Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

Could you consider cloth ones? I know they are expensive, but you wouldn't then run out.

mamapants · 20/08/2019 10:15

socks pretty sure that's the reason. If they kept in the dark they have a better chance of being OK than in the sunlight.

mamapants · 20/08/2019 10:18

socks I have considered it before, ones for older children are specially made and cost about £30 each so would be too much money for a set in one go. Plus he has explosive poo issues I'm not sure it would work well/at all at school.

Socksontheradiator · 20/08/2019 10:28

Oh, that's quite a predicament, mamapants! And so expensive! It was only a thought.
Thanks for thoughts regarding the water bottles. I'll keep them but not for drinking.

kjhkj · 20/08/2019 10:30

I have some out of date water in bottles. I guess the danger is in breakdown of plastic polluting the water. Thoughts, anyone?

If its really really old then just before B day use it to water the plants and replace using tap water. Most of the time though the issue is that it just tastes a bit stale. A good shake will reoxygenate it and it will taste fine again.

Re. water - I keep bottles in the house after a couple of water issues we've had over the years (burst pipe on the coldest day of winter, when everyone else in the area also apparently had burst pipes; and some issues with infastructure that took ages to fix at another point). I haven't been throwing away water that's expired - since we don't have a problem with storage space. I would use it up for something and replace if I only had limited space. As it is, I'm keeping it for various non-consumption uses in the case of problems with water. I do also have some water purification tablets, but those were just bought in a general prepper urge, rather than me expecting needing them any time soon.

I have finally finished cleaning and cataloguing the pantry! Shopping list written for whatever needs replacing in there. Next to battle the plastic storage box of toiletries and the extended first aid box.

I've just been sorting out my left over from last year logs, so that I've got space for this years delivery. I've ordered plenty, which might mean that next year I don't need to order any, but I'd be kicking myself if we didn't have enough. even though my garden now looks like a lumberyard Do you think friends will notice if I stick some flower pots on top of them? Grin

bellinisurge · 20/08/2019 16:10

Out of interest, @OhYouBadBadKitten , how much have you ordered?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2019 18:02

2.5 cubic metres. Last year we got through about 2 cubic meters but it was quite a mild winter for a good part of it. (some of that came out of the previous years load). I think we will end up with 3.5m^3 altogether.

It's for one wood burner that heats up the whole of our small downstairs.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2019 18:04

That's loose delivered, not stacked btw. so about 2m^3 stacked.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2019 18:40

Oh yes, in case anyone else is an optimistic stacker. Heinz tomato soup tins do not stack. Sadly I have a very swollen and visibly dented toe as a result of learning this lesson.

bellinisurge · 20/08/2019 19:08

Cheers @OhYouBadBadKitten . Sorry about your toe.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/08/2019 19:10

Thank you for taking one for the team, OYBBK!

I hope it heals quickly. GinFlowers

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2019 19:11

Gin what a splendid idea!

CrunchyCarrot · 20/08/2019 19:17

Gin Have another one OYBBK. Smile I hate unstackable tins!!

Well my exercise in imagining I'm eating from my stash this week has revealed I need twice as many tinned veg as I currently have. Sigh. Still better to find that out now!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2019 19:30

I'm going to go and attempt to stack more tins if it means I can get stuck into the Gin

Do you want some tomato soup Crunchy or some sweetcorn. It's been breeding since it was hidden.

mamapants · 20/08/2019 19:31

What tinned veg have you tried crunchy?
So far I have sweetcorn, baked beans, all kinds of beans, chickpeas. Which are all things I use anyway. Wondering what else is good? Someone said mushrooms I think. I've got some dried but was maybe going to try tinned too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2019 19:45

I'm relying mostly on tinned tomatoes with various things like chickpeas to add. Plus frozen veg.

I will get on with drying some more mushrooms. They worked astonishingly well.

Socksontheradiator · 20/08/2019 19:53

The tescos tinned mushrooms I have are quite soggy. I think they would do in an emergency but never out of choice. Had them in a curry and that was OK. Less lovely in a chicken and vegetable soup - I found that I could taste the difference in the whole soup.
Have learnt that the way to treat tinned veg is to stir fry with lots of spicy things. They do not do well just heated up and dumped onto a plate IMHO.
If I use them again I will probably drain them and dry on kitchen towel before using to see if that helps. @ohyoubadkitten ouchie poor toe!

Wolfcub · 20/08/2019 21:02

Try frozen mushrooms rather than tinned

I also hate unstackable tins. It was a real bugbear when I was sorting out my stash last week

Cackleweb · 20/08/2019 21:40

Just rearranged the pantry.

For some reason I have 14 tins of processed peas. I even used one today. Am currently wondering why I have so many.

Bad news - I've only got 4 tins of baked beans. This is officially a crisis.

CrowleysBentley · 20/08/2019 22:16

For unstackable tins, put a piece of cardboard between the layers. They stay stacked then!

BlackeyedGruesome · 20/08/2019 22:58

I put the unstackable ones on the bottom layer and the stackable ones on top. Annoying that one can not stack in neat rows but not as dangerous for delicate toes.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/08/2019 23:06

We aren't stacking as our bed isn't that high. Seems the safest way!

kjhkj · 21/08/2019 07:24

I'm low on bread mix. And Ive seen on another forum that Aldi has discontinued my go to crusty white mix which is really annoying since it was half the price of other mixes.

Flour is a priority for me this week given the wheat problems.
I committed the ultimate crime yesterday and showed my DParents my stash just to try to shock them into action. It didn't work and I think they now just think I'm completely bonkers.
