My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

New to the thread, thanks for sharing all your tips. We prepped for the Spring but have had a few tight months over the summer so some of it needs replenished. I have used reading this thread to motivate myself and spent yesterday evening checking stock levels and dates so I can spot the gaps and reorganising (a couple of shelves had slipped 😂 prepping hazard 🙈)

I'm relieved that we didn't use up as much as I had imagined. I do need to use up some short dated tins of tomatoes and bread flour though and get in more pasta, milks and baked beans.

My next task is the freezer and working out the best use of space and putting the dehydrator to use.

I have potatoes in the ground at the allotment, is it best to leave them until we need them or lift them to store?

I really need to work on making the allotment more productive for next year, I have enjoyed my fresh broad beans etc but I'm still at the stage of growing some nice tasty additions rather than a substantial contribution to the family diet.

bellinisurge · 21/08/2019 09:12

@ThirdThoughts are your tins of tomatoes really that short dated? As long as the tin has been moderately properly stored - not gone above 37C and no dints in it, I would trust it well past any Best Before Date.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/08/2019 09:15

Third as it looks to dry out a bit I'm going to try and keep my potatoes in the soil for a bit longer.

Bad luck kj re the parents. It was a good try though!

The cardboard tip is a fab one Crowleys thanks! I'm lucky I guess that it didn't roll out of the loft hatch and concuss a passing dh.

magimedi · 21/08/2019 09:27

I was in both a giant Tesco & a Sainsburys yesterday (don't ask!) and I noticed that in both of them rice, pasta, tinnned toms & tinned pulses were very low in stock.

Dontlickthetrolley · 21/08/2019 10:47

Despite saying I wouldn't get any treats yet, I'm currently stock piling salted caramel matchmakers as they're only 89p in one of our warehouse stores, I've got 6 boxes I need to hide

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/08/2019 10:57

My bastard tomato soup is quite short dated. I'm sure it's a ploy though, tins last forever.

You know that feeling, self catering holiday, optimistic plans to cook healthy meals?

Here is my accidental holiday stash. Just packing the car to bring it home.

oops!

DS harvested his own potatoes for dinner last night Smile DS is 3, he was still hungry after (3 new potatoes) and had oven pizza. We are also at the 'tasty contributions' stage...before my parents fruit/vegetable growing was just for fun but this summer they are planting basics as well.
Happily, their blueberry bushes do amazingly every year so at least we'll have anti-oxidants.

I am also starting with a stash now. I had my head in the sand before. We have a teeny kitchen and a average size flat so my first step is to find somewhere to put stuff! DH will be happy when I let him buy 10kg of rice from the Chinese supermarket without grumbling. DH is from the Philippines, he/ his parents always buy 5k/10k bags of (admittedly very tasty) rice and I always moan about finding somewhere to put them.

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/08/2019 13:29

OYBBK, that's the stuff that never made it to the cupboard. There is rice, couscous, lentils more pasta and spaghetti in the cupboard.

What a plonker!

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/08/2019 13:31

PS, how is your toe this morning and thank God you didn't brain DH with a falling tin.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/08/2019 13:47

I think I'm self sufficient in parsnips and runner / green beans from the allotment. My leeks bolted, so I don't have enough of those. Potatoes we're self sufficient as we don't eat many. Plenty of other things at tasty contributions level.

I'm hoping that I'm self sufficient in squashes by autumn too.

kjhkj · 21/08/2019 13:55

Just placed an ocado order (voucher) and shortages there of bread mix.
I'm becoming a bit bread mix obsessed

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/08/2019 15:01

My toe is a little battered, but thankfully ok Grin thanks for asking!

bellinisurge · 21/08/2019 15:12

I think leeks bolting is a common thing this year. Otherwise your garden sounds great. I had a bad gardening year this year for non- gardening reasons. But my little container grown apple trees that produced nothing last year have both come up trumps this year.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/08/2019 15:23

This is my allotment. We're taking on the next door plot too! Fingers crossed we can do about 2/3 of our veg needs soon.

I'm trying to get this on as many Brexit threads as I can. It's on the BBC website in the business section:

"A senior executive at a major food retailer has told the BBC it is considering introducing rationing.
It will prevent firms that have not made their own no-deal Brexit plan from using food retailers as wholesalers.
But he said he did not envisage that the limits would affect normal retail customers.
"One potential problem is that businesses who are struggling with their supply chains effectively use ours," he said.
"We would need to limit the amount restaurants or convenience stores, for example, that are short of stock could buy," said the executive, who spoke to the BBC on condition of anonymity.
Not the first time
"We wouldn't use the word rationing but that is effectively what it is. Limiting the volumes small businesses can purchase so that our retail customers get a chance to get what they need.""
How do you tell who is a small business owner or their employee and who is an ordinary punter?

NoWordForFluffy · 21/08/2019 20:05

I imagine they'd simply limit volumes to everyone. Then everybody plays by the same rules. Scary, isn't it?

PrettyShiningPeople · 22/08/2019 08:14

"We wouldn't use the word rationing but that is effectively what it is. Limiting the volumes small businesses can purchase so that our retail customers get a chance to get what they need.""

And usually the limits apply to a single transaction. Hopefully this would be tightened, to stop them going back to make another purchase at a different till. Or to stop multiple people from the same business making the same purchase.

It’s annoying when you see small businesses doing this already (Brexit regardless) and causing shortages for other customers.
I saw a woman a few weeks ago who bought all the basil plants and half the box of limes.

bellinisurge · 22/08/2019 08:30

@PrettyShiningPeople and they enforce this how?

kjhkj · 22/08/2019 09:02

It will be a "no more than 2 per customer" type scenario. Its rationing and there will be no way of knowing who is a business and who isn't so it will apply to all.

TBH its already happening. Ive placed a couple of orders of specific items from supermarkets in recent weeks and been limited as to the amount I can order online.

bellinisurge · 22/08/2019 09:13

Exactly @kjhkj , they would have to do it for everyone. Which is rationing.

ThirdThoughts · 22/08/2019 10:34

Good point about the tinned tomatoes probably being fine, I will be using and replacing though - I just hadn't been good about rotating the store we built up for Spring.

Our Leeks bolted too, the bees have enjoyed the big allium flowers though. 😆

I harvested some more broad beans, french beans and peas last night, and there are plenty of little runners growing too. Also got some gooseberries and blackberries, so I'll be looking up gooseberry recipes next.

I definitely am going to plan better for next year so that I'm really making the most of the allotment and garden. They really could be more productive.

singswithitsfingers · 22/08/2019 11:35

Tesco have an offer on frozen fruit at the moment if you’re stocking your freezer. I think the potential lack of fresh fruit is one of the things I’m most concerned about.

bellinisurge · 22/08/2019 11:37

That's why I dehydrate stuff Grin. Much to the amusement of many. Limes for No Deal Ginanyone?
