Brexit

Who should I vote for in the European Elections?

I really want to remain in the EU or at the very least have a second referendum. How do I find out which party in my area that supports this has the best chance of winning seats?

I've tried google but can't find what I'm looking for...

No... they haven't been unequivocal. Now LDs are running a "Stop Brexit" msg now, but few months ago Vince Cable did a town hall type speech in our local town (I have a LD MP but my area voted 58% for Leave). VC talked about a straight "Revoke - May's Deal" one off only 3rd Referendum as a way forward. It was NOT a we should "Stop Brexit" speech at all.

Weasely. Puts me off. I think ChangeUK might have my vote.

AutumnCrow · 15/05/2019 20:01

VC talked about a straight "Revoke - May's Deal" one off only 3rd Referendum as a way forward

Sorry I genuinely don't understand that

lljkk · 15/05/2019 20:11

VC in local talk I attended, promoted 3rd referendum as "a way forward" to decide what to do since Westminster was at impasse. And profoundly said should accept the result if it vote was for Leave again.

VC did not talk about 3rd Refdum in tones of "This is our chance to stop Brexit, whee!" which is the tone of the LDs website now. That is what I find weaselly.

I like VC, honest, and I wish May's deal were supported to end our purgatory since Revoke seems impossible (EU doesn't want our craziness)... but I can't see a need to get LDs in for sure. That won't be the important result. MEPs won't have real power. The raw %s backing 3xRemain vs. 2xLeave vs. 2 big Establishment parties is how the results will be interpretted and reported.

Well... obviously Tories will try to spin their kicking as "Finish-Brexit!", Labour will scramble sheepishly & say inane contradictory things in response to their kicking. So we know their fate. The real result to watch is the raw% voting for 3xRemain vs. 2xLeave parties.

Milkywayfan · 15/05/2019 20:41

Nigel Farage has also said on the record “Worrying about global warming is the stupidest thing in human history” which given 97% of scientists disagree wouldn’t make him my favourite candidate Smile

Milkywayfan · 15/05/2019 20:42

Sorry wrong thread ! Tho still true !

bluebell34567 · 15/05/2019 22:07

previous leader who had been voted out and had nothing to do with current UK politics may come back is to obsessively hold a grudge imo
thats not correct, it is taking lessons from the past.

Random18 · 16/05/2019 17:01

So LD will do well in WM?

Yes there will be a strong Brexit party vote here but some areas of the WM’s were very close. Birmingham for example

Also a lot who voted in the referendum have never voted before. It depends on turnout too.

And I really do think that many Leave voters will be turned off by Farage. Well I hope Grin

bellinisurge · 16/05/2019 17:19

Just seen our local Labour MPs fb page. This is a NW England strong Leave area. Bleating that a vote for the Lib Dems will give a majority to the Brexit Party. Not how the voting system works, dear. Is what I want to say but I am staying below the radar as a Remain voter locally because this is potentially actually a Yaxley Lennon area.

1tisILeClerc · 16/05/2019 17:24

Waxy lemon was on my ballot form. He didn't get my vote.

Bodoni · 16/05/2019 19:53

RemainVoter are running a survey they’d like sharing as widely as poss - www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/EU_voter_intention_survey/
They may be about to advise about tactical voting? twitter.com/remainvoter?lang=en

Yaralie · 17/05/2019 10:55

The latest EU election opinion poll (by Yougov for The Times) shows-

1 Brexit
2 Liberal Democrats
3 Labour
4 Green
5 Conservative

It is true that Farage's so-called party is well ahead, but it is clear that the LibDems are the main challengers now, as support for both Labour and Conservative sinks to an all time low. The best way to fight brexit is to vote Liberal Democrat.

Vote Green! ... two birds with one stone...

  • tackling climate change & stay in the EU!
1tisILeClerc · 17/05/2019 11:10

Vote Green! ... two birds with one stone...
I am not sure this is the best way tactically. It divides the votes. Remaining in the EU is the best way to tackle climate change as most of the EU is pushing for it, even the 'true' Gillets Jaunes (not the infiltrators setting fire to Paris).
Choosing to tackle climate change is (to many) a 'luxury' as it will have serious cost implications. The UK with a buggered economy can't afford to actually do it.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 17/05/2019 12:25

@1tisLeClerc
I know & I am saddened by the fact that by voting Green, I will be splitting the vote (especially as I am normally happy to vote for lib dem when there's not the option of a green vote).
But I'm sick of political games.
For me, tackling climate change is just as important as Brexit, or lack thereof, thus I think people should just vote for what they believe in, rather than tactically.

Rainbunny · 18/05/2019 10:25

I'm in the Eastern Region and have already mailed my ballot - Libdem!

Rainbunny · 18/05/2019 10:29

Oh and while I have historically been a Labour voter, I wouldn't vote Labour in the EU elections simply because any vote for Labour will give pro-Brexit politicians an excuse to pretend that Labour voters were all voting to get Brexit done. There will be no such confusion or opportunities for lies about what a LibDem vote means.

1tisILeClerc · 18/05/2019 10:47

{There will be no such confusion or opportunities for lies about what a LibDem vote means.}
Unless there is a problem and they change tack then it looks like that may be the best 'no Brexit' option, but take advice from others.
I don't wish to sound 'patronising' but in terms of climate change the UK has a miniscule impact compared to many other countries. This is not suggesting the UK shouldn't do anything but the things the UK COULD do apart from leading by example (which if the UK leaves will hardly be noticed globally) but UK scientists in collaboration with scientists across the EU COULD be a strong force in developing better technology and techniques.
The current problem is to prevent the UK leaving the EU so I would argue that most other issues should be on the 'back burner' to be fought another day. If the UK leaves many other causes may simply be unachievable in a climate of financial depression and regulatory isolation from the conscientious countries that have the will to tackle global issues.
The UK is small and it is wrong to think that it can command continued influence worldwide. In the winter an area of Australia roughly the size of England was severely flooded over a couple of weeks by torrential rain. You could also drop the UK into the Brazilian rainforest and not be able to 'find' it.
Fight the problems one at a time.

lljkk · 18/05/2019 11:16

All 3 of the pro-Brexit leaflets arrived in my mailbox today. Spouting close to identical rhetoric (and ample distribution of exclamation marks). Their vote is divided, too.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/05/2019 11:35

This is my A4 padded envelope sending their election leaflet back to UKIP without a stamp. Sadly the Brexit leaflet sank to the bottom of the recycling bin so I couldn't do the same with that one.

I wrote 'No racist bigots live here' on it too.

Who should I vote for in the European Elections?
Peregrina · 18/05/2019 12:20

I wrote 'We don't vote for fascists in this household', on the Brexcrement one. I don't think UKIP sent anything.

AutumnCrow · 18/05/2019 18:07

I sent back the Faragist one with 'take me off ALL your databases' written on it. No stamp. Big envelope.

Will do the same with the UKIP one.

Stilltalkstotrees · 18/05/2019 22:27

From a friend:

“I am a 71 year old socialist who has always voted Labour, wherever I've lived, who is going to vote Lib Dem on Thursday - with tears in my eyes.

Your anti-Brexit position has betrayed the working man. The EU has implemented so many good laws for ordinary people.

You can never do a deal with the Tories to protect workers which some future Thatcher will not tear up.

I am ashamed of you.

What has the EU done for us?

provided money for areas hit by industrial decline, given us equal pay laws and more holiday entitlement.

provided money for poor and deprived areas in all member states, given us cleaner beaches and rivers, clearer air, lead free petrol, restrictions on landfill dumping and created a recycling culture.

given us more consumer protection, improved food labelling, banned growth hormones and other harmful food additives and given us better product safety.

broken up of monopolies and provided funds for young people to study and work abroad.

given us smoke-free workplaces and more greater protection for workers.

You are saying that you aren't grateful for all of this!

Tanith · 19/05/2019 09:32

I’m sad to see that Change isn’t receiving the support it should. Those MPs have all fought hard for Remain, to their own cost. Some have been thrown out of their parties. They’ve received death threats and appalling abuse.

Peregrina · 19/05/2019 09:45

The problem I see with Change UK is that they are a bit of a mish-mash and have come together because of fully justified disagreements with their old parties but haven't yet go a cohesive idea of what they do stand for.

The Brexit party has one simple idea - Farage dressed up in a new guise. They haven't any ideas either, but as long as Farage fronts it they don't need them. Once he's out of the picture then whoosh, like UKIP, they are nothing.

Ces6 · 19/05/2019 09:47

I would vote Libdem if I were in the UK.
