Who should I vote for in the European Elections?

I really want to remain in the EU or at the very least have a second referendum. How do I find out which party in my area that supports this has the best chance of winning seats?

I've tried google but can't find what I'm looking for...

thought this was an interesting piece:
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/may/13/why-i-wont-be-advising-people-to-vote-tactically-in-the-european-elections

generally I think a vote for the LibDems is most straightforward as it will be taken absolutely as anti-Brexit. latest polls show that they have a chance of taking seats virtually everywhere, even in areas where they weren't expecting to. key thing though is to vote for any party that supports a second referendum (LD, green, SNP, plaid) and encourage other folk to vote...

Getting people around here complaining they received the leaflets when they have removed themselves from the public election register, some are signed up for no junk mail.

Political parties have access to the electoral register, even if you're not on the full one, to use for election purposes.

I'm not sure about the junk mail thing though; that's an RM issue, I believe (and I'm not sure election material would fall under that heading either; something to check).

Peregrina · 15/05/2019 08:15

Tanith - registered political parties are entitled to a copy of the full register, and for elections they are also entitled to send a mailshot to everyone, which I believe is either one to the household or individually named ones. So hence DS has had one from Farage's Fascists aka the Brexit party, and I have had one from the LDs, and the whole household have had one from ChangeUK, Labour, and Greens. Some of the household are on the full register, and some not.

Lib Dems? do you want to see that man back who increased the university tuition fees to £9000?

Peregrina · 15/05/2019 08:22

Sturnundcalm - I agree with that Guardian piece about tactical voting.

If say we get 40% for pro EU parties, 40% for pro Brexit, and 20% for Labour who don't know whether they are pro or anti, then at least it knocks the story that "80% of people voted for parties who supported Brexit" on the head. The important thing is that each party gets its vote out.

Peregrina · 15/05/2019 08:25

Clegg has moved on to pastures new.... Do the Tories want Cameron, IDS, other no hopers back, or resurrect Maggie from the Grave? (Yes to the last). Do Labour want Blair or Foot back?

bluebell34567 · 15/05/2019 08:29

Clegg will find a way back to Lib Dems.

CrunchyCarrot · 15/05/2019 08:29

I've voted LibDem in my postal vote. :)

bluebell34567 · 15/05/2019 08:30

i dont expect Cameron will be back.

bluebell34567 · 15/05/2019 08:30

but George Osborne can be back.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 15/05/2019 08:40

Greens might also stand a chance in some constituences - eg in the SW where there's a Green MEP who is apparently v good.

Molly Scott Cato.

We're not a Green voting family usually but MSC is a really hard working effective candidate. She's getting our votes.

Peridot1 · 15/05/2019 08:44

I’m SW and have voted for Molly Scott Cato.

purplelass · 15/05/2019 09:17

Vote for the Brexit party. They are the only party which can be trusted to honour the result of the referendum.

Erm... thanks Coppersulphate but I'm pretty sure I said I really want to remain in the EU...

The LDs were rightly castigated for this, but things have moved on.... You can fight the battles of 2010 or move on to today. Continuing to focus on this is a bit like refusing to vote for Labour because they went into Iraq.

Oakenbeach · 15/05/2019 09:37

Clegg will find a way back to Lib Dems.

It’s more likely Blair will (try to) be back given his recent profile. Refusing to vote for a party because their previous leader who had been voted out and had nothing to do with current UK politics may come back is to obsessively hold a grudge imo.

Coppersulphate · 15/05/2019 09:39

Purplelass,
I understand you want to remain.
But I want to leave, hence my post.
I want to honour the result of the referendum.

Mistigri · 15/05/2019 09:45

Where do you live OP?

The thing to bear in mind about the d'Hondt system is that it will probably reward a two-way split in the remain vote but not a three-way split.

Vote LD or Green - there are some good Green candidates too. I'd look at the candidate who is top of your local list and make a choice between the two parties based on that. In the SW I'd consider voting for the current and very good Green MEP.

Alsohuman · 15/05/2019 09:46

It’s a one issue vote so anything the LibDems have done in the past is irrelevant. They’re getting my vote. I’m very sad the Remain parties are splitting the vote.

Mistigri · 15/05/2019 09:57

I’m very sad the Remain parties are splitting the vote.

Under D'Hondt a two way split can be advantageous. Depends on vote shares and the number of seats available in your constituency. D'Hondt isn't proper proportional representation and beyond a certain vote share, some votes are wasted.

This is what the remainvoter people are trying to do - direct votes to parties that have the best chance of picking up an extra seat.

purplelass · 15/05/2019 09:58

I understand you want to remain.
But I want to leave, hence my post.

But Coppersulphate that's like someone asking for advice on their baby and you advising them not to have kids - it's irrelevant!

Anyway, thanks for your input, and for everyone else's which actually answered my question!

Peregrina Some who have received this leaflet are not old enough to vote.

TeacupDrama · 15/05/2019 10:08

we have a roughly 3 way split with current group of MEPS
we have 19 labour, 18 conservatives, 17 UKIP/brexit,then 1-3 for lots of other parties greens SNP Plaid, Lib Dem independents and from Northern Ireland
you need to look at your large constituency and see how it generally votes and see who/ what party is close to tilting it one way or another but as you are voting for a party it is different if your area have 6 MEPs they need about 16-18% to get a seat, so if your favourite only got 2% it might be wasted if they got 15% they your vote could push them to get a seat if they have 20% they would need 30%+ to get a second seat
in this type of system I don't think strategy helps much

Yaralie · 15/05/2019 10:18

The best advice for Remainers is to vote LibDem in ALL parts of England.

We have only been contacted by the LibDems and brexit. Easy choice. We both have postal votes and voted LibDem. Brexit leaflet in recycling bin.

Kaddm · 15/05/2019 10:19

I think Libdem have the slogan “bollocks to Brexit” so I think that’d be your best option
