Westminstenders: Prime Minister Johnson

It is actually happening.

By 5pm tomorrow Johnson should be Prime Minister, if nothing major goes wrong for him.

Phillip Hammond is expected to resign early in the morning. And there maybe others.

Parliament goes into recess on Thursday. Giving Johnson only enough time to announce a Cabinet and maybe give a brief statement in Parliament.

As it stands Johnson will have an effective majority of 1 if the Brecon by-election goes the way expected next week.

Unless someone else defects. Which isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

We also have Charlie Elphicke now suspended and facing a court appearance on 6th September, just 3 days after Parliament returns after the summer recess.

Remember when parliament returns Johnson must get a Queen's Speech vote to pass to start the new session.

The return of Parliament is 8 weeks before 31st October.

If Johnson can't pass a Queen's Speech... Is there time for a GE before 31st October? By the skin of our teeth? Or a crucial recall petition?

So for all the talk that parliament can we prevented from being prorogued or that we can get a deal by the 31st October, there is a GE shaped problem.

As for Johnson's plan for Brexit. Don't expect to see him say anything but waffly bollocks before that key Queens Speech vote. He can't. Instead expect lots of domestic promises - in part to distract, in part in prep for a possible snap election.

Of course to have an extension the Prime Minister needs to ask for it. Would a GE be enough to get one? And would we be granted one?

On the flip to that is the prospect of May's Deal. Much has been made of its death. But some have said its premature to say that. At the eleventh hour should the situation arise would parliament vote for it, backstop and all, to prevent no deal? Its not beyond the realms of possibility.

All the talk of Johnson driving a change of direction by the force of personality is nonsense. Johnson can use his personality domestically for support, but he his personality offers nothing to the EU.

On top of this all we have the Iran Oil Tanker Crisis. The US were alleged to have set us up, and now told us to look after our own tankers. Leaving us to look to Europe for international security cooperation in the area... Irony isn't lost.

Let us see what tomorrow might bring though...

Isn’t 6th September the last date that a GE can be called so that it is held before 31st October?

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 09:25

Rumour of Dominic Cummings as Johnson's chief of staff...

This is not good.

PMK (thanks, Red)

Could Priti Patel look any smugger? What has BJ promised her? Ugh.
Glad Hunt is standing firm (tho BJ will boot him, I fear)
Awaiting the news of a cabinet of fools and knaves.

Rumour of Dominic Cummings as Johnson's chief of staff...

FFS. Insane.
We really are living in some Years and Years script.

StripeyChina · 24/07/2019 09:28

But the ultra nauseating Sky piece: 'The Becoming of Boris' is awful!
Did they do that for TM? No. Just lick spittle creeping to an OldEtonian.
#IBlameSky (for my exceptionally bad mood this morning)

I certainly no longer consider myself British (except in the geographic sense that I live on the island of Britain). I consider myself purely Scottish. Smile

I suppose another black mark against me Wink is that I wasn't born in the UK and was naturalised as a child. If BJ (or others) applied Trump's values, I should "go back to where I came from" if I continue to criticise what the Government is doing. Hmm

But I will continue to shout "Not in my name" Grin - as will most of the Westministenders Smile

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 09:30

Isn’t 6th September the last date that a GE can be called so that it is held before 31st October?

No. Minimum a GE can be held is 25 working days from when it's called.

I make that Thurs 19th Sept if we keep to convention of Thursday GE making the GE 24th October. I'm discounting the fact that 31st Oct is also a Thursday.

Don’t worry, prettybird I have one foreign parent - from an EU country no less! In this wonderful new Britain, I’m probably also suspect.

Must admit I’m struggling to retain any sense of optimism or hope that the saner voices will prevail.

tobee · 24/07/2019 09:35

Disappointed I saw no mention on here or about last night's storm being a comment on Johnson government! GrinSad

I was expecting Philip Hammond to have resigned by now!

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 09:37

Yes is big Phil going to resign?

Is it just my MN that has gone screwy?

It's telling me I haven't posted on any threads recently and putting posts on this thread in the wrong order!

My BFF has always been a strong Unionist because she genuinely does believe that the UK is "better together".

She's a true mix of Scottish (mother Scottish, father Scottish Uni educated although from another European country not that you can tell ), Irish (mother is 2nd generation Scottish Catholic, rest of family is Irish) brought up in England, went to Uni in Scotland and has lived for 30 years in Wales, married to a Welshman.

We've had many gentle disagreements about my conversion to wanting Scottish Independence.

Last night I got a rant from her Shock:

OMG I feel independence from England is only way forward. For someone whose mantra is togetherness, being an ‘us’ team rather than having a them & us mentality I just struggle to find any communality with the English Tory Party. There is so much more that divides than unites me with them. What a travesty of common sense & caritas.

I didn't reply saying, "I told you so" Halo Instead I just suggested that if England would only leave the UK, then maybe there is a future for the remaining parts of the UK. I even resisted the temptation to say, "But Wales voted Leave" Halo

MockerstheFeManist · 24/07/2019 09:48

George Canning's 119 days record in under threat. If he makes it past Oct 31 having failed to deliver Brexit, Andrew Bonar Law's 211 days comes into view as the shortest tenure under universal suffrage.

GeistohneGrenzen · 24/07/2019 09:52

pmk

QuckTheDuck · 24/07/2019 09:52

My MN is screwed too - This thread here for example. Had no OP (I recall this happening before?) and then my screenshot and comment WAS the OP) and the OP was a comment. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3646419-to-wonder-what-the-hell-happened

As I said on that thread, #IBlameBoris

OublietteBravo · 24/07/2019 09:53

@RedToothBrush - MN has gone screwy for me too.

I was expecting Philip Hammond to have resigned by now!

Hammond said in his interview, I believe, that he would resign after May had done her final PMQs but before she went to the palace.

MmeBufo · 24/07/2019 10:00

FFS Dominic Cummings as special advisor

prettybird · 24/07/2019 10:41

If you think about it, Hammond is continuing to support May to the end. By not resigning before PMQs but having announced his intention to do so , he is able to sit beside her on the Front Bench as she does her final PMQs.

probstimeforanewname · 24/07/2019 10:43

I’m convinced Johnson will suddenly see the light and revoke

I certainly think that he's talked a load of tosh to get elected.

There's such an easy solution for him - one that will please nobody but solve a lot of issues and that's to go to the EU and say, we are definitely leaving on 31 Oct but forget May's red lines, we are staying in the SM and CU.

Sorts out NI/Ireland border issue (and Gibraltar).

Probably neutralises the risk of a successful Scottish independence referendum, keeping the UK together - the Scots do get dragged out of the EU against their will but the main damage is avoided.

Most remainers and a lot of leavers could live with that.

It makes the whole problem go away and we can get on with sorting out the domestic problems.

But I imagine I am being far too sensible...

LouiseCollins28 · 24/07/2019 10:56

At next state opening of Parliament in September:

HM (with EU stars on her outfit somewhere): "My Government remains resolved to pursue leaving the European Union by 31st October. To prevent this, in the interests of the nation, I have decided that for this Parliament I shall rule as an absolute monarch. You are all fired!" Grin

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 10:57

I'd so love for Hammond to cross the floor but I'm not delusional.

"Rumour of Dominic Cummings as Johnson's chief of staff..."

So Plan A is to lie and keep lying ....

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 11:02

Two things about Cummings. He has all these ideas about what's wrong. But not much on how to put it right. He knows how to run a public campaign of blame though.

MORE signs of a GE being on the cards?

Also he doesn't like the civil service much and wants to burn it down. He also hasn't much love for the lazy thick ERG though.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 24/07/2019 11:07

louise imo, HM QEII is the only one who has been doing her job properly

However, constitutionally, she can't force Revoke (or No Deal), because that is a political decision
I'm pretty sure she is neither Leave nor Remain, but just wants the country to get through this crisis with as little social & economic damage as possible

Her main job over the next few years is to stop a govt using its powers - and the military & intelligence services - to quell legitimate protest and opposition, if the economy goes really badly.
We don't want a Bloody Sunday in England, or for Corbyn & Milne - much as I detest them - to be "disappeared"

Problem is, she's over 90 and I don't have much confidence in the judgement of Charles, in such a complicated & sensitive situation

Queens seem to be v long-lived, so,let's hope she stays in good nick !
God Save The Queen, indeed.
