Westminstenders: Compromise is a difficult word

Today the HoC had a water leak. It closed the house for the day. This isn't without consequence; any hope for the opportunity of Indicative Votes on Monday had cold water poured on it.

Meanwhile talks between talks between May and Corbyn were about as productive as you'd imagine. But apparently they had nice tea and biscuits.

The Cooper Bill, the last minute lock on May getting a extension to prevent no deal, has been in the Lords today. I say it's been in the Lords but Tories have filibuster Ed on procedure for over 6 hours to prevent the chance of it passing the house. Tory whips are timetabled until 6am but the opposition benches have vowed to go to 7.30am. So far the votes to ruin the procedure have failed comfortably so the opposition have the number. Its just a question of time.

The trouble is with the Lords not sitting tomorrow that means the bill won't get passed until Monday and there are fears it won't get royal assent until Tuesday.

The bill doesn't prevent accidental no deal but it would be a barrier to May.

It therefore looks like May's gambit with the EU to get an extension is to say her plan is ongoing talks with Labour for a cross party solution. It won't wash.

No deal looks more and more likely.

“Let it be known that the door remains open for the UK to remain a full member of the EU.”

Chair of the Greens/EFA in the European Parliament Philippe Lamberts MEP speaking this afternoon in Brussels on the UK's withdrawal from the European Union.

The Department of International Trade more or less believes we can pay the house hold bills cos we've got a lemonade stand out the front of the house.

Littlespaces The EU Council meeting, during which our extension request will be considered,
is Wednesday 10 April

What I would add to that schedule is that
by EOB Tuesday, May must have completed the Order in Council to organise EP elections

Soemhow, I don't think the EU would just take her word that it'll be done by EOB Friday

The 'fear of a flood of immigrants' is interesting. I live in a coastal village, about 30 miles from Dover. We have had 'illegals' pitch up on our beach, poor sods, and of course masses more nearer to Dover. I know, from about two years ago as a school gov, that they do put enormous pressure on the local authority in terms of what they must provide.

But they are nowhere to be seen locally; the local GP practice cant get doctors because no one wants to work here (lovely place, but masses of old people/little money). The schools are certainly not full of little Iraqi kids, or even 37 year olds pretending to be 17 to get an education (although I do know of one... and a couple more from other areas whose behaviour was more than difficult).

So the ACTUAL impact is minimal to most people's daily lives, the village facebook page is the most awful den of UKIP - but WHY?

BigChocFrenzy · 05/04/2019 18:17

Havingtochange If the EU refuse an extension, that is not "throwing us out"

It would be entirely the fault of the UK for getting into such a mess
and then not being able to make up its bloody mind what to do.

If the UK were a person, MN would declare it the ultimate CF
and Brexitzilla !

  • The EU have given us 2 years of patient, courteous negotiation,
despite the UK reneging, Brexit ministers not bothering to turn up, other ministers insulting the EU & its member nations

  • They have given us this current extension to 12 April

  • The UK could choose to approve the WA

  • The UK could choose to Revoke

The EU would welcome the UK as a functioning member, as it was before 2010
The current CF of a country has worn out its welcome

the village facebook page is the most awful den of UKIP - but WHY
Funded, sorted and activated right across SM targeting the chosen demographic.

yolo
DH and I lived in Dover in the 80s - long before free movement.
It was always a very isolationist area
and do not forget the impact of the mines and the closure of the coalfield ....

I feel like such an idiot. I held off booking anything for easter until about a month ago when it looked like there'd be a long extension. I can't remember what exactly made me optimistic that day but it was significant enough to book 4 days in Paris over Easter with Eurostar. And the tickets were really expensive! £1,000 for for of us for the Eurostar. I'm convinced were going to No Deal next Friday. I read an article that says queues of one mile at St Pancreas if we No Deal and this was the Yellow Hammer prediction. Apparently Eurostar can't make promises on any type as to whether they would refund of they need to cancel trains. Can't believe I booked Paris in April :-(

IrenetheQuaint · 05/04/2019 18:31

So talks with Labour are going nowhere and the EU leaders won't decide on an extension until Wednesday. And if we can't get our act together and submit a proper plan (including EU elections) we won't get an extension at all.

Hmm. Next week isn't going to be fun.

eusers · 05/04/2019 18:34

redtoothbrush it must be a spoof or April fool thing.

Wtf all those emojis no way just no way it can't be real.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 05/04/2019 18:36

Havingtochange If the EU refuse an extension, that is not "throwing us out"

Juncker's words, not mine.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 05/04/2019 18:37

Well, my optimism didn't last long.

Talks with Labour disintegrating.

Macron et al against long extension (don't blame them for a single second tbh but...)

Politics is meant to be boring ffs. I want dull and uneventful back.

prettybird · 05/04/2019 18:38

Brexitzilla needs to be incorporated into one of the Westministender thread titles Grin (if it hasn't already Wink)

67chevvyimpala · 05/04/2019 18:38

I think "edges" of countries are always a bit....odd.

TalkinPaece · 05/04/2019 18:40

@eusers
I've just checked on my twitter account
its very, very real

prettybird · 05/04/2019 18:42

Politics is meant to be boring ffs. I want dull and uneventful back.

Never has grey and boring John Major looked so statesmanlike and effective, given his small majority! Shock

(And yes, I was devastated when he got back in in 1992 Shock)

lonelyplanetmum · 05/04/2019 18:43

If the PM really, really has bought a bolt hole in the rest of Europe (Ireland) over the last few weeks doesn't that imply the purchase was triggered because a bolt is about to be needed sooner rather than later?

BigChocFrenzy · 05/04/2019 18:44

PR would become necessary if the 2 main parties split, or lose a large chunk of voters to smaller parties,
because FPTP with 3 or more parties of roughly similar size is VERY unstable:

It would mean the number of seats each gets is very dependent on how the support is geographically located and it also becomes hugely sensitive to tiny swings

YouGovv@YouGov*

So where are these voters going?

Primarily to "don't know" and to various smaller parties
- very few have switched between the main parties

https://t.co/mDfHSynjIY?amp=1

the crucial change over the last several months is that both main political parties now have a combined share of 63%, compared to the 80% share they enjoyed in December.

Support is falling away – but at the same rate.

Thanks, Tanith :)

BigChocFrenzy · 05/04/2019 18:47

If May's purchase actually happened, then she would want to avoid reigniting the Troubles - too near her bolthole
