Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

Some of my leeks are bolting, so I'm harvesting and freezing those. The rest will stay in the ground until I need them!

bellinisurge · 26/07/2019 19:56

Best thing to do with freezing veg is to chop them and blanch them first. That means drop them into a pot of boiling water for a minute and then drain and plunge into ice cold (not kidding here, ice cold) water.
Then freeze. Get as much air out of the bag you freeze them in as possible.

Getting the air out of a ziplok freezer bag .....
close 95% of the seal
slide in a straw
pinch tightly around the straw
suck hard and once all the air is out, quickly seal the bag
use the straw for several years Wink

I accidentally dehydrated some mushrooms. I think Bellini is out to corrupt us all. Tantalising us with dehydrated food.

Iambuffy · 26/07/2019 20:18

Thank you!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/07/2019 20:21

Forgot to say, our dehydrated mushrooms are really nice. I'll be making some more.
I've got another couple of portions of rhubarb in the freezer. I'm also making a rumtopf with our fruit through the summer which will be delicious for christmas no matter what happens.

I might get my christmas cake ingredients in early come to think of it...

Cooking without tomatoes. Sauces made with milk or soya milk?

Soups made with stock cubes ?

Pasta dishes made with milk sauces etc instead of tomatoes. Or with stock Eg lasagna does not have to be tomatoey.

Think how to make individual diets healthy, so maybe dc1 could get nutrient X from different ingredients to dc2 etc.

Ds and dd are so different in their foods that I have had to stock different things for each child. I was thinking of eating up all the seafood and not replacing it as DD is veggie now but it will make a good substitute to milk for a source of iodine for Ds and I. Calcium from almonds. DD will get hers from soya milk and green veg. I can prioritise Ds for milk if I have alternative sources of nutrients.

I am not going to freeze bread. I think I will get more veg instead.

I think I will look at getting an extra under counter freezer just in case my old one dies. It is due a replacement soon.

Mine is very depleted, I need to start building it back up

bellinisurge · 26/07/2019 21:02

@BlackeyedGruesome , I love it when a plan comes together 😂😂😂

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/07/2019 21:37

Right I am going under the table...

NoWordForFluffy · 26/07/2019 22:02

We freeze our veg on baking trays and then bag up once frozen.

We've just got half a carrier bag of runner and green beans from the allotment, plus courgettes. Our neighbour gave us braid beans too. 😁

We'll have to get a new bean freezer at this rate.

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/07/2019 22:03

11 jars of pasta sauce now with dates written on top.
18 loo rolls
5 bottles balsamic vinegar
2 bottles soy sauce
1 jar of Branston pickle
2 boxes of cornflakes

Assorted tins of beans /tomatoes/ curry/rice pudding.

Had a lovely Mediterranean holiday in late Spring and brought back a load of lemons. Which, naturally , I dehydrated. I've just rehydrated to cheer up a drink of water. Worked brilliantly. Just sayin' @NoWordForFluffy

Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?
bellinisurge · 27/07/2019 17:07

And @BlackeyedGruesome

NoWordForFluffy · 27/07/2019 17:15

I'm not a 'citrus in a drink' fan!

I do have two lemon trees though. But they're too new to have given lemons yet!

bellinisurge · 27/07/2019 17:32

Ginis the answer. To most things. In moderation of course.Smile

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/07/2019 17:40

I am contemplating dried mushrooms.

Just keeping them dried. I do have access to a large number of screw top jars.

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/07/2019 17:42

Previously used to store rice. And something else before hand. What the original contents were is lost in time. Maybe some sort of drink. Possibly Horlicks .. ?

bellinisurge · 27/07/2019 17:42

Anyone wondering whether it's worth it take a look at this thread Confused

Why don’t supermarkets preempt “stuff” http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/3649123-Why-don-t-supermarkets-preempt-stuff

Socksontheradiator · 27/07/2019 17:55

Yes indeed@bellinisurge

SistemaAddict · 28/07/2019 09:41

I discovered last night we were out of beans. How the hell did that happen?!
With renewed talk of no deal being likely then my anxiety is back with a vengeance.
It's pouring down here today and going to do so all day so it seems like a good opportunity to do a stock take.

So I think my plan is to try and eat as frugally as possible through August as ds is away/out a lot and then plough that money back into rebuilding the stash. On the plus side at least the list lot got eaten and wasn’t wasted

SistemaAddict · 28/07/2019 10:13

I borrowed one of jack monroe's books from the library last week and am going to have a look at her others as lots of simple and cheap recipes.

Bellasblankexpression · 28/07/2019 10:42

Jack Monroe has some good recipes via Instagram too a - I found them useful as I was a bit lost with how to turn the tins into actual recipes.

Janista · 28/07/2019 11:10

This is all very nice but you are hysterical if you think the supermarkets are going to be starved of food as a result of Brexit.

Pure fear mongering.
