Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

I’ve been buying extra tins and dried stuff with each shop for a while now but definitely need to concentrate on batteries, torches, first aid etc. I’m also concerned for my lovely elderly frail neighbours so I have considered them too.

I’m also focusing on nutritionally dense food now like peanut butter, tinned mackerel, nuts etc that don’t rely on fuel. Any other suggestions? We’re pescatarian but no allergies. DH totally has his head in the sand and although he’s lovely he’s not much help and thinks I’m a bit of a drama llama Hmm.

Fuck this fucking mess.

mamapants · 18/08/2019 20:58

How much UHT milk are people getting in?
And are people buying condensed/evaporated milk?
Any other alternatives?

NationMcKinley · 18/08/2019 21:13

I’ve bought a big tin of dried milk as I loathe UHT. Tbh we don’t drink a ton of milk so I figured it would be a sensible option as we can reconstitute it as we need it. Am also going to buy a lot of multi vitamins plus extra vitamin c. Don’t know how effective they’ll be but they’ll make me feel better!

thenightsky · 18/08/2019 21:19

What's the use by date on your dried milk Nation? Thinking that might be a better option than UHT cartons.

Hoooo · 18/08/2019 21:35

Any advice on my canned goods bellini?

Tins seem fine...

bellinisurge · 18/08/2019 21:41

@Hoooo , I'd still be prepared to use them. Although I think the limit is 37 degrees C. 100 F in old money. Sorry i missed your earlier question.

Hoooo · 18/08/2019 21:58

Cans themselves look fine...think we will start using them and replace...

Iwannasnack · 18/08/2019 22:27

Thanks for the water advice. I’ll get a few bottles when I next do an Aldi shop. Vaguely remembered people on a previous thread having unopened bleach for something but can’t remember what!
Hadn’t really thought about batteries, torches, etc. That’s a good shout.

Hello, I am just getting started with prepping a bit. Finances and circumstances just haven't allowed until now. I always try to have pretty well stocked store cupboards anyway, I could feed us for probably 3 weeks from those and what's in the freezer, though we might end up eating some odd combinations of food. I have managed to get a few weeks worth of my painkillers and other meds put away by ordering a few days or a week early each time since early this year. I can't do that any more though because they've put them onto a regular repeat so I can only get them when I'm due to run out.

This week I've started expanding that a bit by refilling the first aid box, stocking up on over the counter medication, and doubling up on all the cleaning products that I use. I also now have 6 weeks worth of cat litter and cat food in, and I have bought 5 x 24 pack of loo rolls. Son picked up 2 catering size 500g tins of Azera coffee to add to the stash, as all 3 of us (me DS who is 20 and DD who is 19) are coffee addicts, so we should at least be good for caffeine for a while!

I'm going to just keep building on what I've got while I can.

Welcome Crowleys (and love your username!) Smile

And hello to angry incoherent person Grin

AutumnCrow · 18/08/2019 23:04

Lidl has UHT milk BB Feb 2020. Also some canned goods BB 2022 and even 2023.

chockaholic72 · 18/08/2019 23:58

In case people are struggling with storage space for non-foods stuff, Sainsbury's do x40 bleach tablets in a tub for two quid - they are great and come in a small tub.

Re water - not dead cheap, but I bought a Water to Go filter bottle when I went to Nepal. I've since used it drinking from streams in the Lakes and the Peaks too, and not a dickie of a dickie tummy, plus the water tastes fine - water purification tablets and drops taste a bit funny.

kjhkj · 19/08/2019 08:15

The only tins Ive ever had go bad in heat have been dairy based. So storing evaporated milk in the garage where the furnace is located proved to be a bad plan...

bellinisurge · 19/08/2019 08:24

@FuckFacePlatapus - ever walked out of your house and run away posting the keys back through the letterbox as you go? That is No Deal . We've never done that. I'm old. I remember life before the EU.

mamapants · 19/08/2019 09:34

OK so think I'm going to go for a small amount of UHT milk and some powdered milk.
Am now wondering about meat products-- any recommendations of dried/cured or tinned? Do things like haggis or black pudding have a long shelf life? Going to have some in freezer as well. We had one of those big serrano hams from lidl one year but it was a bit of a pain on the counter for weeks but wandering about getting one again.

prettybird · 19/08/2019 09:41

If you slice black pudding and freeze it, you can cook it straight from frozen.

I do that when I can get hold of Stornoway black pudding Smile

kjhkj · 19/08/2019 09:44

the lidl UHT milk isn't great IMO. Mine refused to use it on cereal (although obviously if that's all there was they would use it). The Moo one went down ok though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/08/2019 10:26

We use sainsbury's (full fat) UHT milk anyway for making yogurt, so it does get used up. We tried some that was getting a month out of date on our cereal a week ago. It was absolutely fine.

GoneWishing · 19/08/2019 12:51

I've been distracted by ill health, again. Having some trouble getting a hold of a prescription again. It's just because of my GP, nothing to do with supplies, but it's scary and worrying and frustrating, and I can't imagine how much worse it would be if you were trying to sort it out in a pharmacy filled with other scared and frustrated people also trying to sort out theirs.

Anyway. I've bought in more veggie protein products: more beans on the shelves and quorn and soy protein stuff in the freezer (I'm way too keen on several Fry's products). Eating my way through some expiring stuff I've discovered while tidying the shelves.

For anyone who likes rye bread: the pumpernickel-style stuff tends to last long. I just restocked in Aldi, as I finished the last of what I'd bought in the spring, and my new batch is use by 02/2020.

Hoooo · 19/08/2019 12:56

No hrt for me and no inhalers for mh ds1.

Good times!

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/08/2019 13:49

For those just starting out, I would get everything you need for a week to start, then increase that, rather than getting a month's worth of a couple of products and nothing of something else. Everything being cleaning, washing, hygiene, food meds etc.

I found it more reassuring to have a little of everything in.

Then think about your must haves. Someone mentioned coffee. Stock up a little more on those and on the core essentials. ( Eg one can manage without shampoo by combing everyday, but maybe not without soap to wash hands or adequate food or meds)

Think about work arounds for different scenarios. What if we could not get fresh milk for example? Or the electric went off? Or whatever.

When I get home, I am stocking up on phone cases for not so small any more autistic boys.

SpoooyGhost · 19/08/2019 14:07

Homebargains has cystitis stuff. Obviously not anti biotics but eases the symptoms. 6 sachets for 59p. I've added two packets to my first aid box.

Hoooo · 19/08/2019 15:50

I got some meds today from the pharmacy for my stash (pain killers as I get migraines) and they had bars of soap 4 x £1
Things like thst are easy to stock up on.
Also don't forget things like foil amd greaseproof paper!

AutumnCrow · 19/08/2019 16:06

@Hoooo I am getting HRT patches from the White Pharmacy online (it's based in Hampshire); they just confirmed my order is dispatched. Three months for £37.95. That's my buffer and it's a big relief.
