Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

I'm saving treat food until the last minute, else we'll eat it! So good on you with the willpower, @Bercows 😂

The voucher which Waitrose emailed, was there a minimum spend on it? Has anyone else had a steadily increasing spend to get the discount? Always 20% off, but have to buy more each time!

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 08/08/2019 18:07

Food shop put in for normal weekly stuff but including lots of pasta, extra cleaning stuff, extra paracetamol, tinned pulses and loo roll

prettybird · 08/08/2019 18:19

I find if I stop shopping at Tesco/Sainsbury's because I'm shopping at t'other one (because of the vouchers Wink), the value of the discount booklets I get sent goes up! Grin

So because I'm currently shopping at Sainsbury's, I should be due some good Tesco vouchers Wink

NoWordForFluffy · 08/08/2019 18:25

I do that too, pretty! 😁

My Tesco ones aren't great this time. Maybe next!

Whatthefoxgoingon · 08/08/2019 19:26

My camel has run away and I have to find the bugger again Grin

Must get back to the stock taking. Stores running low.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/08/2019 21:12

Well, we just rearranged the chest freezer. There is no shortage of fish fingers, fish steaks and diced beef in our house! We also have loads of Swedish Glacé since yesterday as Booths has it on a cracking offer (£1.50 a tub).

Plus a tonne of homegrown veg. I think we need a new freezer for all the veg!

NoWordForFluffy · 09/08/2019 09:03

I've just ordered loo roll from Groupon which was a good deal. Should keep us going for about 6 months.

Gingerninja4 · 09/08/2019 10:22

Crash lands on the bog roll pile .
Have rejoined after long break but had to change name etc

I have been prepping for a while with worrying about Brexit on top of a universal credit move at some point .

Have sorted out most of My dry/tinned goods few gaps but am filling them slowly but need some idea /recommendations for tinned meat /protein options please

BlackeyedGruesome · 09/08/2019 11:52

Tinned kidney beans. Value ones are perfectly fine, use them ourselves. Team with wholemeal pasta or brown rice and you are sorted.

Slightly more expensive: Aldi butter beans, chickpeas.

Baked beans with wholemeal bread.

Nuts and seeds. Aldi is quite cheap comparatively. Asda do cheap sesame in world food.

Red lentils are the quickest to cook. 20-30 minutes. Very cheap to buy, loose a bit on cooking though in cost. You can batch cook and freeze dried beans. So 50 minutes of fuel but up to 20 portions depending on the size of your pan. Defrost and Chuck in soups.

BlackeyedGruesome · 09/08/2019 11:53

Dried chick peas. Soak, blend and fry in falafal recipe.

Gingerninja4 · 09/08/2019 13:37

Thank you

Me ,ds2 and Dd will eat and do have chickpeas, lentils in my stash

Any suggestions for meat tinnef etc for picky ds 1 no dn just akward and even more picky ds 3 .who has sn

Socksontheradiator · 09/08/2019 13:51

We have tinned hotdogs. Also tinned beef stew which isn't very nice on it's own but worked well with onions, carrots, parsnip, celery etc to make a casserole. I drain off the gravy.

daisypond · 09/08/2019 13:57

I don’t have a freezer, apart from a small one that’s part of the fridge. I’m wondering about getting one. Are they really worth it, apart from in these troubling times? Just debating whether to fork out for one and where to put it.

Socksontheradiator · 09/08/2019 14:27

@daisypond I use mine all the time (two of us here) I quite often freeze leftovers, so it's economical in that way. There are always packs of frozen veg in mine (recently discovered chopped frozen onion which can be a godsend in lazy moments) also meat that is approaching use by date gets chucked in, or cooked then chucked in. I often make big pots of soup and freeze it in portions as DH and I both take flasks to work.
We have just ordered a 2nd one as dog eats raw meat and that comes frozen. So will have 2 both with 88co capacity (4 shelves)
I think a new one will pay for itself fairly quickly.
Oh also, bread freezes really well, and if I make cake it gets sliced and frozen so we don't eat it all at once Blush

Socksontheradiator · 09/08/2019 14:35

Also, @Gingerninja4 I highly recommend 'Tin Can Cook' by Jack Monroe for useful recipes. Most have been tried and approved by her son apparently. I think he's about 9.

Hoooo · 09/08/2019 16:09

Stash now on an excel spreadsheet...looks impressive, but a few things had gone ood.
So now I have a list of stuff we need to replace and buy.
I cannot believe I feel I have to do this :(

Socksontheradiator · 09/08/2019 16:14

I'm still struggling to understand why we are still being told not to stockpile, despite so many experts warning of low supermarket stocks.
K

NoWordForFluffy · 09/08/2019 16:15

Because to tell people to stockpile would prove 'Project Fear' right and could scare some people into not supporting them now. It's lying by omission.

Socksontheradiator · 09/08/2019 16:18

Yes I imagine you are right.

CrunchyCarrot · 09/08/2019 18:38

Well - large power outages going on across the country. Not here but I've got my wind up radio and torch at the ready! It's occasions like this that I feel glad I have a stash.

I hope if you are currently without power you'll be ok and aren't stranded anywhere.

National Grid has had issues with two power generators, they say.

NoWordForFluffy · 09/08/2019 19:01

There's power issues in Liverpool. My train was still running but the Wirral service was buggered. Luckily they have the ferry (cross the Mersey 🎶).

Hoooo · 10/08/2019 09:49

Just a reminder to order/buy new/spare charger cables etc

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 10/08/2019 10:55

Stash reorganised and rotated. Popped some things I think are missing into my online shopping basket - oddly I was short of kidney beans. Lots of other beans though
Found weevils in the baking cupboard Envy(not envy) so have dealt with those.

Socksontheradiator · 10/08/2019 12:27

Bought me a new head torch. My old one is a bit shaky. It makes a fab lamp using Bellinisurge's milk bottle idea (wrap it round plastic milk bottle with torch facing inwards) It's in my prepper drawer with wind up radio and water purifier stuff.
Need to have a little sort out of leads and chargers. Good reminder @Hoooo
I quite like feeling prepared for emergencies.

bellinisurge · 10/08/2019 12:42

Don't forget to fill that milk carton with water- weighs it down nicely and helps diffuse the light even better.
