Westminstenders: Compromise is a difficult word

Today the HoC had a water leak. It closed the house for the day. This isn't without consequence; any hope for the opportunity of Indicative Votes on Monday had cold water poured on it.

Meanwhile talks between talks between May and Corbyn were about as productive as you'd imagine. But apparently they had nice tea and biscuits.

The Cooper Bill, the last minute lock on May getting a extension to prevent no deal, has been in the Lords today. I say it's been in the Lords but Tories have filibuster Ed on procedure for over 6 hours to prevent the chance of it passing the house. Tory whips are timetabled until 6am but the opposition benches have vowed to go to 7.30am. So far the votes to ruin the procedure have failed comfortably so the opposition have the number. Its just a question of time.

The trouble is with the Lords not sitting tomorrow that means the bill won't get passed until Monday and there are fears it won't get royal assent until Tuesday.

The bill doesn't prevent accidental no deal but it would be a barrier to May.

It therefore looks like May's gambit with the EU to get an extension is to say her plan is ongoing talks with Labour for a cross party solution. It won't wash.

No deal looks more and more likely.

The Irish story is a belated Aprils fool folks. Well spotted. DGR Smile
Fooled me, which isn't difficult. Blush

havingtochangeusernameagain · 05/04/2019 18:49

According to the Irish Times Nigel Farage has said he will stand in the EP elections for his Brexit party as they are now "certain to happen".

Do we think they'll get enough votes for an MEP? I asked about this before, how it works with PR if you choose not to stand against each other. The Libdems only had one MEP last time so you obviously need a lot of votes to get one (just saw it was over a million). A million votes for the Brexit party if UKIP fields candidates as well?

Also just saw that Alexander Stubb who used to be PM of Finland (and has a British wife) stood to be Spitzenkandidat for the EP but his political group chose Manfred Weber instead :( Stubb would have been better.

Pondering JRM's tweet. I don't think he is pondering a long extension at all. He is laying the groundwork to pivot to voting Revoke if it comes to a WA versus Revoke vote OR continue to oppose WA even if there is a Flextension with guillotine. (given No Deal is off the table)

End game for ERG is to dump TM and regroup for their Brexit.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/04/2019 18:50

Unfortunately, it was April Fool, so we can only hope her "precious Union" makes her stop No Deal

howabout · 05/04/2019 18:52

Actually further to JRM strategy a very bad couple of actual results for the Tories in EU and local elections would give ERG an awful lot of ammunition.

Icantreachthepretzels · 05/04/2019 18:52

If the PM really, really has bought a bolt hole in the rest of Europe (Ireland) over the last few weeks doesn't that imply the purchase was triggered because a bolt is about to be needed sooner rather than later?

If I were her, I'd bolt away a bit further than Ireland, tbh. I hear Outer Mongolia is lovely this time of year.

Peregrina · 05/04/2019 18:55

A pity that was an April Fool - Dunmore East is on the South coast, not far from Waterford. We had a delightful holiday in that area at the height of The Troubles in the North, and there was not a whisker of them happening near us.

It did rain a lot thought - that soft, gentle rain which soaks you right through to the skin.

eusers · 05/04/2019 18:55

So is the current thinking that we are crashing out?

BigChocFrenzy · 05/04/2019 18:55

I don't think it's politically possible for JRM to pivot to Revoke

His supporters are batshit and most would not understand
Also, he would fear what might happen to him if he is regarded as a traitor, what with the frenzy he has been whipping up the last 3 years

At the least, he'd lose support among Tory party members & Brexiters around the country and hence much of his influence

Hoo hoo this is pretty good

I'm not sure you can call 20% immigration into Boston 'barely any'. It's well known that it has a high rate of immigration.

It does have particularly interesting demographics, as this article says: www.irishtimes.com/news/world/uk/in-boston-lincolnshire-brexit-still-means-brexit-1.3445627?mode=amp

And it's no surprise that the talks have achieved nothing. TM just wants to brow beat Labour into accepting her deal face to face. That woman has to be the WORST negotiator I've ever come across.

Krishnan calling out Redwood as a liar on C4

AutumnCrow · 05/04/2019 19:13

And now Heidi Allen can't cite polls

AutumnCrow · 05/04/2019 19:15

Jesus Christ why can't Heidi Allen quite some fucking data when challenged - most posters on this thread could do better than this.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/04/2019 19:15

Slowly catching up on the thread as had a Brexit break over the weekend.

The other thing the Govt / TM has not really figured, is after the EU elections, the new EU negotiatiors may not have the patience of Donald Tusk / Jacques Barnier. TM should be grateful for a long extension if it is offered.

We need time for the ( few and far between) grown ups in the House of Commons to ramp up support for Revoke/ PV / GE ( in that order of preferences)

fluffy in Boston and surrounding areas the immigrants are almost exclusively fruit and veg pickers.

The indigenous population of Boston did not/would not so this work hence the immigration levels.

Peregrina · 05/04/2019 19:21

The indigenous population of Boston did not/would not so this work hence the immigration levels.

Were they a more elderly population before the E Europe fruit pickers came? In which case, they were probably physically unable to do the work productively.

1tisILeClerc · 05/04/2019 19:22

Independent was saying the UK has wasted about 66 Billion since the referendum. That will make a big hole in the 'rebuilding the UK' fund.
Ant that's before Brexit actually happens of course. Well done leavers.

67chevvyimpala · 05/04/2019 19:24

The type of work relies on young and fit workers as the work is hard and the hours are long.

Indigenous young people either move away for work or refuse to do it (pay, conditions....)

67chevvyimpala · 05/04/2019 19:25

...
And of course the local company/farm owners are happy to pay a pittance and provide inadequate conditions...

NoWordForFluffy · 05/04/2019 19:26

Yes, that's true. But it's not correct to say there's barely any immigration; that isn't right at all.

If you read the article, there's one of the lowest levels of unemployment but also some of the lowest standards of living. The ratio of people working but also qualifying for benefits is really high.

This is the reason that the locals voted leave in such a huge number, because in their eyes the problem is immigration driving locals wages down, causing the standard of living to be really poor.

It's very hard to explain to people in that mindset why they're conflating two or more issues and that immigration isn't the problem.

Boston isn't a nice place to live. They have huge issues with fighting / antisocial behaviour. When I had to visit a supplier there (a good while ago now, admittedly, in my previous career) we were told not to go out in Boston in the evening because it was unwise / unsafe. It hadn't improved since then, sadly.

67chevvyimpala · 05/04/2019 19:34

But I think that's true for many leave voting areas with far less immigration than Boston...

Austerity is what caused Brexit.
