Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

I also know where the nearest streams are but, so does everyone else who lives here and I wouldn't trust that water without filtering and purification.

BlackeyedGruesome · 18/08/2019 17:56

We have still water.17p for two litres from Aldi. I keep a few under the kitchen cabinets. At 17p does not matter if they go out of date.

Also have some sparkling water, fruit juice and water purification tablets.

Socksontheradiator · 18/08/2019 18:23

I have stashed a few bottles of water. I also bought a life straw, and have taken on Bellinisurge's advice about filtering rainwater through an old T shirt the bringing to the boil and then keeping it on a rolling boil for 5mins (happy to be corrected but that's what I think I remember)
We have a water butt in the garden, which needs a new lid. Might give it and the feeder pipe a good clean this week.

bellinisurge · 18/08/2019 18:26

@Socksontheradiator it's actually only a minute as long as you start timing once you have a hard rolling boil. Smile

MunchMunch · 18/08/2019 18:38

Can I ask how long people are prepping for? (as in how many weeks/months worth of supplies)

mamapants · 18/08/2019 18:53

I've just started prepping last week was originally aiming for two weeks but now thinking a month maybe.
Be interested in what others are doing.
It's easier to stock up on some things than others.

Socksontheradiator · 18/08/2019 18:53

Ah thank you! That's good - less chance of boiling it dry which would defeat the object 😅
Out of interest and in a general prepper way, what happens to loos in the event of no water? Its not as simple as chucking water in, is it?
We are so used to everything just working....

mamapants · 18/08/2019 18:55

Yes a bucket of water would flush a toilet.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2019 18:55

I'm aiming to try and muddle through til just after Christmas. I certainly don't expect to have two months worth of food by any means (and there will be food of course, just some things may be tricky) but for things like medicines and pet food, that's what I've gone for. Plus plenty of frozen and tinned veggies.

I have bought my ingredients for a Christmas cake. That's already bagged up separately. So no matter what happens we won't be without cake.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2019 18:56

You put the water in the pan, you don't need to put it in the cistern.

mamapants · 18/08/2019 18:59

I was thinking that kitten doing my Xmas pudding early and I don't always do a cake but thought I would ths year incase there isn't much treats around.

Socksontheradiator · 18/08/2019 19:00

@munchmunch, my stash would last DH and myself probably 3 months on reduced and slightly dull rations. Longer if things went seriously tits up as we'd be careful.
But, we have adult children nearby who have stashed a little to humour us, but nowhere near what we have.
So I can see us pooling our resources. And so, I continue to add to our pile, and include things that they will roll their eyes at like thrush cream and sanpro (mostly reusable) and anusol and antihistamines. You get the picture. One a mother, always a mother.
So how long my stash will last is debatable Blush

mamapants · 18/08/2019 19:00

Was also thinking of doing my sausagemeat stuffing early if possible as it freezes really well and wouldn't be Xmas without it.

SpoooyGhost · 18/08/2019 19:06

I've got my pigs in blankets and turkey. I need those on the big day if nothing else.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/08/2019 19:10

Good idea re the stuffing and pigs in blankets. I'll wait for a bit though.

The next couple of weeks mission is to eat up all the odd things that have collected in the freezer.

darkcloudsandsunnyskies · 18/08/2019 19:11

You only need to prep for a month. After that everybody else will be dead.

Yes Im.thinking high calorie treat items may be the order of the day. I had loads of 100g bars of chocolate stashed for March, but they've been eaten since! I always do a Christmas cake. I normally do it during half term and feed it until christmas, but I'm wondering if things like black treacle and dried fruit will run out before then. It's almost impossible to get black treacle anyway.

noodlenosefraggle · 18/08/2019 19:15

darkcloudandsunnyskies I wasn't thinking everyone would bevdead, but that after 2 weeks, we'd be on our knees and the EU would just give us the original, unchanged WA and nobody would care, we'd just sign it.

MunchMunch · 18/08/2019 19:17

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll prep for about a month. Mainly things like toilet roll, medicine, san pro, cat/dog food and some tins/jars and probably pasta. I can't go overboard as I just don't have the room but I certainly don't want to run out of the basics listed above. We can always eat loads of pasta based meals for a while as boring as that would become!

Socksontheradiator · 18/08/2019 19:18

We eat tasty treats so stashing has proved impossible!
Re loos, I was thinking of what happens beyond the actual toilet and how that would work. Not a brexit thing, just curiosity in long term water situation. I shall Google it Smile

NoWordForFluffy · 18/08/2019 19:25

@noodlenosefraggle, I have half a tin of black treacle, best before some time in 2012 in the cupboard. It looks fine!

bellinisurge · 18/08/2019 19:33

@Socksontheradiator , google Christchurch earthquake and composting toilets.

mamapants · 18/08/2019 19:35

socks I imagine it would take a while to become a problem.
We have cess pit anyway so fine until it needs emptying.

AutumnCrow · 18/08/2019 19:57

I could survive on what I have for months on my own but I have adult DC too, one of whom will be in their final year at university. That's pretty worrying.

Oh and the search for HRT continues.

noodlenosefraggle · 18/08/2019 20:42

nowordforfluffy I used up my out of date tin of black treacle last year because the tin was going rusty Grin
