Who should I vote for in the European Elections?

I really want to remain in the EU or at the very least have a second referendum. How do I find out which party in my area that supports this has the best chance of winning seats?

I've tried google but can't find what I'm looking for...

I think there are a few different websites on tactical voting - Remain united & Remain voter, for example.

You can get a more detailed look at your constituency by reading its wiki entry for EU elections, which gives all the results since 1999. The danger of only looking at 2014 results is that there was a significant protest vote against the Lib Dems as they were still in coalition with the Tories. If you have a look at 2004, 2009 and 2014, though, you can get a decent idea of which Remain party has been able to get one or more seats in the past.

In most areas the Lib Dems are probably the best bet this time round - they're going up in the polls & local election results have been a boost. Greens might also stand a chance in some constituences - eg in the SW where there's a Green MEP who is apparently v good.

I'm in Yorks & Humber & voting Lib Dem, as are quite a few people on the Westminstenders thread.

I might still be tempted to vote Labour in the NE even though they're not really a Remain party, because there are only 3 MEPs for the whole region and each one has to have quite a high % of the vote to get a seat. It's probably a straight battel between Brexit party & Labour there, though I appreciate (& understand) that a lot of people aren't prepared to vote Labour this time.

The advice is SNP in Scotland, Plaid Cymru in Wales and LibDem in ALL regions of England.

NI has a different voting system but the best Remain Party is the Alliance Party.

Oakenbeach · 14/05/2019 18:30

It’s got to be Lib Dem based on what you want and recent polls and the local election results.... they have the momentum.

calpop · 14/05/2019 18:32

yep, got to be lib dems, hard as it is..Only chance of stopping the odious Nigel and his Brexit Party being a walkover.

bellinisurge · 14/05/2019 19:22

Lib Dems. Holding my nose to do it.

purplelass · 14/05/2019 19:35

Cool, Lib Dems it is then. I might even forgive them for the coalition if they help us stay in the EU!

If you are west midlands it is highly likely to be brexit party. Past 4 elections dominated by UKIP and tory. I will vote lib dem but as with every vote in the last 8 years or so I again expect to be on the losing side

Yaralie · 14/05/2019 19:55

Every vote for thew LIbDems will register as a Remain vote and may actually elect a Libdem MEP.

Remember you are voting in multi-member constituencies so even in the West Midlands, the MEPs elected should not all be Farage puppets.

bellinisurge · 14/05/2019 20:06

@IgnoranceIsStrength , it's not first past the post. It's different. You get more than one MEP per region. I'm NW England. I fully expect the Brexshit Party to do well in my part of the region (in fact Yaxley Lennon will probably pick up a few knuckle dragged votes round wher I live) but they'll do less well in, say Liverpool. We are both, I think NW England.

Coppersulphate · 14/05/2019 20:45

Vote for the Brexit party. They are the only party which can be trusted to honour the result of the referendum.
I have already voted for them. And they are doing very well in the polls.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 14/05/2019 20:47

Sadly even with the this type of voting works every previous eu election going back 4 cycles has only had ukip/tory/Labour meps voted in. There is an excellent local Labour mep but I just can't vote for him knowing Labours position. But I dont think there will be enough votes even for one lib dem mep here.

bellinisurge · 14/05/2019 20:54

Hurray! Copper sulphate has joined us. Lots of cheery news to share.

lljkk · 14/05/2019 20:59

I'm super glad LibDems did the coalition (not b/c I support Tories).
It was a grown up pragmatic thing for LibDems to be part of coalition & gave many of the individual LD MPs valuable experience in running govt. The LibDems put a brake on Tories & avoided an even more odious coalition with DUP or purely minority govt.

Anyway, thanks for thread. My postal vote arrived today so I need a decision by end of this week, not on polling day. I previously read an analysis for my region (East of England) that said Greens would be better choice here. Cannot find that analysis that said that though, now, argh.

JessicaPeach · 14/05/2019 21:04

I'm nw and going for Lib Dem this time. Hopefully a bit of the brexit party vote here will be split between them and tommy Robinson or whatever he's calling himself now.

Had some propaganda through the door from the brexit party today, my husband didn't though, have I been secretly profiled as a potential supporter?! Shock

Peregrina · 14/05/2019 21:05

Every vote for thew LIbDems will register as a Remain vote and may actually elect a Libdem MEP.

This is important - recall how, although UKIP only managed to elect Carswell as a UKIP MP once, the BBC justified their wall to wall Farage coverage on the grounds that 10% voted for UKIP. Funnily enough, the same arguement didn't apply to the Greens at the time even though they had a decent vote share.

So even if you end up with some of Farage's fascists in your area, nationally there will be a Remain vote which can be expressed as a percentage. I admit Labour votes are a problem - best maybe to split them and treat them as half Leave and half Remain, which would well reflect their fence sitting attitude.

NoWordForFluffy · 14/05/2019 21:13

I'm NW and have voted LD tonight as our postal votes came today.

I'm hoping they get a massive surge in popularity. And I'm with lljkk about the coalition. I've never held a grudge against them.

Coppersulphate · 14/05/2019 21:54

Thank you for the welcome Bellini. I have as much right to post as you.

Spinnaret · 14/05/2019 22:05

Except coppersulphate, the OP does not want Brexit, wants a second referendum etc. So to suggest voting for Nigel's troupe of arseholes is unhelpful at best.

Doubletrouble99 · 15/05/2019 00:09

I wouldn't bother voting to be honest as the MEP won't even be taking up their seats.

bellinisurge · 15/05/2019 05:34

Of course you can @Coppersulphate . Your comments are always welcome.

Mrscog · 15/05/2019 05:44

I’m voting for change uk, it’s a PR system so you should just vote for who you like. I’m sick of all main party’s and want to send a remain message that it’s time for something different.

Theworldisfullofgs · 15/05/2019 05:59

lljkk if you find the analysis I'd appreciate the link.
Thanks

Tanith · 15/05/2019 07:17

My DS is spitting mad because he has had a Brexit Party leaflet addressed to him - his first political communication as a new voter and it’s from that racist conman!
We have not, so it is targeted. It’s not well targeted, though Smile

tomhazard · 15/05/2019 07:19

DH and I are both voting Lib Dem as the most vocal anti-Brexit party which aligns with both our views.

Tanith · 15/05/2019 07:20

Getting people around here complaining they received the leaflets when they have removed themselves from the public election register, some are signed up for no junk mail.
They are not best pleased, either!
