Westminstenders: Prime Minister Johnson

It is actually happening.

By 5pm tomorrow Johnson should be Prime Minister, if nothing major goes wrong for him.

Phillip Hammond is expected to resign early in the morning. And there maybe others.

Parliament goes into recess on Thursday. Giving Johnson only enough time to announce a Cabinet and maybe give a brief statement in Parliament.

As it stands Johnson will have an effective majority of 1 if the Brecon by-election goes the way expected next week.

Unless someone else defects. Which isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

We also have Charlie Elphicke now suspended and facing a court appearance on 6th September, just 3 days after Parliament returns after the summer recess.

Remember when parliament returns Johnson must get a Queen's Speech vote to pass to start the new session.

The return of Parliament is 8 weeks before 31st October.

If Johnson can't pass a Queen's Speech... Is there time for a GE before 31st October? By the skin of our teeth? Or a crucial recall petition?

So for all the talk that parliament can we prevented from being prorogued or that we can get a deal by the 31st October, there is a GE shaped problem.

As for Johnson's plan for Brexit. Don't expect to see him say anything but waffly bollocks before that key Queens Speech vote. He can't. Instead expect lots of domestic promises - in part to distract, in part in prep for a possible snap election.

Of course to have an extension the Prime Minister needs to ask for it. Would a GE be enough to get one? And would we be granted one?

On the flip to that is the prospect of May's Deal. Much has been made of its death. But some have said its premature to say that. At the eleventh hour should the situation arise would parliament vote for it, backstop and all, to prevent no deal? Its not beyond the realms of possibility.

All the talk of Johnson driving a change of direction by the force of personality is nonsense. Johnson can use his personality domestically for support, but he his personality offers nothing to the EU.

On top of this all we have the Iran Oil Tanker Crisis. The US were alleged to have set us up, and now told us to look after our own tankers. Leaving us to look to Europe for international security cooperation in the area... Irony isn't lost.

Let us see what tomorrow might bring though...

Trumps endorsement of Boris yesterday and his suggestion that Farage and Boris should work together has gave me nightmares. Farage at Trump rally yesterday was grinning when being questioned on this, it's clear that they have the whole thing stitched up. It is utterly depressing.

SistemaAddict · 24/07/2019 07:31

I still have a headache and to add insult the milk smells funny so I can't have my morning cup of tea. Plus the huge bags of Tetley have gone up by a pound! A whole bloody pound! I've got black coffee instead.

I missed this top trolling yesterday

Guy verhofstadt @guyverhofstadt
Welcome steps towards the formation of an European Naval Force, at the request of the UK, to counter Iranian piracy.

Brexit might mean Brexit, but it's clear Europeans are stronger working together!

Johnson as PM, Truss as Home Sec, Duncan Smith as Chancellor?

A GE, a pact with Farage & a PM who will do Trumps bidding.

I'm very glad i didn't vote Change UK and Rachel Johnson (in the EP elections for the s/w) it seems to me, she is just another opportunist.

Peregrina · 24/07/2019 08:27

I wonder if the LibDems asked Rachel Johnson to leave the party once she supported ChangeUK? Johnson's election is doing wonders for LibDem recruitment.

ChangeUK was always a bit of a mish-mash. It wasn't like the SDP of the 80s.

I wonder who or if any more Tories will jump ship?

Lisette1940 · 24/07/2019 08:36

Thanks Red. Hope you're holding up.

lonelyplanetmum · 24/07/2019 08:36

A random trivia aside. As we are (trying) to become more American I thought I'd read more American history. The 17 th and 36 th presidents of the US were both Johnsons.

.All I knew about Lyndon B was that he followed Kennedy's assassination and that he escalated the Vietnam war.

I didn't know that he also:
~designed the legislation to expand civil rights
~expanded healthcare
~improved aid to education, the arts, urban and rural development, public services and a War on Poverty
~helped millions of Americans rise above the poverty line
~adopted Civil rights bills to ban racial discrimination in public facilities, workplace and housing; ~ prevented southern states disenfranchising African Americans.
~Reformed the immigration system to encourage greater emigration from regions other than Europe.

If only Boris deP Johnson would do any of that. He won't .

I thought parts of his dude speech were interesting. There was rather simplistic unsophisticated acknowledgement of a survival of the fittest philosophy.

Thank Clearly in his view the instincts to look after your own, earn and spend your own money, to look after your own family are noble instincts that trump what he called equally noble instincts to share and to give everyone a fair chance in life. He basically gave a nod to looking after the poorest and the neediest, and building a great society as being subordinate to looking after your own.

We knew that by his voting record but it seemed a very glib justification to me.

Peregrina · 24/07/2019 08:47

If Boris Johnson did find money for education, housing and the thousand and one other groups of people he needs to bribe, then it could stimulate the economy. Find real money that is, not rob Peter to pay Paul.

It doesn't alter the fact that I feel a gut wrenching dread about the future.

OMG, all these delusionists (on radio) who think BJ is a "uniter".
That as long as we exit on 31 Oct that the country will unite.
Because Brexit will be "done" then.
They also must have missed Andrew Neil's interview, where he pretty much evidenced why BJ had achieved very little as London Mayor.
That the threat to shoot ourselves in the foot & bleed all over the EU carpet actually scares the EU.
Like Farage wouldn't merrily stab BJ in back if that action promoted the Faragista cause.
Sigh

We shall endure.

ElenadeClermont · 24/07/2019 08:51

Welcome, Mr Johnson:

Fears are growing that car giant Nissan is on the verge of announcing massive job cuts that would affect its plant in Sunderland.

Reports in Japan suggest that the company will announce on Thursday that it plans to cut 10,000 jobs from its worldwide operations, with most of the cuts coming in Europe.

That would raise huge concerns for employment levels at Nissan’s Sunderland plant, which currently employs around 7,000 people and supports thousands more jobs in the local economy.

QuckTheDuck · 24/07/2019 08:57

Thanks for the thread.

A couple of quick questions:

  1. Patel - who is she?
  1. Why cant BoJo show his brexit cards before September 3rd?
  1. The Queens speech vote - is that the bit where she asks if he can command a majority and either he can, asks for time to get the votes, she can ask someone else to caretake as he CANT get the votes or May cannot resign until he gets them?
Peregrina · 24/07/2019 08:59

I certainly wouldn't wish job cuts on Sunderland, but Nissan did tell their workers that staying in the EU was the better option. So the Sunderland voters will be getting what they voted for.

It will be an interesting test to see what Boris Johnson does with major job losses. I suppose one of his minions will get out a map for him, so he at least knows where Sunderland is.

Oh and I expect a Leaver like Clavinova to tell us how many of the jobs are going in Germany. But not to worry, six jobs have been provided in a shop somewhere.

Peregrina · 24/07/2019 09:02

Patel - who is she?

She is the one May sacked for having talks with Israel, whilst pretending that she just happened to bump into the people on holiday. I think she also wants to cut overseas aid.

prettybird · 24/07/2019 09:03

ljkk - I listened to IDS on BBC Breakfast say pretty much the same thing: that BJ will unite the country because he will leave on 31 October, deal or no deal, because "the British Public is demanding it". Confused

No. Some of the British public are demanding it. Not The British Public Angry

I may have shouted at the TV Wink but there again, that's not new Grin

yolofish · 24/07/2019 09:07

IF Johnson had any courage, he would go see HMQ and tell her that he is cancelling Parliament holidays so he can get on with what needs to be done.

He won't of course...

prettybird · 24/07/2019 09:07

Re when BJ in theory takes over as PM: it will be some time this afternoon. May is doing one last PMQs, then will go from the HoC to the Palace to tell the Queen that she is stepping down and "recommending" Wink BJ as the new PM.

BJ will then go to the Palace and will have to confirm to the Queen that he has the confidence of the House in order to form a government Hmm

Only then will he formally become PM.

OublietteBravo · 24/07/2019 09:08

OMG, all these delusionists (on radio) who think BJ is a "uniter".

I fear he might succeed in uniting the EU27 against the U.K. But I suspect that’s not what they mean.

OublietteBravo · 24/07/2019 09:11

For whoever was asking, 3 September is when the House of Commons returns after the Summer Recess. So Johnson can get away without revealing his Brexit plan until then, because no parliamentary business will be being conducted. So there is no one there to vote on anything.

QuckTheDuck · 24/07/2019 09:18

Excellent, thank you fo rthe answers.

Yes, I recall the she is on holiday but actually dealing with Isreal thing now!

Peregrina · 24/07/2019 09:22

Not The British Public

Not Scotland, N Ireland, London, or Oxford to name a few places, and not the 6 million who signed the petition or the 1.5 million who marched on the previous march. But presumably because we are not TrueBeLeavers we no longer count as British?
