Westminstenders: 1001 Ways to wait for EUCO - Sprouts, Nits and Brexit

Not much more to say other than, all we can do is wait to hear our fate.

Which seems to lie in the hands of Macron.

I think these tweet sums a lot of it up from a couple of jaded soft leavers

Iain Martin @ iainmartin1
This terrible farce in Brussels tonight is like being British during the eurovision song contest. British entrant awaits fate, watching humiliating results come in, trying to smile for the audience back home.

George Trefgarne @georgetrefgarne
To be honest I think Buck’s Fizz and Cheryl thingummy would have made a better job of it

My advice: Don't wait up!

Pippa Crerar @pippacrerar
EU source on Macron: "He is in a bit of a schizophrenic situation - (his) domestic audience demands that he is tough on Britain for historic reasons. On the other hand, France is among the most-hit in any no-deal Brexit. It will take hours before we pull him down from his tree."

So Macron may end up being the one who gets the UK what it wants but is doing it to be tough on us. I'm not sure I understand EU politics.

I do dislike their use of the word 'deliver' wrt 'brexit.

Correct verb is 'impose'.

Hear hear. I also didn't like the final spin in TMs post flextension press piece. At the end she seemed to still be claiming Brexit will lead to a brighter future. I'll check but think that's what she said.

She's a lone voice there because even the ERG have stopped saying that. Any more uplifting news on their fractures and factions by the way?

There are a few very cross Brexit supporters on my FB page this morning-lots of outrage!

I would have thought that Leave voters would be more likely to be galvanised into pushing for No Deal due to this extension, not throw their hands up in the air and just do a complete U turn
If EU elections do go ahead I am convinced UK voter turnout will rocket.

Windowsareforcheaters · 11/04/2019 09:48

Are leavers getting angry or bored?

The leavers I know are rapidly losing interest.

woman19 · 11/04/2019 09:49

Francois arriving on a stage and the audience with their arms out to him, like some sort of idol

Francois is obviously a different kettle of fish, being an MP and all. Hmm

But they are quietly selling Yaxley Lennon in the same way to British children. They are specifically targetted online by the far right. I have heard of A level kids (boys) who are in awe of Lennon. This item on Channel 4 news about how the far right in is grooming British children.

www.channel4.com/news/the-young-man-who-was-radicalised-until-prevent-prised-him-away-from-the-far-right-extremists

Does anyone know:
Has EU has very clear rules on SM targetting by (external?) far right in elections?
Has EU also, got provisos on spending limits for campaigning for EU elections?
I wonder how they will be implemented for this EU election.
I wonder if this will be a useful information gathering exercise, in several ways.

HesterThrale · 11/04/2019 09:51

So where are we?
The talks with Corbyn will lead to nothing - why should he rescue the Tories?
She may present her deal again: I doubt it’ll pass.
Indicative votes don’t seem to produce one clear route.
So we’re no further ahead. What can we expect to happen over the summer that hasn’t already been tried?
It seems to me that a confirmatory ballot is more likely than a general election. The Tories know that in a GE their jobs are on the line and the Tories risk losing, but possibly not after a PV. Maybe they’d rather have a PV in order to hold onto power.

A PV doesn’t seem likely at this point, but then nor does anything else.

They should not take a 2 month summer break and waste 2 of the 6 months extension. Tusk said ‘Don’t waste it’ and he’s right.
This needs sorting.

BercowsSilkTie · 11/04/2019 09:53

So 2 questions:

Are we definitely taking part in the EU elections?

Is there still a risk of no deal?

lonelyplanetmum · 11/04/2019 09:54

So 2 questions

A Yes
A Yes

BercowsSilkTie · 11/04/2019 09:56

Thanks @lonelyplanetmum. So no June cliff edge. Just Halloween. Breathing space but no further forward really.

PostNotInHaste · 11/04/2019 09:58

@holidayshoppjng Robert Peston Tweet:

‘Slightly odd answer from
@theresa_may
on whether there should be a confirmatory Brexit referendum. She says she doesn't want one, but she seemed to be encouraging MPs to vote for one. #PMQs’

bellinisurge · 11/04/2019 09:58

Another yes and yes

DarlingNikita · 11/04/2019 09:58

Halloween? They're openly taking the piss now.
I don't blame them. The UK is a laughing stock and the likes of Mark 'perfidious Albion' Francois just keep making it worse.

lonelyplanetmum · 11/04/2019 09:59

Yes Hester's post below sums it up. TM still trying to get the WA through -dependent on Labour talks leading to the opposition supporting it.

OublietteBravo · 11/04/2019 10:00

I would have thought that Leave voters would be more likely to be galvanised into pushing for No Deal due to this extension, not throw their hands up in the air and just do a complete U turn. If EU elections do go ahead I am convinced UK voter turnout will rocket.

I don’t think so. My parents live in an area that voted strongly to leave. They report many people are reacting to the lack of Brexit by threatening never to vote again.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 11/04/2019 10:01

I’ve been waiting for my sole Brexit supporting Facebook friend (actually I have three but two never say anything) to unleash his fury and am finding myself slightly disappointed at the silence...

lonelyplanetmum · 11/04/2019 10:03

I think there's quite a lot of people are reacting to the lack of Brexit by threatening never to vote again.

If my FiL says that I think my appropriate response probably should be..ok then good on you....

NoWordForFluffy · 11/04/2019 10:03

If she can't get the WA through, her choices are no deal (where the EU27 will then insist on the WA being agreed before they negotiate with us) or revoke, IMO.

She's said she wants to leave in an orderly fashion (about 1,000,000,000 times, though I note she's dropped timely now!) but we can't without the WA which WON'T be reopened.

So we're just going round in bloody circles. It's just ridiculous and overwhelmingly frustrating.

Holidayshopping · 11/04/2019 10:05

So we're just going round in bloody circles.

Exactly! So what is she planning to do for the next 6 months?!

NoWordForFluffy · 11/04/2019 10:06

I don’t think so. My parents live in an area that voted strongly to leave. They report many people are reacting to the lack of Brexit by threatening never to vote again.

Given how few (proportionally) votes it'll take to swing to remain, and taking into account those leave voters who've died / changed their minds, this is brilliant news if there is another PV. Remain voters are probably MORE likely to vote and if leavers are less inclined, then that really works in remain's favour.

Sanctions at domestic level Sad But also at EU level Smile
For problematic digital political campaigns.

The Commission gives recommendations to the authorities and political parties and foundations in EU countries on how to ensure transparency of political advertising: political parties, foundations and campaign organisations should make information available for citizens on how much money they spend on online advertising in a campaign;they should clearly indicate which party or political support group is behind paid online political advertisements;they should share with European citizens information on how they are targeted in the dissemination of such advertisements;where these principles are not followed, Member States should apply relevant electoral sanctions

I'm sure we'll all miss their well-informed contributions to the democratic process.

missclimpson · 11/04/2019 10:15

I also think that if people can get their act together there could be a very strong Remain message sent via the European election results. I shall be off to our Mairie to remind them that I should still be able to vote on 22nd May.

Holidayshopping · 11/04/2019 10:22

Something different needs to happen now if we are going to avoid being in exactly the same situation on October 31st.

New leader of the Tories
GE
PV

Any other ideas??
