Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

thank you @AutumnCrow - not looking too positive then for the tinned fish being stored above 90F which it has been the past few days although not deadly at least :-)

BishopofBathandWells · 25/07/2019 19:46

I'm pretty scared about the whole business. I had a stock that would've probably got three of us through a month (at a pinch) but am looking to start seriously prepping again over the next few months. I noticed today that Tesco are selling big bottles of still water for £1.10p. Not sure if I can entirely convince myself it's solely down to the heatwave climate crisis.

Bellasblankexpression · 25/07/2019 19:47

That’s really expensive! I got 35p bottles from Asda - have about 20 x 1 litre in at all times after a sudden cut off of the water supply.
I bet some of my store has turned in this heat :(
I’m going to do another online shop to stock up I think, along with the Costco shop, once I’ve gone through what I’ve already got.

BishopofBathandWells · 25/07/2019 20:07

@Bellasblankexpression Oh I didn't buy any, but I was curious which angle their opportunism was coming from.Grin

AutumnCrow · 25/07/2019 20:27

I've got my boxes of tins in the shade, on a laminate floor, covered with a white cloth (hopefully reflective), next to a through breeze. They seem ok, temp-wise. Fingers crossed.

Bellasblankexpression · 25/07/2019 21:04

@BishopofBathandWells ha yes they’ve obviously decided to be a bit Delboy about it and turn a serious profit!

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/07/2019 23:35

17 p Aldi water here. And water purifying tablets as extras.

I came home with baked beans and icepops today. It is probably a bit hot to restock much. And an ironing board.

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/07/2019 09:18

Going to start stashing the latest haul.

I have time to look round for deals. I do need to write a list though and see what I have got, what I need and where the hell everything is.

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/07/2019 09:19

Ps my courgette plant has now got three tiny leaves. A mouthful each for three snails!.

bigKiteFlying · 26/07/2019 13:29

This makes me feel better - we've depleted the piles and run down the medicines reserves we had - not refilled for a while.

In fact we had expensive spring and the pile was very useful stopped us going into overdraft.

We going to restock after our holiday - should have a few months and if everything turns out fine will help us through Christmas period - though around November is when we starts getting longer term Chrismas food items for anyway.

bellinisurge · 26/07/2019 15:02

Give some thought to the so-called "hungry gap" in early Spring when fresh veg from the UK is thin in the ground.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/07/2019 17:39

The hungry gap is why I'm growing so many green and runner beans! My freezer will be full.

bellinisurge · 26/07/2019 17:40

Unless I lure you over to the dehydration dark side 😂😂😂

NoWordForFluffy · 26/07/2019 17:42

😂😂😂

My kids would view dehydrated food with suspicion, I think. Fussy buggers.

bellinisurge · 26/07/2019 17:44

If you sling it in a soup, they'll never know mwah ha hah.

PhantomErik · 26/07/2019 18:13

My lovely stash is all but gone Sad we've had some horribly tight months with things going wrong & having to fix/replace.

My stash has been a life saver so I really want to build it up again asap but won't be able to even think about doing that until September now.

In the process we've worked out what we use a lot of so I'll start with those eg.

Rice - 6kg bags
Curry sauce
Butter beans
Chickpeas
Pasta
Tinned toms
Stock cubes
Baked beans
Cereal & UHT milk (& soya milk)
Crackers
Marmite & peanut butter
Coffee
Tea
Squash

PhantomErik · 26/07/2019 18:14

Ooh also we've found that frozen brocolli & cauliflower are great in curry.

bellinisurge · 26/07/2019 18:51

A bag of frozen mixed veg dehydrated. Just sayin' @NoWordForFluffy 😂😂😂😂

Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?
NoWordForFluffy · 26/07/2019 18:53

That's so pretty!!

ListeningQuietly · 26/07/2019 19:08

Hides behind large stack of tinned pulses Smile

bellinisurge · 26/07/2019 19:08

I have them too @ListeningQuietly

Iambouddica · 26/07/2019 19:13

We’ve been making in roads into our stash and its been very useful to find out ehat we actually use most of. Trying to do an audit so I can start stocking up again once the weather cools down a bit. It’s not being helped by DD developing a tomato allergy. I am really struggling to think of ways to store a balanced diet without tomatoes?

bellinisurge · 26/07/2019 19:17

@Iambouddica , I didn't eat tomatoes until was about 20. I know we rely on them so much these days (I'm old so I can say "these days") and I hope you work out recipes that work.

Iambuffy · 26/07/2019 19:20

Dh has carrots and leeks growing.
Can I prep amd feeeze them?
How do you suggest? (Total novice as you will have gathered...)
Our stash also depleted as we had to use up some stuff.
Some of it went to the foodbank, none of it wasted.
I guess its back to bulk buying pasta, rice and sauces! :(
Oh, and I ate all our chocolate stash 🤭
Tips on how to keep it out of my grubby mits!??

ListeningQuietly · 26/07/2019 19:24

Leeks - leave them in the ground till the day you want to eat them
Carrots - leave them in the ground till the day you want to eat them
once you have eaten REALLY fresh veg you'll never go back :-)
