Westminstenders: Compromise is a difficult word

Today the HoC had a water leak. It closed the house for the day. This isn't without consequence; any hope for the opportunity of Indicative Votes on Monday had cold water poured on it.

Meanwhile talks between talks between May and Corbyn were about as productive as you'd imagine. But apparently they had nice tea and biscuits.

The Cooper Bill, the last minute lock on May getting a extension to prevent no deal, has been in the Lords today. I say it's been in the Lords but Tories have filibuster Ed on procedure for over 6 hours to prevent the chance of it passing the house. Tory whips are timetabled until 6am but the opposition benches have vowed to go to 7.30am. So far the votes to ruin the procedure have failed comfortably so the opposition have the number. Its just a question of time.

The trouble is with the Lords not sitting tomorrow that means the bill won't get passed until Monday and there are fears it won't get royal assent until Tuesday.

The bill doesn't prevent accidental no deal but it would be a barrier to May.

It therefore looks like May's gambit with the EU to get an extension is to say her plan is ongoing talks with Labour for a cross party solution. It won't wash.

No deal looks more and more likely.

I'd be useless with those 'influencing' techniques, not least because I couldn't maintain the facade of thinking the of Leave voters I know as being 'brave' as opposed to 'stupid' and 'ill-informed'.... 😊

I think the low turnout in Newport is interesting, though entirely predictable.

IMO it is why Leave are so worried about a second referendum, knowing, as they do, it will be nigh on impossible to manipulate and motivate such people a second time. I mean, any time spent in the SHOUTY, MISSPELT OUTRAGE of any Leave FB page reveals many folk who consider their assertion that 'They'll never vote again' to be anything but music to the ears of Remainers!

Please don't.

So, personally, I don't fear riots and civil unrest if we revoked A50. Most Leave voters probably wouldn't even notice, given that none that I know (two with degrees!) have any clue, or any interest in following Brexit developments.

Sky reporting Donald Tusk is now formally calling on the rest of the EU to grant the flextension of up to a year

She's only asked til the end of June - is this their counter offer?

Wenttoseainasieve · 05/04/2019 09:08

May has requested an extension only to 30th June. Why?!

They said no to that last time!

Wenttoseainasieve · 05/04/2019 09:09

AND the flextension would mean we could leave earlier than a year if they get their shit together. Surely better?

She's currently planning to legislate for EP elections, which is some good news. I really hope to get to vote in them.

MockerstheFeManist · 05/04/2019 09:10

Brexit Day: 29 March. No, 12 April. Or 22 May.

Or possibly June 30

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-47825841

See that can go bouncing down the road?

If your a lib dem/ labour remainer, all this news this morning is good news.

if your a leaver i can sense a ' stitch up' - either way, the Tories will lose so many votes in a GE or local elections over all this. I dont see this a bad thing, but they always recover.
The breakfast show on ITV had a big count down clock., the disappeared long before last friday. The daily mail editor is a remainer - we have this kind of ' co- party' thing going on now, so everyone can get a bit of the blame ( not just tories) which is very clever , if you think about it.
big downside is the far right voters might ditch Tories in favour of UKIP or a new Farage party / BNP etc, so i cant see this problem going away even if there was an extension and remainers hope that people are going to 'forget all about it' or just move on.
it might just kick it a few hundred meters down the road till the next time. The average DM reader isnt happy at all, but i guess a lot will still stick with the conservatives? bit of a mess really and will rumble on forever.

MarshaBradyo · 05/04/2019 09:11

I’d be tired with her requests

Just do a year and tell us when you’re ready

Littlebelina · 05/04/2019 09:12

Can someone reboot Teresa? She is still stuck on last month's program.

(30th June FFS, doesn't solve EU elections issue)

Just putting this quote from Barry Gardiner out there again. Staying in the customs union would be "deeply unattractive".

Some have suggested we should retain membership of the customs union, the benefits of which extend to goods rather than services, and establish common import tariffs with respect to the rest of the world. But that is not possible. The only members of this union are the member states of the EU, and they alone have negotiating power.

Other countries such as Turkey have a separate customs union agreement with the EU. If we were to have a similar agreement, several things would follow: the EU’s 27 members would set the common tariffs and Britain would have no say in how they were set. We would be unable to enter into any separate bilateral free trade agreement. We would be obliged to align our regulatory regime with the EU in all areas covered by the union, without any say in the rules we had to adopt. And we would be bound by the case law of the ECJ, even though we would have no power to bring a case to the court.

As a transitional phase, a customs union agreement might be thought to have some merit. However, as an end point it is deeply unattractive. It would preclude us from making our own independent trade agreements with our five largest export markets outside the EU (the US, China, Japan, Australia and the Gulf states).

The80sweregreat · 05/04/2019 09:12

I really do think they are hoping this will all just ' go away', get covered up and never spoken of again.

Bearbehind · 05/04/2019 09:13

They said no to 30th June because of the EP elections though didn’t they. TMs letter says they will prepare for those now.

It’s game playing - she’s asked for 30th June to look tough, the EU seem to be proposing offering a year so we’ll get the latter with the option of leaving sooner if we sort our shit out, which we won’t.

lonelyplanetmum · 05/04/2019 09:13

and of course I understand and respect their views .

MockerstheFeManist · 05/04/2019 09:14

I think Plan B is to run away, very soon, blaming Corbyn.

The80sweregreat · 05/04/2019 09:15

I bet all the prices that have risen wont go down though.
The really big corporations will still blame brexit, even if its not happening just yet and cash in and make people redundant on ' what could happen next' -

Ok, now read letter. So we'll have elections but leave just over a month later? What a waste of money. This appears to be about appeasing the ERG (who don't want a long extension) I suspect. Just take the year and leave earlier if we can. If we have to go back again for another extension on the 30th grrrrr

AngryAngryAngry Gove!! AngryAngryAngry

My DD is 9. Her school has set homework to practise times tables up to 100 every week for the last 3 years.
She’s failing them, not because she doesn’t know them - she does - but because she doesn’t have instant recall on every single one. And I mean instant: poor kids are timed Angry

What a bloody waste of time and stress! How to put a child off maths for life!

MockerstheFeManist · 05/04/2019 09:17

The price rises are a product of all the stockpiling in new warehouses. Those costs don't change.

And C4 News last night said $1 Trillion Dollars has left the UK so far with more going every day.
