Westminstenders: Local Elections Madness

This week has gone from banging your head against the wall to wanting to bang your head through it.

Labour have voted to support a 2nd ref as their EU election campaign strategy. Only for Corbyn to ignore it. And a row has broken out.

Change UK seem well on track to make everyone else look professional and to look as 'liberal elite' as humanly possible in a real life reverse paraody of themselves.

The Brexit Party is going from strength to strength with the most wtf candidates imaginable and Farage is happy cos his mate is coming to tea with the Queen.

The Liberal Democrats have decided that anti semitism is OK in an effort to keep Labour seats.

And the Conservatives. Where to start? Probably with the Tory Leadership Election infighting which looks suspiciously as if its now breached national security.

As for Brexit. No one really wants to talk about it. Local elections are next week. May is now apparently supporting the Malthouse Compromise. Be warned, it is difficult to see it as anything but a Trojan Horse for No Deal. Not that everyone has worked this out yet. But until we have the blood bath of the local elections over and done with on Thursday, don't expect much to happen.

Then expect the Tories to lose their minds...

No idea how to discern who to vote for...
Green, LDs or cuk. Which has the best chance in my area? How do I find out?
I guess I'll vote for whoever has the best chance.

Littlespaces · 30/04/2019 17:27

What is your area?

Pmk.

Fucking Labour

Songsofexperience · 30/04/2019 17:42

Labour Remain MPs welcoming the outcome is again a case of putting party before country. No better than the other side.

tobee · 30/04/2019 17:51

The Labour remain MPs need to go to specsavers

woodpigeons · 30/04/2019 17:51

Copied from a friend but sure she won’t mind

"Apparentement
Due to the fact that votes cast for smaller parties can be 'wasted' as they do not amount to
enough to obtain a seat, in some countries such lists are allowed to 'pool' their 'wasted' votes, if
they announce this before the election, so that they can obtain a seat together, although they
had run as separate electoral lists. This is the case in the Netherlands and in Switzerland for
example."
That would have sorted the ChangeUK/LibDem/Green problem, would it not?

I am glad that in a couple of weeks there will be strong decisive government focused on negotiating and getting the best trade and other 'deals' from around the world.

On the other hand, the UK is well and truly 'rogered'.

Oh labour ... I'm OK with their policy in theory but when are they going to admit that they have already done step one - aimed for a GE - it didn't work. They are in the midst of step 2 - in talks with the tories - and it is not going well, the tories are not giving ground so therefore as policy states they are NOW AT step 3? And it is with great reluctance, having failed in all other avenues, that they must start agitating for a second referendum.

There is no purpose to that policy if it never moves forward. Especially as by refusing to move onto the next step when the first has failed they are, in essence, cheating. It's nearly a year old now. It should have moved on - not changed - moved on.

I might email the usual suspects again.

The only good thing about my hair being on fire is that it saves me bothering colouring it.

Littlespaces · 30/04/2019 18:36

The advice on Remain sites so far is to support Greens in the East Midlands for EU election, but I would monitor the situation as it is fast moving.

No idea for council elections.

frumpety · 30/04/2019 18:41

DH's polling card came today for EU elections. Explained Labours position on Brexit, so basically our options are Green or Libdems. ' Ah so we are fucked then ?' was his response. My usual glass half full optimistic demeaner was challenged to say the least.

Still don't think Brexit will happen Smile

Iambuffy · 30/04/2019 18:43

I'm voting for an independent in the council elections

Littlespaces · 30/04/2019 18:57

We do have an Independent standing in the local council elections but they have yet to declare why they are standing!

Icantreachthepretzels · 30/04/2019 19:00

I just emailed Tom Watson. The email bounced back because his inbox was too full! Seems a lot of people must have got in touch with him after that decision came out.

Ellie56 · 30/04/2019 19:04

So Jeremy Corbyn and his cronies "would support the option of a confirmatory Brexit referendum."

Hope they realise all the people who would have voted for Labour had they come off the fence, will now "support the option" of voting for other parties who specifically support a referendum.

ElenadeClermont · 30/04/2019 19:04

At least I will not have to feel guilty for not voting Labour. It is better to know now.

bellinisurge · 30/04/2019 19:06

I nearly so nearly considered voting Tory in tbe local elections about a divisive local green issue that I feel strongly about . They have the best chance of toppling Labour here and they have spotted a way to get lots of votes by taking the opposite view to Labour on this specific issue and campaigning locally solely on this. And then I discovered they were a UKIP candidate in 2016. Screw that. I'll probably hold my nose and vote Green.

Peregrina · 30/04/2019 19:30

Even Polly Toynbee in today's Guardian was saying how the supposedly Brexit supporting Labour areas in the North are absolutely fed up with it, and are now changing their minds. She reminds people that it was the elderly Tories in the South east who want Brexit.

I think we saw this effect with the recent by - election in Wales - a Remain Labour candidate won, in what was a Leave area.

TalkinPaece · 30/04/2019 19:38

We do have an Independent standing in the local council elections but they have yet to declare why they are standing!
Be VERY CAREFUL
of anybody who says they are Independent
I know of UKIP, BNP and other unsavoury types who are hiding their true affiliation

Peregrina · 30/04/2019 19:43

Indeed - Independents are usually not - they are usually horribly right wing, or they are someone who's fallen out with their local party, and not usually for honourable reasons.
