Hell is ever closer-how's your stash looking?

My brexit cupboard shelves have been depleted due to using up the things that were going out of date like long life milk and juice. We also seem to have raided the baked beans Blush
After today's announcement of buffoon johnson (isn't Johnson an American term for penis?) being our new PM and his threat of brexit on Halloween come hell or high water I figured I should assess my supplies. I still have my original lists somewhere so need to check everything.
Anyone else extra worried now and assessing their supplies?

Found weevils in the baking cupboard

Ugghh. I did a bit of research on the topic of weevils and thought it might benefit others to link it here. I've decided to try to 'weevil proof' my stash as right now it's certainly not!

Has anyone bought any Textured Vegetable Protein (tvp)?

My DSister was a vegetarian in the 80s, when vegetarian food wasn't so easy to come by and I remember eating cottage pie and curries made with tvp.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/08/2019 16:53

Almost forgot to add, according to DH one thing we don't need to stockpile is Tinsel as it's all made in a factory in Wales. Just a shame we can't eat the tinsel...

NoWordForFluffy · 10/08/2019 17:04

We got the stash out to clean today. I have a supermarket under the bed! 🙈😂

But that's fine! I'll have to check out the camping stove gas levels at some point.

My dried goods cupboards are cleaned and sorted and I've got a load more Christmas baking ingredients on the way too.

I'll probably buy loads of eggs on Oct 30 / 31 and see how long they last. I'll freeze some for Christmas baking, but I'm not that sold on frozen eggs!

I'll do a snack shop on Oct pay day too. Got to have treats!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/08/2019 18:23

Buying eggs is a good point. Think i’ll add that to the diary. We’ve already got a reminder in to fill up our cars.

bellinisurge · 10/08/2019 18:43

I have tvp @JiltedJohnsJulie

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/08/2019 18:50

Can I ask if you’ve tried it yet bellini and where you bought it from? The last time I bought it was probably about 1986 along with sosmix and Beanfeast Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 10/08/2019 18:52

I do actually know somebody with hens, so would possibly be OK, but best not to rely on them!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/08/2019 19:53

NoWord do the hens lay in the winter? I always thought they stopped for a few months?

NoWordForFluffy · 10/08/2019 20:04

I've no idea! You'd think some must else surely we'd run out of eggs?!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/08/2019 20:26

NoWord I think the chicken keepers have to introduce additional lighting to keep the hens laying over the winter.

SpoooyGhost · 10/08/2019 21:00

Major decision time. Opinions welcome. I've followed you all for months. Started with 3 days worth and now I could manage for 8 weeks no sweat. Huge respect for you all.

I have a third freezer coming. I've always had two, one for meat and veg, one for batch cooking.

I'm torn as to whether the third should be more meat and veg, maybe a few loaves. Or should it be cake, Christmas dinner, ice creams, chips and nuggets - basically a freezer to ensure Christmas and Birthdays are lovely.

Our dry cupboard is healthy, there's butter and cheese in the first freezer which is a habit I'll now never change.

We usually eat home cooked meals from scratch. But a freezer full of junk looks tempting if it's going to be doom and gloom. I have a big family.

I keep drinking my wine - never manage to stockpile it. Hence being very wordy tonight.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/08/2019 21:09

I’m not freezing bread, but that’s just me. I know I can knock out a quick loaf and freezer space is limited. Brown freezer food does sound tempting though.

NoWordForFluffy · 10/08/2019 21:18

Junk all the way. Buy flour and yeast!

prettybird · 10/08/2019 21:42

We really need to get the two cats out of the freezer in the garage don't ask Blush so that I can use it for stockpiling Shock

NoWordForFluffy · 10/08/2019 21:47

That's the most interesting thing I've read on here, Pretty! 🤔🤔🤔

bellinisurge · 10/08/2019 21:55

@SpoooyGhost , although I kid myself I could make bread the old fashioned way, my live has been vastly improved by a bread maker as recommended on here. Obviously it's an investment but my Panasonic has already paid for itself and provided me with yummy fresh bread as and when.

SpoooyGhost · 10/08/2019 22:08

I can't afford a breadmaker and mine come out like bricks. I can make chapatis which we would use day to day. The loaves would be for my peanut butter on toast, one slice a day, 3 loaves would last me a while.

I wouldn't be eating chips, nuggets, cakes etc but I love a slice of toast with peanut butter on, start every day with that.

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 11/08/2019 10:50

Spooey have a look at the Richard Bertinet kneading and shaping videos on you tube. It might help your bricks.

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 11/08/2019 12:47

I’m re-reading Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall’s ministry of food, it seemed appropriate and I shall add more suet to my shopping basket as a result

Dontlickthetrolley · 11/08/2019 16:08

I've startes Christmas present shopping today!

CrunchyCarrot · 11/08/2019 16:29

Having freezer space is great, but don't forget they rely on a power supply, so they're only of use if we have a reasonably steady power supply. I seriously hope there are no major outages that are long enough to ruin freezer stocks. I view my freezer stock as my supplementary 'nice to have' store but I put the emphasis on tinned/dried foods.

How does one freeze eggs, btw? Not in their shells, I presume!

SpoooyGhost · 11/08/2019 16:36

Break eggs, poke yolk with fork, into a plastic bag and then into fridge.

Great for cakes.

I agree with you @CrunchyCarrot, my dry store is my main. I think this freezer should be dedicated to "nice to have". I'm going to hoof a turkey in there, loads of treats and junk food.

I'll check the vids out @Wolfcubisthefemalenominal, suet is a cupboard must have, suet dumplings and puddings mmmmmm.

CrunchyCarrot · 11/08/2019 17:03

Break eggs, poke yolk with fork, into a plastic bag and then into fridge.

Ahh that makes sense! Smile I might try and see how they go.

SpoooyGhost · 11/08/2019 17:24

I found it works fine for cakes, haven't tried it for stuff like scrambled eggs.
