It is actually happening.

By 5pm tomorrow Johnson should be Prime Minister, if nothing major goes wrong for him.

Phillip Hammond is expected to resign early in the morning. And there maybe others.

Parliament goes into recess on Thursday. Giving Johnson only enough time to announce a Cabinet and maybe give a brief statement in Parliament.

As it stands Johnson will have an effective majority of 1 if the Brecon by-election goes the way expected next week.

Unless someone else defects. Which isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

We also have Charlie Elphicke now suspended and facing a court appearance on 6th September, just 3 days after Parliament returns after the summer recess.

Remember when parliament returns Johnson must get a Queen's Speech vote to pass to start the new session.

The return of Parliament is 8 weeks before 31st October.

If Johnson can't pass a Queen's Speech... Is there time for a GE before 31st October? By the skin of our teeth? Or a crucial recall petition?

So for all the talk that parliament can we prevented from being prorogued or that we can get a deal by the 31st October, there is a GE shaped problem.

As for Johnson's plan for Brexit. Don't expect to see him say anything but waffly bollocks before that key Queens Speech vote. He can't. Instead expect lots of domestic promises - in part to distract, in part in prep for a possible snap election.

Of course to have an extension the Prime Minister needs to ask for it. Would a GE be enough to get one? And would we be granted one?

On the flip to that is the prospect of May's Deal. Much has been made of its death. But some have said its premature to say that. At the eleventh hour should the situation arise would parliament vote for it, backstop and all, to prevent no deal? Its not beyond the realms of possibility.

All the talk of Johnson driving a change of direction by the force of personality is nonsense. Johnson can use his personality domestically for support, but he his personality offers nothing to the EU.

On top of this all we have the Iran Oil Tanker Crisis. The US were alleged to have set us up, and now told us to look after our own tankers. Leaving us to look to Europe for international security cooperation in the area... Irony isn't lost.

Let us see what tomorrow might bring though...

Completing Brexit and winning a new GE in the spring.
Why would there be a GE in the spring?
FTPA = next one not due for years

MockerstheFeManist · 24/07/2019 12:49

The problem for Cummings is that he will now be classed as a civil servant and unable to avoid summons from select ctees.

He will also be subject to the Civil Service Code of Conduct, which may well say something about not telling the public enormous porkie pies.

bellabelly · 24/07/2019 12:54

Not sure that's true - if he's appointed as a Special Advisor (SPAD), that's a political appointment and he won't be a civil servant. He was previously a SPAD for Michael Gove back in the day when he was Education Secretary.

prettybird · 24/07/2019 12:55

Cummings really didn't want to be at that Select Committee and it showed. He visibly treated the whole process of accountability with contempt Angry

TruthOnTrial · 24/07/2019 12:57

Loving the Private Eye cover!!

Something of my own to post, just a reminder of all the twists and turns

You assume he won't flaunt it.

He will.

Spads are governed by their own Code of Conduct:

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/579768/code-of-conduct-special-advisers-dec-2016.pdf

They are ^temporary civil servants appointed in accordance with Part 1 of the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act 2010. Special advisers are bound by the standards of integrity and honesty required of all civil servants as set out in the Civil Service Code. However, they are exempt from the general requirement that civil servants should be
appointed on merit and behave with impartiality and objectivity...^

Applause in the HoC!

(taboo that)

Thought May was dignified and did well with that, even if I disagree with some (most) of what she said.

Hey @beyondthefridge, you can’t disappear until you’ve at least told us your thoughts on the following:

  1. Cats
  2. Postal voting
  3. Boden
TokyoSushi · 24/07/2019 13:11

Right, is Phil going to resign now? Anybody else?

The rumours (twitter) that Priti Patel going to the Home Office are getting louder, and Raab at the Foreign office - good grief!

Is BJ just going to boot JH out altogether?

TokyoSushi · 24/07/2019 13:13

PS, just for the avoidance of doubt: I have a cat but my pictures never post on MN, I've just applied for a postal vote as I assume I'll be manning a polling station again very soon, and I'm a big fan of the Boden sale, but they won't reduce the bloody Santorini swimsuit which I 'need' for my holiday!

I'm not sure if these are the right answers, but feel that you need to know!

Alsohuman · 24/07/2019 13:19

Oh please, not Patel in the Home Office.

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 13:21

For the record

I don't like cats.

I have never even been in Boden. Much less made a purchase from them.

I am back on the electoral roll from 1st August after a palaver of being initially rejected and having to then supply proof of identity. I like to vote in person.

Waiting on Spreadsheet Phil now. He won't let Johnson sack him, will he?

And Hunt? Not sure he's a backbencher who will stay quiet.

Woah...pretty sure Labour’s shadow justice secretary Richard Burgon just said “call a by-election you fucker” to @IanAustinMP #pmqs

Good news folks!

We have one more May speech to go. Bet you are all looking forward to it.

Tom Rayner @RaynerSkyNews
Theresa May’s spokesman confirms she will make a statement outside Number 10 in just over an hour. Before that she will have lunch with her husband Philip in the Downing Street garden on the terrace outside the cabinet room before saying goodbye to staff

CrunchyCarrot · 24/07/2019 13:30

Thanks Red.

I swear I saw a tear in May's eyes as she passed the Speaker on her way out of the HoC.

TokyoSushi · 24/07/2019 13:31

Tom Newton Dunn
@tnewtondunn
Justice Secretary David Gauke has resigned.

urbanlife · 24/07/2019 13:31

I have been touring Europe, and unlike three years ago everyone we have met are applauding Brexit. Unlike before the rest of Europe are also waking up.

MockerstheFeManist · 24/07/2019 13:31

May's premiership ends in characteristic muddle and confusion. The car took her to the Palace to resign, then doubled back when she remembered she had to make aspeech and feed Larry.

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 13:32

Robert Peston@peston
One hugely important consequence of Vote Leave and Cummings takeover of 10 Downing Street is they will endeavour to properly and URGENTLY honour the bus promise of £350m a week for NHS. A senior Vote Leave source tells me to expect “big NHS rebuilding programme very...

“fast”. He added: “our team was deadly serious about the NHS and with Brexit it will be their top priority to get cash to frontline starting immediately”.

Amazing.

They are going to dust off the bus for the General Election campaign.

Cos they think they can pull the same trick twice.

Phillip Hammond @philliphammonduk
I have just handed in my resignation to @theresa_may. It has been a privilege to serve as her Chancellor of the Exchequer for the last three years.

urbanlife It just goes to show. I still get sympathetic looks and pats on the back from Europeans I meet.
Occasionally a small amount of laughter about the absolute Horlicks we are making of everything but mostly sympathy that we are self immolating for no good reason.

I do like cats although the very old grumpy Siamese who owns me would tell you I chronically under feed him.
I am now middle aged enough to like Boden and I almost don't care about this.
I am a registered overseas postal voter.

Patel and Rabb what on earth !!

OublietteBravo · 24/07/2019 13:45

I’m horribly allergic to cats, so try to avoid them at all costs.

I don’t currently have a postal vote - I might have to change this depending on the timing of a GE as I have lots of business travel in September/October. Although given I had a proxy vote for DH at the recent council/mayoral elections I might just get him to reciprocate

I’ve already confessed to my recent Boden sale shopping spree.

I live in Germany
Ordinary people decided months ago that the Uk has gone crazy

  • also polls consistently show the German public opposes any more concessions to the UK

Since the ref, support for the EU has gone up in member countries
