It is actually happening.

By 5pm tomorrow Johnson should be Prime Minister, if nothing major goes wrong for him.

Phillip Hammond is expected to resign early in the morning. And there maybe others.

Parliament goes into recess on Thursday. Giving Johnson only enough time to announce a Cabinet and maybe give a brief statement in Parliament.

As it stands Johnson will have an effective majority of 1 if the Brecon by-election goes the way expected next week.

Unless someone else defects. Which isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

We also have Charlie Elphicke now suspended and facing a court appearance on 6th September, just 3 days after Parliament returns after the summer recess.

Remember when parliament returns Johnson must get a Queen's Speech vote to pass to start the new session.

The return of Parliament is 8 weeks before 31st October.

If Johnson can't pass a Queen's Speech... Is there time for a GE before 31st October? By the skin of our teeth? Or a crucial recall petition?

So for all the talk that parliament can we prevented from being prorogued or that we can get a deal by the 31st October, there is a GE shaped problem.

As for Johnson's plan for Brexit. Don't expect to see him say anything but waffly bollocks before that key Queens Speech vote. He can't. Instead expect lots of domestic promises - in part to distract, in part in prep for a possible snap election.

Of course to have an extension the Prime Minister needs to ask for it. Would a GE be enough to get one? And would we be granted one?

On the flip to that is the prospect of May's Deal. Much has been made of its death. But some have said its premature to say that. At the eleventh hour should the situation arise would parliament vote for it, backstop and all, to prevent no deal? Its not beyond the realms of possibility.

All the talk of Johnson driving a change of direction by the force of personality is nonsense. Johnson can use his personality domestically for support, but he his personality offers nothing to the EU.

On top of this all we have the Iran Oil Tanker Crisis. The US were alleged to have set us up, and now told us to look after our own tankers. Leaving us to look to Europe for international security cooperation in the area... Irony isn't lost.

Let us see what tomorrow might bring though...

@Hester54 - no I didn't miss it - but you missed the point I made about saying the HO won't enforce . They will - they are brutal - they are like attack dogs - the government just needs to point them in the right direction.
I have intimate- as I said- knowledge of the HO - they can and will . Your argument that they can't is just brexity bullshit.
Which we are all used too....

Hester54 · 25/07/2019 15:51

I don’t want to go back to them times, but nobody should get money for not working, if they can, I don’t see why your taxes and mine should pay people that could work not to work, having a child is a choice and not an excuse

mrslaughan · 25/07/2019 15:51

And - remember- we're the uk - we can do anything - just by believing- you need to try harder to believe....

BigChocFrenzy · 25/07/2019 15:51

Hester I think it unfair to take trained medical staff from developing countries
It may damage those countries severely and affect the health of their populations

However, it is very difficult to the individuals, to keep mc professionals in a country, when they can earn more elsewhere

  • that's the market economy If you want to control people and force them to stay, that's not even socialism; it would need a communist dictatorship

Anyway, my graphs were of E27 doctors in the NHS

Germany and other E27 countries have far more doctors per 100,000 population than we do
That's why I can get same-day GP appointments, choose my own specialists and no wait for specialist services

They are wealthy countries and won't suffer

The80sweregreat · 25/07/2019 15:52

There were some frugal benefits paid in the 1920s and 30s ( my dad is 97 and used to tell me about it) but everything was means tested ' sell your radio first' and men had to sign on twice a day.
Workhouses were held as a threat ; refuse work and you ended up in one. If you couldn't manage you ended up in one. They were feared.

The Tories were in their element as they were reasonably rich and had property and could exploit the poor and had little opposition for years. Nothing much changes really.

Hester54 · 25/07/2019 15:53

mrslaughan I hope they would enforce it but it’s a numbers game, they can’t deport everyone,

bellinisurge · 25/07/2019 15:53

Oo is there a little club? Can I join? Does everyone drink 🍷 and Gin?

BigChocFrenzy · 25/07/2019 15:53

So, I'd much rather take E27 doctors and nurses, since this won't damage their countries of origin in the same way as taking medical staff from developing countries

ListeningQuietly · 25/07/2019 15:54

DON'T FEED THE TROLLS
Seriously folks.
There are posters on here who just want to kick up a stink and add nothing to the analysis.
Do not waste your time and energy on them
as they are not actually listening to anything you say
Gin Wine Brew and Grin

Hazardtired · 25/07/2019 15:54

Ooo I'll go water the patio and try soaking the house bricks while I'm at it....

With Gin

DGRossetti · 25/07/2019 15:55

I still don't understand why all these leavers are posting on here right now, if it's all as good as they say. What do they care?

Because the more of the channel they fill, the less there is for remainers.

As any engineer would tell you: Signal to Noise. If you can't boost your signal, you can drown out your opponents with noise.

It's why the data-snoop'n'hoover laws are fundamentally flawed by making the haystack bigger.

Hester54 · 25/07/2019 15:56

mrslaughan A little belief is good, wouldn’t it be better if we all start to believe in our country, I don’t understand why people in this country love a market controlled organisation ( EU) than their own country

DGRossetti · 25/07/2019 15:56

Hester I think it unfair to take trained medical staff from developing countries It may damage those countries severely and affect the health of their populations

Bearing in mind there are some in the UK that see that as a win/win.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/07/2019 15:57

"Don’t you like it when your little club has a few new members with different opinions than yours,"

It was at least one Brexiter who was demanding that some Remainers stop posting
and also opposing calling a GE

Clearly doesn't like opposing views to be heard

If BJ genuinely has the support of the country, then he'd win a large majority in a GE,
then no more worries about Remainers - or soft Leavers - being able to thwart Brexit.

Hazardtired · 25/07/2019 15:57

To be clear the gin is for me not the house bricks Grin

And don't worry my benefit money doesn't stretch to purchasing gin it was a gift.

OublietteBravo · 25/07/2019 15:57

@Hester54 - we already negotiated a WA with the EU. And since ALL of people who have held the post of Brexit Secretary are his chums (Davis, Raab, Barclay), I’m sure he’s happy with their work (indeed Barclay kept his job yesterday, and Raab has a new job which represents a huge promotion - so Boris obviously has confidence in their abilities). In fact all he needs to do to make Brexit happen is get the WA through parliament.

DGRossetti · 25/07/2019 15:59

Anyone still got properly working sash windows ? Are they doing the job they're supposed to ?

Hester54 · 25/07/2019 15:59

ListeningQuietly Or don’t debate with someone that has a different opinion than yours, just stick to your own kind.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/07/2019 16:00

Back to more serious business:

Lewis Goodall@lewis_goodall

The PM's comments about "unshackling" UK diplomatic staff in Brussels was v peculiar.

There's about 190 staff there- which has gone up because of Brexit-

and it'll go up further still when/if we leave the EU because it'll become a full blown trade/diplo mission.

tobee · 25/07/2019 16:00

I agree with @TheElementsSong. Great comedy. 👍

We still haven't crashed out yet left yet. We shall see what happens.

ListeningQuietly · 25/07/2019 16:01

Belief is one thing ... but facts are what actually affect outcomes.

You can believe in rainbow unicorns .... but the fact is they do not exist

The facts of Brexit have not changed since the WA was finalised.

DGRossetti · 25/07/2019 16:01

The PM's comments about "unshackling" UK diplomatic staff in Brussels was v peculiar.

Not if you've already decided on no deal.

Why is anyone wasting time listening to Boris. Just watch what he does.

The80sweregreat · 25/07/2019 16:02

Will they just vote through WA mark two / fourth outing because Boris says ' that's a good idea now'? Really?
The hypocrisy is astonishing if it did happen!

Hester54 · 25/07/2019 16:02

BigChocFrenzy What good would a GE do at this time, Government have shut down for their well deserved holidays, there will not be enough time to have one before the 31st and the default position is no deal
