Once again not much to report on Brexit itself.

The sideshow of Gavin Williamson lots set to run and rumble on. The scandal further weakens May as she has lost a key ally. Despite his protests of innocence, May herself must believe he is guilty. Whether this is because she is indeed too heavily influenced by Sedwill is the question, but for her to sack him when she has failed to do so with other Cabinet Members so many times means she must feel there is good reason. Every other party has seen it as a good opportunity to put the boot in and demand an investigation. So far this has been paid lip service as the Cabinet Office must approve any investigation and this doesn't seem to be forthcoming from Lidington. This may not hold, if pressure grows. In truth the whole affair is unlikely to damage Williamson's leadership ambitions; he has raised his profile and set up a narrative of a Remainer Victim. Penny Mordaunt has been the other major beneficiary of the issue.

May now seems to have abandoned the idea that there will be a way forward found before the European elections and they are now definitely going ahead. This isn't a surprise as there is no incentive for Labour to have an agreement before the EU elections in which the Conservatives are certain to get a bloody nose. She also seems to be dropping hints they she will give into a customs union.

We have a visit from Trump to look forward to, which will be utterly joyous. There are rumours that he might meet Farage whilst he is here. His visit starts on 3rd June and finish on the 5th.

The Peterborough By Election is set for just a few days later on the 6th June. The Brexit Party have a very good chance of winning their first Parliamentary seat here - so the temptation to have a photo shoot with Trump will be all the more appealing to Farage. The hope must be that the Brexit vote will be split, allowing Labour to retain the seat. The previous Conservative MP, Stewart Jackson might well stand and he's very Brexity, George Galloway is trying to get the Brexit Party candidency though I think it unlikely and he will probably stand as a Pro-Brexit Independent anyway. There is also the prospect of Farage himself standing as its a winnable seat, but this seems unlikely as you can't be an MEP and an MP and its a high risk strategy to go for MP rather than a sure fire MEP. (Plus the pay is better for MEP).

May faces a challenge at grassroots level with an Emergency Meeting called by the Conservative Associations at her leadership. This will be in mid June. After the local, EU elections and Trump's visit this will be difficult for her to survive. Whilst she has survived this long, this will prove to be her biggest challenge yet.

It has to be said that there is no sign that we will get anything but no deal ultimately. There is an admission that May can't pass a Queen's speech with anything meaningful, so as long as she remains as PM parliament is even more paralysed that it has been to date. All things point to a new leader who is very Brexitty or accidental no deal because May can not do anything.

Meanwhile in the real world there are rumours that cancer treatments are now being delayed indefinitely due to Brexit... And so we continue to destroy ourselves and now, it seems, actively kill people in the name of Brexit.

Local Election results will start tonight with the majority tomorrow. Tories are expecting 700 - 1000 losses.

Hello! Checking into the new thread. I’m definitely going to bed as usual and checking the results tomorrow.

MissMalice · 02/05/2019 18:26

PMK. Just been to vote. It was very quiet.

prettybird · 02/05/2019 18:29

It's actually quite strange not having any elections here in Scotland. Our next local ones (after the EP ones of course Wink) are in 2021 for the Scottish Parliament.

Two pissedoff not so regal pussies to mark my place - they were locked in I disgrace having brought in a fledgling.

PMK.

Thanks, as always, Red.

HollowTalk · 02/05/2019 18:32

Thanks for this reminder to vote!

BercowsSilkTie · 02/05/2019 18:33

PMK. Thanks.

floraloctopus · 02/05/2019 18:34

I'd forgotten that we had local elections today because we only got a poll card for the MEPs election later this month. Luckily a politician from a party I have no intention of voting for posted a reminder on Twitter to go and vote for him Grin

TalkinPaece · 02/05/2019 18:39

I voted earlier today

Interesting times

1tisILeClerc · 02/05/2019 18:40

PMK Thanks again

BercowsSilkTie · 02/05/2019 18:41

I walked home from school this morning with a friend who commented that for all we hadn't seen each other to chat for several weeks, that nothing had actually changed with regards to brexit and we are still no further on. Depressing and frustrating.

Another friend is standing in the local elections and is expecting the results in the early hours. We currently have a labour led council although I don't think they have a majority. I don't know how that works though.

What is everyone expecting to see in the locals? Big change? Tories smacked in the face? I think I asked similar the other day but can't remember. Apologies if I'm repeating myself!

Peregrina · 02/05/2019 18:46

And so we continue to destroy ourselves and now, it seems, actively kill people in the name of Brexit.

But the local Tories are distancing themselves from the connection between cancer treatments and Brexit, or any decisions made in Westminster and local issues. (Or distancing themselves from anything which requires a bit of thought!)

Having said that, having done a telling session earlier today, I came away thinking that in Joe Cox's words, we did have more in common than divided us.

An update on the NW candidates for the Brexit Party.

This has now turned into an internal row.

The no 7 candidate for the party in the NW is from Warrington.

She's now come out and said she can't support the party if Claire Fox (the no 1 candidate) is on the party ticket and has resigned the party over Fox's refusal to apologise.

It's just been on the BBC local news.

Meanwhile also in Warrington
www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/news/17613844.mp-concerned-over-tommy-robinson-warrington-visit/
Tommy Robinson gets covered in milkshake during Warrington visit

They've had to close the comments on the article

That's the second time in two days he's got milkshaked. Three days and it becomes the lastest trend.

Yes I’ve seen quite a bit along these lines and yet I have still voted with Brexit firmly in mind. I simply will not vote for anyone who is facilitating a damaging Brexit. I really hope that is reflected across the country. No idea when ours are due to be announced - where do I find out?

floraloctopus · 02/05/2019 18:50

That's a tragic waste of a milk shake.

Icantreachthepretzels · 02/05/2019 18:52

The lady in front of me at the polling station asked the person handing out ballot papers if they had had a good turn out - it had been very quiet.
My mum said the lady at her place told her it had been very quiet all day, at her polling station, but the inspector had said that that was the busiest polling station in the area.
Her school was a polling station today (kids weren't in but staff were) the station was right outside my mum's classroom door - she said about ten people turned up all day.

It seems like turnout has been very low, all around.

Thanks for the new thread Red

QueenOfThorns · 02/05/2019 18:54

I voted earlier (I was the only one there) but DH is going later, so I’ll get him to try and look at how many names are crossed off. The proverbial donkey with red rosette will win here, but hopefully I’ve helped cut their majority and maybe make them think a little!

floraloctopus · 02/05/2019 18:55

I'm not surprised if the turnout is low but I'd rather it was high with protest votes.
On my ballot paper I had two choices but two were for the same party, one I'd never vote for at all and the other was one that I'd normally consider hadn't a hope of getting elected but they got my vote this year.

floraloctopus · 02/05/2019 18:56

^Three choices, 2 votes.

DGRossetti · 02/05/2019 18:57

frumpety · 02/05/2019 18:59

Please tell me that being milkshaked is someone throwing a perfectly good milk based product at someone and nothing rude !

LonelyTiredandLow · 02/05/2019 19:00

PMK - not sure if this was posted already MP who said Labour isn't a Remain party now doesn't want to lose support of Remainers.

RHTawneyonabus · 02/05/2019 19:01

There way a bit of a q in the polling station which was a first, then again think most like me had just got off the London train.

Very odd the GW is doubling down on his denial, surely May wouldn’t have sacked a staunch ally without good reason. I suppose creating a victim narrative is his best option now.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/05/2019 19:02

Thanks, red 💐

Not just rumour about cancer patients:

That Indie article linked on the last thread had an understandably angry cancer patient who'd been told he couldn't have the new treatment, because of Brexit

  • the NHS was having to make extra budget provision for Brexit and hence cutting back on new treatments & tech.
floraloctopus · 02/05/2019 19:05

Queen we have the proverbial donkey with a blue rosette here. Actually, it probably wouldn't need a donkey, you could just have the rosette as this area is very blue.
