Westminstenders: Local Elections Madness

This week has gone from banging your head against the wall to wanting to bang your head through it.

Labour have voted to support a 2nd ref as their EU election campaign strategy. Only for Corbyn to ignore it. And a row has broken out.

Change UK seem well on track to make everyone else look professional and to look as 'liberal elite' as humanly possible in a real life reverse paraody of themselves.

The Brexit Party is going from strength to strength with the most wtf candidates imaginable and Farage is happy cos his mate is coming to tea with the Queen.

The Liberal Democrats have decided that anti semitism is OK in an effort to keep Labour seats.

And the Conservatives. Where to start? Probably with the Tory Leadership Election infighting which looks suspiciously as if its now breached national security.

As for Brexit. No one really wants to talk about it. Local elections are next week. May is now apparently supporting the Malthouse Compromise. Be warned, it is difficult to see it as anything but a Trojan Horse for No Deal. Not that everyone has worked this out yet. But until we have the blood bath of the local elections over and done with on Thursday, don't expect much to happen.

Then expect the Tories to lose their minds...

That's an unfortunate set of initials.

Songsofexperience · 30/04/2019 15:04

I've had a lot of work the last few days and have found it hard to keep up: when is Labour expected to make a definitive statement on their position? I thought today was crunch time?

DGRossetti · 30/04/2019 15:07

That's an unfortunate set of initials.

Or rather cunning, if you assume the attention to detail of the average kipper ....

(who remembers the "literal democrats" ?)

woodpigeons · 30/04/2019 15:10

It’s difficult to know what is best DGR but it seems we can no longer rely on the morality or values of our MPs.
Perhaps we never could but things IMO seem much worse than before. I have never seen such a venal collection of MPs and we do seem to need some system of checks and balances.
I’ve been watching the latest TV series of Victoria. I thought I knew a lot about the Victorians but it has made me aware how much the crown was involved in politics of the day.
Is that a good thing ?
I really don’t know.

woodpigeons · 30/04/2019 15:21

And shorts for women Peregrina although it was OK to be naked above the waist, womens’ knees were banned.
I used to wear shorts in the house but kept a piece of African cloth to wrap around me before answering the door.
Long hair for men was also not allowed. There were stories of it being cut at the airport.

DGRossetti · 30/04/2019 15:23

It’s difficult to know what is best DGR but it seems we can no longer rely on the morality or values of our MPs.

Implicit in that statement is a suggestion there was a time when we could, and I don't think that's true.

woodpigeons · 30/04/2019 15:37

I don’t know DGR.
I have taken part in demonstrations against the government in the past so agree that we could never totally rely on MPs.
Within my lifetime though I don’t think there has been a party which first imposed such a dreadful austerity regime, for their own ends, and then was prepared to totally destroy the country for the same reason.
I don’t think we have ever been the laughing stock of the world before and in a position where we are likely to become a colony of China or the US.

Brexitisshit · 30/04/2019 15:48

@tobee I’m pages behind so this will probably be duplicating info:

The UK EU party want to revoke!

And @DadDadDad did you find this tweet?

borntobequiet · 30/04/2019 15:56

Shame they didn't call it the People's UK European Union Party (the first thing I thought was PUKEUP anyway)

prettybird · 30/04/2019 16:09

I find it quite shocking the number of people on other threads who don't understand the voting system in the EU elections Shock and have no awareness that the constituencies are different and that they have a single vote for a party , not an individual Hmm

So they come out with statements like "There is no point voting as I live in the safest of safe Conservative seats" Confused

Iambuffy · 30/04/2019 16:10

Thanks pigeon
I'm going to have to take it. No other option. 🤞
I share your despair....I've never had a sense of living through a corrupt regime change....until now.

lonelyplanetmum · 30/04/2019 16:13

Yes woodpigeons I agree.

That system only worked if Englishman’s word is his bond etc etc.
Now it isn't, if it ever really was.

Either way we are now internationally exposed as being riddled with deceitful, disingenuous charlatans as anywhere else, if not more.

So now we need transparent rules, codes, systems and sanctions for those in power - more than we did previously. That sounds authoritarian but ironically its to deal with authoritarians.

tobee · 30/04/2019 16:50

Thanks @GaspodeWonderCat and @Brexitisshit

lonelyplanetmum · 30/04/2019 16:54

The threads running away with me again but Labour's NEC has today clearly endorsed an alternative but still Brexit manifesto- is that right?

lonelyplanetmum · 30/04/2019 16:55

But is supporting a second ref if all else fails?

tobee · 30/04/2019 16:56

Labour Party NEC goes for fudge

tobee · 30/04/2019 16:56

Jon Craig on Sky says no change to what they said at conference

prettybird · 30/04/2019 16:58

All else has failed ConfusedAngry

tobee · 30/04/2019 16:59

Peston tweets Unison, usdaw and gmb says Corbyn and pals "are being delusional about likely consequences"

prettybird · 30/04/2019 16:59

...just as well I no longer vote Labour - otherwise I'd be really pissed off with them Grin

tobee · 30/04/2019 16:59

NB Peston tweeted this before breaking news

prettybird · 30/04/2019 17:00

oops - missed out the "don't" Blush

Random18 · 30/04/2019 17:00

I wonder how many votes labour will lose today.

I have been waiting to see before deciding whether to vote for them. But unless they unequivocally say they will campaign for a confirmatory referendum then I cannot vote for them

lonelyplanetmum · 30/04/2019 17:02

I don't understand the fudge?

It's??

  1. general election ( same old)
  2. get government tochange its policy ( failed)
  3. Referendum on Tory proposal???
TalkinPaece · 30/04/2019 17:02

If Labour support Brexit, I cannot support them.
