Brexit

Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

Yes, I've bought sun cream.

wherearemychickens · 25/08/2019 07:55

Mostly because my DD has sensitive skin and reacts to a lot of brands, so I have stocked up on the one that works.

GoneWishing · 25/08/2019 08:18

We have some spare sun cream, too. Not specifically as a Brexit risk, but I need it whenever if it's sunny and I'm out and can't totally cover up.

I'm still unwell, so not an awful lot's been done round here (but I don't have a brain tumour, so that's good!). Some bits in the weekly shop to add to my stash (more olives, coconut oil, lentils, and gin). Our local shops are all normally stocked with nothing to show signs of anyone stockpiling.

I like the idea of a Christmas box. Not quite sure what I'd put in one, though. I'm not that fussy about having any particular foods or drinks in the house for the holidays. Maybe I should think about forward purchasing some presents...

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 25/08/2019 08:33

Frozen grated cheese is fine.
For my Christmas box I’m planning a box of biscuits, crisps, fizzy apple and grape juice, custard, jelly, tinned fruit, Christmas pudding, meringues. I will be freezing meat for Christmas and New Year dinner nearer the time, some chicken and beef. Oh and some clotted cream which freezes beautifully.

Orangecake123 · 25/08/2019 09:42

Oh thanks for the idea- I hadn't thought of getting sunscreen.

I signed up for a trial box of who gives a crap yesterday so hopefully that arrives soon- but we haven't stocked up on any extra toilet roll yet.

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 09:43

Clotted cream freezes? Oh joy.

I wanted to add to the stash today but I have not found enough of the kitchen to add anything else into the mess. However, I need to put the suitcases away and I store some stuff in them. I am also washing the holiday towels to put back in.

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 09:46

When I was away, I used 4 and a bit loo rolls in two weeks. Helps to work out how much I use in what time.

Interestingly the other three used fewer between them.

NoWordForFluffy · 25/08/2019 09:50

I think we use about 4 rolls a week on average between 4 of us. More during the holidays when we're at home all day.

I've got more loo roll coming in the Ocado shop. The Groupon stash is a post-Brexit stash only!

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 25/08/2019 09:51

Black eyed, yes it freezes really well, I have been doing so at Christmas for years.

Wolfcub · 25/08/2019 09:55

I seem to have spent my week talking to people about building a stash. I am also relieved that dm will now start forward purchasing despite df’s cynicism

I’m running my freezer down over the next two weeks so I can get ready to refill it. It’s not big so it’ll be a combination of meals I make and ingredients

prettybird · 25/08/2019 10:01

Custard in cartons also freezes well. I like a mix of whipped cream and good quality vanilla custard with my Christmas pudding (probably should word that the other way round WinkBlush) I don't like brandy butter - so I should remember to get some in.

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 10:03

It suddenly seems very near now I am back from holiday. Time to get my act together.

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 10:06

So the next question is, which supermarkets sell clotted cream.

Wolfcub · 25/08/2019 10:08

Blackeyed Sainsbury’s usually sell roddas clotted cream

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 10:16
prettybird · 25/08/2019 10:19

Sainsbury's sell Rodda's but I actually prefer the Tesco own brand clotted cream. Grin

Hoooo · 25/08/2019 13:05

Aha!
I'll freeze some grated cheese too, thank you!

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 15:33

Aldi sell it as well. It is going in the freezer asap.

I am now going to try and find my kitchen and the freezer. It is buried under holiday unpacking and shopping.

Socksontheradiator · 25/08/2019 15:39

I have bought sun cream for next year, along with facial moisturiser. Just in case.
I am very happy to learn than clotted cream is freezable Smile

MarshmallowManiac · 25/08/2019 16:17

@BlackeyedGruesome You are so right, am trying to slowly, slowly build up a little pile of stuff we use quite frequently. Am also looking in lots of supermarkets, because I feel they all seem to have offers at different times. Have slowly eaten my March stockpile, but after hearing about buffoon Boris's renewed enquiries about closing parliament, I feel that it is even more imperative to have a little store of food and all the necessary products we need, before the 31st.

CrunchyCarrot · 25/08/2019 16:18

So, a couple of recent stockpiling articles:

From Wired:
www.wired.co.uk/article/brexit-food-stockpile-rationing

the Guardian:
www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/aug/24/quarter-of-uk-voters-precautions-no-deal-brexit-stockpiling-medicines-food?CMP=share_btn_tw%E2%80%AC

Seems stashing supplies is gaining momentum. Better than last minute panic-buying, definitely.

MarshmallowManiac · 25/08/2019 16:31

Oh and I had a walk round the park this morning and discovered BUSHES of scrummy Blackberries, who knows I might fancy a walk tomorrow morning too

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/08/2019 16:34

A nerve wracking end to the test match has powered the getting shopping away.

I need to clean out the fridge and freezer and start stacking it properly.

noodlenosefraggle · 25/08/2019 16:46

I thought we exported quite a lot of milk, so if anything, we'd have an excess of milk, as well as an excess of lamb and other meat we won't be able to export. The rest of the stuff I understand, but I don't know how we would be short of dairy. I buy British milk and butter all year round. The article says 10 billion litres of milk comes from RoI. How much milk do we use and how much do we export?

rosie39forever · 25/08/2019 16:53

We produce most of our own milk but not enough dairy products as we don't have the infrastructure to make enough yoghurt, butter ,cheese etc so we export milk and then import products back, there's a constant too and fro through ports. This is also the case on the island of Ireland most milk is produced in the north goes across the border to be processed and back again.
Also our biggest dairy is Arla which is Swedish/Danish owned!
