Westminstenders: Has Boris been outmanoeuvred? Reprise

In the beginning there was this thread:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eu_referendum_2016_/2670552-Has-Boris-been-outmanoeuvred?pg=1

And it said:
If Boris Johnson looked downbeat yesterday, that is because he realises that he has lost.

Perhaps many Brexiters do not realise it yet, but they have actually lost, and it is all down to one man: David Cameron.

With one fell swoop yesterday at 9:15 am, Cameron effectively annulled the referendum result, and simultaneously destroyed the political careers of Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and leading Brexiters who cost him so much anguish, not to mention his premiership.

And

If he runs for leadership of the party, and then fails to follow through on triggering Article 50, then he is finished. If he does not run and effectively abandons the field, then he is finished. If he runs, wins and pulls the UK out of the EU, then it will all be over - Scotland will break away, there will be upheaval in Ireland, a recession ... broken trade agreements. Then he is also finished. Boris Johnson knows all of this. When he acts like the dumb blond it is just that: an act.

The Brexit leaders now have a result that they cannot use. For them, leadership of the Tory party has become a poison chalice.

So what of where we stand and the poison chalice of the Tory Leadership and a deal.

According to a poll of Tory Members, Johnson is by far their runaway favourite to become next leader. And he's given a 61% competence score - higher than any other candidate.

With Raab as their second favourite.

May has successfully managed to make such a mess of how she handled the 2016 Tory Party Conference and everything that subsequently stemmed from that, that the poison chalice of leadership will be passed and sooner than many would have wanted.

However blame for what follows can be laid at her feet. At the Labour Party’s feet for ending talks that were never going anyway. At the EU. And No Deal has been detoxified by May's handling amongst many supporters of Brexit. Johnson and Raab will therefore have no interest in striking a deal with the EU and instead set sail for exit on 31st Oct and will brazen it out.

What is scary is that waiting in the wings is Farage, who without winning a single seat in the HoC has more power than any MP. They are all so afraid of him. Thus we face a very hard push to the right, with the left and centre in disarray and disorganisation.

The Human Rights Act and Devolution settlements will be top of the list to go.

And we will face draconian ways to control the population as the lazy fools will want no accountability to the press or the courts.

How long before appointed or elected judges?

Was Boris outmanoeuvred?

By the look of it, absolutely not. He just had to wait a few years. But his path and power will not be lead by him... But by those who pull his strings.

It looks bleak. Very bleak.

Many may rue the day they didn't vote for May's deal yet...

... And fear of this nightmare vision of the future is the only card May has left in her hand to play. Will anyone realise this?

Probably not, because they will all still think Johnson's leadership bid will be blocked by moderates. The trouble is he's polling well and the cowards are too busy looking over their shoulders at the turquoise arrows.

Pray for a shock result next week which brings fewer Brexit Party seats than are anticipated. The trouble is they have the momentum right now and Remainers don't know their arses from their elbows much less be passion and inspiring to the young and to women.

We are fucked.

@woman19 yes, well he has clearly run out of things to say if a plastic cup wielding youth can stop him. No surprises there then; unfortunate by-product of having no policies whatsoever and dodgy funding that pesky reporters keep asking about Hmm.

^Executive of 1922 has made no decision. Paralysis.
I wonder if there should be a vote of No Confidence in the 1922 Executive? Colleagues are growing impatient.^

So in summary the result of tonight’s mini drama is: 1922 - 0. Theresa May - 1.

Queenofthorns - the Remainvoter website was recommending LibDem because without tactical voting, the SNP will win 3 seats, the Turquoise Big Arrow Party will win one, Labour another and the LibDems the 6th - so it's not about whether the Greens would get a 2nd seat, it's whether they'd get a seat at all Confused

They were suggesting that by voting LibDem, the SNP would get their 4th seat in place of the Labour seat Confused They didn't even mention the possibility of the Greens getting a seat. Don't get me wrong, personally I'd love the SNP to get a 4th seat but I'm not seeing the logic of it in polling like this Hmm

It just illustrates how polling is all over the place.

What's the thing about the rule change? I'm not up to speed

TokyoSushi · 22/05/2019 18:42

@Whisky2014 the rule currently is that you can only bring a confidence vote in the PM once every 12 months, so not until December, the vote is to change that rule, so they can do it, well, now!

But they haven't voted to change it so the saga continues...

prettybird · 22/05/2019 18:43

I think the politicians can campaign tomorrow - it's just that the media can't report them doing so. So we get a UK and EU politics free day Shock

RedToothBrush · 22/05/2019 18:44

Asa Bennett @asabenn
Tory ERGers furious with 1922 for not being strong enough today on Theresa May. Some are unhappy with Graham Brady too. One sums up their feelings as follows: 🤯

Oh i see, oh wow. Ok thank you :)

georgedawes · 22/05/2019 18:45

Long time lurker checking in, never contribute as not nearly as knowledgeable as most here! I say lurker but have mentally withdrawn from brexit recently as my mental wellbeing just couldn't cope with it.

The elections tomorrow have made me wake up a bit, and the news today is sobering. I am in the East Mids and was thinking of voting lib dem tomorrow (normally vote Lab) however remain voter says Green. Do people think this is the best vote? Looking at the opinion polls I feel lib dem is likely a better use of my (and DH's) vote.

I've also run down my brexit supplies which I will have to look at again. What a mess.

TiddleToddle · 22/05/2019 18:58

I'm also mainly a lurker and in a quandary about who to vote for tomorrow. Am in the SE and will vote for the best remain party from a tactical point of view. Should I trust remain voter and vote change? That feels counter intuitive to me!

DGRossetti · 22/05/2019 18:59

Reasons for the UK to discredit the UN #101:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-48371388

The UN has passed a resolution demanding the UK return control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

In the non-binding vote in the General Assembly in New York, 116 states were in favour and only six against, a major diplomatic blow to the UK.

(contd)

bellinisurge · 22/05/2019 18:59

@georgedawes , like everything overthinking it can do your head in. I'm NW England. Usually a Labour voter (not under Corbyn). Also old.
I'm voting Lib Dem because i have to hold my nose the least tight to vote for them.
I can't be arsed tactical voting in so huge a constituency.

tobee · 22/05/2019 19:01

Thanks @prettybird .

I'm nowhere near as knowledgeable as most people here. But that doesn't stop me. BlushBlush

georgedawes · 22/05/2019 19:04

Thanks bellini. I think I probably will vote lib dem and encourage tell DH to do so too.

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 22/05/2019 19:18

Brexit pie (all tinned ingredients) went down quite well at dinner Smile.

DH and I debating whether to vote SNP or Libdem tomorrow...

I have decided to dress in blue and yellow for the day Grin.

@JMPSimor
IMPORTANT, please share. If you have been told you’re not registered to vote and thought you were, in particular EU nationals, DO NOT GIVE UP. Turns out erroneous letters have been sent out. Go to your town hall to check & if too late for that go to your polling station.
