johnson's plan for Brexit. Don't expect to see him say anything but waffly bollocks before that key Queens Speech vote. He can't. Instead expect lots of domestic promises - in part to distract, in part in prep for a possible snap election.

Of course to have an extension the Prime Minister needs to ask for it. Would a GE be enough to get one? And would we be granted one?

On the flip to that is the prospect of May's Deal. Much has been made of its death. But some have said its premature to say that. At the eleventh hour should the situation arise would parliament vote for it, backstop and all, to prevent no deal? Its not beyond the realms of possibility.

All the talk of Johnson driving a change of direction by the force of personality is nonsense. Johnson can use his personality domestically for support, but he his personality offers nothing to the EU.

On top of this all we have the Iran Oil Tanker Crisis. The US were alleged to have set us up, and now told us to look after our own tankers. Leaving us to look to Europe for international security cooperation in the area... Irony isn't lost.

Let us see what tomorrow might bring though...

Playing with matches for fun and profit

The80sweregreat · 24/07/2019 11:14

The idea of the Queen pointing her finger Alan Sugar style and firing them all made me smile. I can't see it happening but would send shock waves.

billysboy · 24/07/2019 11:18

pity a few of you dont put as much energy into a positive can do rather than doom and gloom

pamperramper · 24/07/2019 11:19

So Boris has decided to do a full Trump? Hiring the most extreme and dangerous right wing nutters, who want to take the country down.

pamperramper · 24/07/2019 11:21

I see that getting out of the Human Rights Convention is next on Cummings' To Do list.

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 11:22

Pity others don't understand international political reality, how trade deals work, the rules of the WTO (paragraph c anyone?), what a customs union is, or what the Good Friday Agreement is.

Yes let's just have optimism, cos that's all we need...

Yes he's mentioned that before. Expect it to feature in election promises.

Note incompatibility with the Good Friday Agreement.

Hang on a minute. OK I was joking about the Queen hence the Grin. Are you joking in your the follow up post where you suggest Corbyn could be "disappeared?" How likely do you think that is, honestly?

Was watching a documentary on YouTube last night about Ceausescu and its sounding like that level of conspiracy.

As for "quelling legitimate protest and opposition". What evidence do you have for suggesting the armed forces will be deployed to do this please?

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 11:25

James Forsyth @jgforsyth
Hear that Dom Cummings was meant to be having an operation under general anaesthetic this morning. But he cancelled it last night after discussions with Boris Johnson & has rearranged for after October 31.

Cummings has told friends that he’s going to Number 10 to get Brexit delivered by October 31st however hard that is and then he’ll focus on his health. What jobif anyhe does next for Boris, won’t be decided until after October 31

GENERAL ELECTION

We are absolutely delighted to see Mr Johnson as PM, democracy will be restored, some sanity returning the benches. Completing Brexit and winning a new GE in the spring.
A new chapter beckons, and I for one am delighted to get the country snapped out of paralysis and deadlock.

StripeyChina · 24/07/2019 11:27

So, an unexpected phone call from Universal Credit.
The paperwork i handed into the JobCentre 6 weeks ago proving my exemption for UC (severe disability payment) has 'not reached the decision maker' (but my claim to backdate it has already been rejected). So, I need to do a 30mile roundtrip to my nearest JC (with 2 ASD kids in tow) to provide it again as 'until they have it they cannot consider paying it'. So that 6 weeks can go to hell i guess?
And Boris considers £250K p/a journalism salary 'chicken feed'.

I'm not bitter.
But I do BlameBoris

Coppersulphate · 24/07/2019 11:34

Boris is just the PM we need. He will get us out of the EU at last. We have waited over 3 years for the result of the referendum to he implemented.
He is optimistic and so am I.

Icantreachthepretzels · 24/07/2019 11:44

Well I for one believe completely these pro boris posts are legitimate. They sound real and everything and like they were posted by completely different people Hmm

She’s got her lovely EU blue outfit on as she left Downing Street.

Do you think that’s deliberate?

Moanranger · 24/07/2019 11:57

I am still stewing about BJ’s comparison of the moon landing with Brexit, to wit:
Does he have any idea about how many countless hours it took of mathematicians, physicists, aeronautical engineers to accomplish it. Not “ positive thinking” BS, but a realistic complex assessment of the thrust required to escape the earth’s gravitational pull, among many, many other challenges.
These technicians (mainly PhDs) were nameless, paid civil service salaries and did it for the technical challenge it posed as well as love of country. To compare BJs Brexit “planning” to this is, frankly, obscene.
Rant over- glad to get that off my chest.

SistemaAddict · 24/07/2019 12:00

pity a few of you dont put as much energy into a positive can do rather than doom and gloom

As soon as something positive happens I'll be doing the happy dance.

TruthOnTrial · 24/07/2019 12:01

Refuse to acknowledge BJ as PM, its BS. Hes a not even a manchild, but a bully of a babychild, who is in excellent company with DT who shouldn't have made it to presidency.

Populist bollocks, BJ just following the DT MO

Cailleach1 · 24/07/2019 12:01

Rumour of Dominic Cummings as Johnson's chief of staff...
This is not good.

Echo you all.

It is most base situation. Remember the Parliamentary Committee he appeared on with Andrew Tyrie presiding. Mendacious, deluded (and/or trying to delude) and bad intentioned would be my personal take on it. Tyrie obviously found him repugnant. And now he is special advisor.

Cailleach1 · 24/07/2019 12:19

The rest of the EU don't seem to exist in the tone deaf vacuum now in British politics. The German ambassador to Ireland, Deike Potzel reaffirmed Germany's support and understanding of the effect of Brexit on the Island of Ireland.

Ms Potzel said the German government remains firmly of the view that changes can be made to the political declaration on the future UK-EU relationship but not to the Withdrawal Agreement.

While Brexit is "less of a topic in Germany", she believes people "know and understand the Irish situation".

"There has been a lot of coverage in Germany media. The political class in Germany understands full well what [Brexit] is about and what it means for Ireland and peace on the island," she said.

However, if the UK crashes out on October 31 it is likely to spark an immediate blame game amid travel confusion and economic turmoil.

Even then Ms Potzel argues Germans will understand why Ireland insisted on a legal way of keeping the Border open.
