£125K is peanuts to Jeremy Hunt. Heavens, he even forgot about that trifling luxury flats purchase he was supposed to declare.

Peregrina · 20/06/2019 21:49

Could a prorogation be stopped being as it would be being done for total political expediency?

yolofish · 20/06/2019 21:50

I dont think BJ wants the job - or rather he doesnt want the current poisoned chalice. So I would not be at all surprised if he doesnt do something to put the cat among the pigeons in the next day or so, and can then withdraw in 'fine order'.

Up shit creek without a paddle?? bodes well for all our futures.

Peregrina · 20/06/2019 21:52

Where are our "that's democracy, what don't you understand" Leavers now? You would think they would have something to say about a Prime Minister acting like a 17th Century King.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/06/2019 22:00

Doesn't proroguing parliament involve the Queen somehow? She won't get involved. And if he shuts parliament then Rory has already said they'll meet up across the road. And then we'll go full 1640s, the secret parliament will send the police to arrest Boris for circumventing democracy and he will refuse to acknowledge the authority of the court because he's king PM don'tchyaknow. They will give him every opportunity to have a fair trial, he;ll bluster, speak in Latin and refuse to take part and then they will remove his British citizenship and send him packing to America (if they can remove dual citizenship from terrorists ...).

I jest ... but at this juncture, I don't think I would even raise a weary eyebrow if it happened. Of course it fucking did. Everything's fucking nuts.

SecretToryMole · 20/06/2019 22:02

Megan, I am certainly no fan of Corbyn (I'm a business owner and a vote for his Labour would be a suicide mission). Like many I find myself politically homeless and aghast at the state of our politics. I'd personally benefit from BoJo's insane tax plans but I'm disgusted at the thought of even more austerity just to give a tax break to the (only) people likely to vote for him.

However I'd (and will!) join the Labour Party to try and vote for an actual opposition leader who might hold the government to account from time to time Hmm

If you want to be truly depressed about the state of the UK, read the comments section of the daily Fail. The frightening thing is they might be your neighbours or even relatives.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/06/2019 22:05

Which leads me to wonder - if Boris were to prorogue parliament in order to force no deal, and the (none bat shit) members of parliament then met up elsewhere - and they contacted the EU to ask for an extension/ revoke/just anything that might possibly help - what would the EU do?
Would they recognise Boris as prime minister and parliament as having gone rogue? or would they recognise a democratically elected parliament and make it their policy that Boris had gone rogue? Would they agree to help the parliament or reply that they could only deal with Boris?

derxa · 20/06/2019 22:11

I apologise for a rant I posted on another thread but anyway...
I was showing at the Royal Highland Show today (farming event) Chatting to a very sensible colleague. A very solid Remainer... but
We wanted remain but that ship has sailed. The distaste for Johnson was clear but we have to sort this issue. We're in limbo. i'm guessing most of you aren't in business.

Peregrina · 20/06/2019 22:13

What if the pair of them independently decided to pull out? Would Gove get the job as the last man to be eliminated?

Peregrina · 20/06/2019 22:14

How does leaving with no deal sort the issue?

1tisILeClerc · 20/06/2019 22:19

Interesting line of thought Icantreach.

In the meantime, a little music.

yolofish · 20/06/2019 22:23

peregrina - that's an interesting proposition!

I honestly dont know, I think we are getting nearer and nearer to a GE - with none of the parties apart from the LibDems having a clear focus. Is that a good thing?

Peregrina · 20/06/2019 22:26

Yes, I think a GE is on the cards too.

derxa · 20/06/2019 22:38

How does leaving with no deal sort the issue? Who said it had it to be 'no deal'?

Belindabelle · 20/06/2019 22:41

I think Johnstone is really going to to struggle. 20 hour days, protocol to follow, back to back meetings. He won’t know what has hit him.

ElenadeClermont · 20/06/2019 22:43

Is anyone else watching Raab on Newsnight? He is smiling. What has Johnson promised him?! Or is John Crace right about him?

WATCH: Conservative MP Mark Field shoves a protestor against a pillar then grabs her by her neck and shoves her out of the Mansion House dinner after climate change protestors interrupted the banquet.

I'm speachless

BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2019 22:45

Prorogation: "Rory has already said they'll meet up across the road"

They'd have to take the mace with them for that to work - although Bercow would probably help by bringing that himself.

The Queen would try to stay out of it, but I'm not sure if she has the power to refuse a PM who is determined to have his prorogation.
Hopefully, she would delay, saying she needed legal & constitutional clarification

It would be a constitutional nightmare and unclear who was in charge, but better than just accepting prorogation

To stop No Deal, the (moved) HoC would still have to vote NC and bring down the govt,
but in those circumstances, there should be enough MPs who'd vote for that.

Peregrina · 20/06/2019 22:45

Who said it had it to be 'no deal'?

That was me being pessimistic, with Johnson at the helm and steering straight for the rocks, or the icebergs. "Oh sorry, chaps, they just jumped out at me - don't worry only holed below the waterline, OK up on deck."

May will look like a paragon of virtue compared to Johnson.

Peregrina · 20/06/2019 22:48

Abingdon could help you there. The town lends its mace, which I believe is exactly the same as the HoC one, when the HoC one goes in for refurbishment, which happens from time to time.

TatianaLarina · 20/06/2019 22:51

Field was a lawyer no?

InterchangeableEmma · 20/06/2019 22:52

Yes, or a solicitor. I forget

ElenadeClermont · 20/06/2019 22:52

That scene with Field is shocking.

derxa · 20/06/2019 22:53

May will look like a paragon of virtue compared to Johnson. I agree. They should just have just have voted for her bloody deal. However I don't think that Boris will carry through no deal.
