Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

@prettybird, who left the heating on in Glasgow?! Taps aff for sure round this way! 😂

Forward purchasing while the shops can re-stock easily is way better than waiting until supplies are limited (if they are).

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 17:12

I was only going to do a top up shop on my own but had company and this makes it more difficult, though they did carry a couple of bags up the stairs to the flat.

I bought loo roll, chopped tomatoes, chickpeas and curry to add to the stash. But not vast amounts. I will do a weekly shop more often.

I have been converted to some Lidl products though. I will do a trip there soon.

I have had the children with me a lot recently. One banged their head and refused to go to their dad, hence company when shopping.

MarshmallowManiac · 25/08/2019 18:00

Loved the flavoured rice in Lidl Blackeyed, especially the tomato and garlic one yum

prettybird · 25/08/2019 18:06

Nowordforfluffy - it is indeed far too hot for our not used to heat blood Shock

I ended up retreating inside into the semi cool at the rugby club, came home and have hung out a washing and done some desultory picking of sweet peas and inspection of the green house and have again retreated into the house as I'm knackered too hot (the joy of a North facing, high ceilinged Victorian house Wink)

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 18:52

Try a low ceilinged west facing flat.

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 19:00

I don't like the way Lidl arrange their stock. It was difficult to see and read prices. Lidl was one of two options on holiday, they do have a few things Aldi doesn't though. Going to stock up on those and a few general bits and pieces. They had cheap Magnums though and it made me very happy.

We need to eat up the ice-cream to make room for veg.

Thinking about a dehydrator....

Bellini is corrupting me...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/08/2019 19:20

My rumptopf is complete after a blackberry pick this afternoon. Not allowed to touch it until Christmas now!

I've also cooked down a big batch of tomatoes. I think I need to work on doing some oven dried tomatoes with my next pickings. I'm not sure about storing them though?

I'm also thinking of doing dried pears in the oven (or my dehydrator if I crack and buy one, finances are tight at the moment)

bellinisurge · 25/08/2019 19:21

Mwah hah hah!

damnit, I showed dh and now we have one arriving on Tuesday.
To be fair, our mushrooms we did in the oven are totally lush and we. have a massive crop of apples, pears and tomatoes on their way.

I just need to find storage containers now!

bellinisurge · 25/08/2019 20:01

The other jar (actually 2) is a bag of frozen veg dehydrated . I dislike frozen veg but reluctantly admit they are useful. I resent all the space they take up on my freezer. They are prepped and chopped small for you. To sling in a soup etc. I've had a disappointing veg gardening year so I am adding these to my stash. The pack, according to Sainsbury's, was put together in Belgium. Quite apart from a Hitchhiker's Guide chuckle at the word Belgium (the worst swear word in the universe according to that book) I was a bit Confused at this.

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 20:01

Access to storage jars thanks to a make do and mend dad who kept some.

Also think there are some kilner jars. Going to fetch them with mum's permission. Also anything else valuable.

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 20:07

My problem is space. It is very limited. The fridge freezer is old. There is no extra space. I have evicted a whole heap of clothing for the charity shop. But this does not free up food storage. Thus I am debating bread maker, small emergency freezer, or dehydrator. Tricky tricky.

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 20:11

Can you dehydrate aubergine?

What do reconstituted veg taste like?

How do you reconstitute dried veg?

Are they soggy like tinned veg?

That's impressive!
I can't wait to start mine. Wish I'd done it a bit earlier when we were eating zillions of fruit from the veg box scheme I use.

NoWordForFluffy · 25/08/2019 21:31

I can't even begin to imagine when I'd use dehydrated stuff. The kids hate stew etc (weirdos)!

CrowleysBentley · 25/08/2019 21:42

Dd (19 years old, working full time) has started buying things to add to the stash here. The bodyform sanitary towels that we both prefer, as they are unscented and quite soft feeling, are on offer in tesco for £1 a pack. She came home today with 20 packs in a variety of absorbancies so we will be ok for sanitary protection for the foreseeable, especially as I dobt need them very often these days. She's also started stocking up on her preferred deodorant and hair products.

I'm planning a trip to aldi on Thursday, with a list, just to buy stuff for stashing. This week we are eating mostly from the freezer so that i can refill it with things that we use most often. I've done an order from an online chinese wholesale place for big bags of spices, soy sauce, tinned beansprouts, the maggi shrimp stock that makes everything taste amazing, good noodles and a few other things that looked interesting. It's so much cheaper than supermarkets, though i miss living in London where i could get all the bigger bags of herbs and spices cheaply in the local shop. I've also ordered a 400g jar of dried mushrooms, as they are excellent for adding flavour to basic meals. It was £11, whuch beats the supermarkets £2 or £3 for 23-30 grams by a fair margin.

Bluebell9 · 26/08/2019 07:16

I've been replenishing my stash slowly for the last month every time I go shopping but I took DP to Tesco yesterday to do a big stash shop. I got all the heavy stuff so he could carry it as I'm 7 months pregnant.
I've managed to convince my sister and parents to get some supplies in too, which is great as neither had anything in March.
I live on an island so if supply chains were slow, I think we'd be at the very end of the resupply list and I know how bare the shelves get in the shops if just one ferry is cancelled due to bad weather. Toilet roll always runs out first!
I'm starting to make meals to freeze for just after the baby arrives too and getting a few bits in for Christmas in case things are still difficult to get hold of.

@BlackeyedGruesome , of those three I would say bread maker with back up old school bread maker skills. Just because it is such a crowd pleaser. It was a revelation when I got one.
As for dehydrated veg - to bung in soups etc for bulk and goodness. DH makes awesome lentil soup for example . No pretence they will be as nice as fresh chunky veg. Whizz it up or not.
The other day we needed some celery for a risotto (another DH special). Obviously we didn't need it but it adds nice flavour. I remembered I had some dehydrated so a poured a scoop out into some warmed water. While we were dicking about with other things, it reconstituted. It just turned into the thin slices I had prepped- if a bit soggy. And it went in the risotto as normal. Dh slung the water in the stock pot next to the risotto and added the stock bit by bit in the normal way.
The machine we get daily ish use out of is the bread maker. I kid myself I can make it by hand if necessary. But we haven't bought a loaf of bread since we got it - save for a recent holiday.

bellinisurge · 26/08/2019 08:04

@CrowleysBentley , great she is thinking about a bit of resilience. My dd (albeit a bit younger) has focussed her stash suggestions on chocolate, cheap chicken noodle blocks - which I got as a prepper in joke but she loves - and mad shoes for Christmas ("you can put them away for Christmas, Mum")HmmGrin

BlackeyedGruesome · 26/08/2019 10:40

Woken up with a rash.

Orangy red oval spots, about two to three mm across. Some sit flat on the skin with a rounded top, some are flat on the top with a rounded base indenting the skin.

No itch, no reddening around the area, no temperature, no feeling unwell.

Only appear on skin uncovered overnight.

Scabs appear to detach if poked and are quite hard when prodded.

Any ideas?

I suspect it is a rare sort of rash requiring a new name...

Hoooo · 26/08/2019 10:47

How many?

Where on your body?

Have you had chickenpox?

Orangecake123 · 26/08/2019 10:51

Maybe it's because of the heat?
