Brexit

Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

They’ve run out of paracetomel.

How do you legally keep the hordes from your stash after the apocalypse or is it the end of the world and it doesn’t matter.

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/08/2019 02:34

Loads of paracetamol in the shops here.

bellinisurge · 27/08/2019 05:36

@darkcloudsandsunnyskies they haven't run out of paracetamol and you don't tell anyone you have stuff.
If things are so extreme you have rationing, you go along with that in a low key way so that you don't stand out.

CrunchyCarrot · 27/08/2019 06:28

First rule of keeping a stash - never talk about the stash!

NoWordForFluffy · 27/08/2019 07:07
  1. Loads of paracetamol here.
  2. Nobody is anticipating the apocalypse / end of civilisation. Shortages, price rises and some chaos in the shops if stuff is unavailable / shoots up in price are very likely though.
  3. The first rule of stockpiling is you don't talk about stockpiling.

We have a name for our stockpile which means we can refer to retrieving something from it in public - if necessary - without suspicion!

The first rule of stockpiling?

Paraphrasing Fight Club!

I have loo roll, tea and toothbrushes in plentiful amounts so I'm good for now. One of the head torches has gone walkabout and I've yet to get a good supply of batteries. They seem so expensive even on offer Sad

eBay for batteries, @Bercows. They're way cheaper than shops (industrial Duracell).

Dontlickthetrolley · 27/08/2019 13:56

@Bercows I was in £land yesterday and they had Kodak batteries of various shapes and sizes, I managed to get the cell batteries I needed but noticed that had normal and square too.

I bought a bar of green &black chocolate for someone whose birthday is in feb- but I ended up opening it fter discovering some of the other chocolate I had bought had already melted. I've transfered the rest to the fridge for now, but should have realised it was likey to do so. Blush

I'm hoping my who gives a crap trial will arrive today as I leave tomorrow.

Yes to not telling others you have extra! I know I'm lucky in being able to stock up a bit for my sister and mother whilst I stayed with them.

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/08/2019 17:44

Oh my it is hot. Two storage areas emptied and refilled with longer date food.

Got to sort the understairs cupboard to put away suitcases after holiday. I have emptied them washed the beach towels, tea towels, tin opener, hand towels, waterproof sheet, baking trays and returned to suitcases for next year.

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/08/2019 17:51

And grr to ds who has just sworn at me that Brexit will be alright as it would be all over the media if not.

I guess he means Jack sucks at life... In terms of media.

Hello @SheLivesInHope! I love the Jack Monroe books too. I am much more capable of putting a meal together with tinned stuff now.
I feel same way about loved ones and stashing. I've ended up stockpiling enough for my mum because she just laughs at me. But I don't want her to starve.
With friends, I've mentioned some of the news items about stockpiling. And then muttered about liking to keep freezer full because I know what it's like to have nothing.
Responses have been varied!

Socksontheradiator · 27/08/2019 17:58

Also no ice cream. Doesn't take long, does it?
Also swearing in the heat, despite a relatively cool house.
I feel for you *Blackeyedgruesome

I still think if no deal still looks to be on the cards come mid Sept, there will be a 'dawning realisation' among the general public, and panic buying will begin.
I can't help myself, and buy a packet of rice and some tins every time I'm in the shops Confused

Socksontheradiator · 27/08/2019 18:03

@Orangecake, good for you, you sound like a lovely sister/daughter

NoWordForFluffy · 27/08/2019 18:10

As long as it's still replaceable, any increased buying would hopefully only have a temporary effect on stock levels in Sept.

I'm OK for the stereotypical panic buying stuff. It's flour and yeast and a few more toiletries next month and then it'll be working out the fresh food (combined with fussy kids) conundrum.

Socksontheradiator · 27/08/2019 18:20

Yes, agreed, but I do think that mid to late Sept is when it could get busier. And given the effect a day or two of hot weather has on ice cream, I can easily imagine temporary shortages.

Ok, that makes sense, but I still maintain that unless there is significant movement towards stopping no deal, there will be more of a rush to begin stockpiling among people who haven't thought it necessary up to this point. So shops will be a bit madder, no?
I know how the JiT system works, and how current levels of stockpiling don't affect supply, but, if everyone is suddenly out there doing extra shopping because time is getting short, there is going to be a bit of a knock on effect.
So what I'm saying is that people who already know they want to stockpile would be wise to get ahead now
I used ice cream as it was mentioned above, but same equally happens when there's a run on anything. There must be limits to how quickly the system can adjust to a sudden change to buyers' behaviour.

So, another task crossed off my to-do list - had an eye test today (just shy of 2 years, but didn't want to wait till after Brexit) and got a new pair of reading glasses prescribed, so that means I will actually be able to read all those 'use by' dates!! Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 27/08/2019 20:25

I'd love to buy more now, but my bank account is already crying and it's a month to pay day! So while I know what you're saying, Socks, I can't buy more this month.
