Westminstenders: The May Compromise

After a marathon cabinet meeting, which no one seems to have resigned from, May has had another podium moment.

This time instead of blaming everyone but herself, she's gone for the 'let's compromise approach' to Corbyn.

This comes after Nick Boles crossed the floor saying his side wasn't prepared to compromise on anything after May secretly whipped on a 'free' vote against him.

May also said she we needed more of an extension to the 22nd May but without promise of EU elections this means No Deal inevitable if May can't pass the WA by then. Provided EU allow an extension until then without EU elections.

She also hinted at respecting a majority idea over indicative votes, if she and Corbyn fail to agree - remembering she tried successfully to sabotage that last night.

Already many are saying this is a trap to ensnare others into the mess that is Brexit in the blame game. With no deal ultimately the end goal.

The idea that May can find a compromise with Corbyn seems a fantasy.

And the EU might have every reason to refuse a longer extension under the circumstances.

For May to compromise she surely would have to break the Tories to do it as Labour will only go for a soft option which is unacceptable to the ERG. Unless her idea of compromise is simply its the WA or No deal which it seems hard to conceive Labour going near with the realistic prospect of the next PM being a hardliner.

All in all it seems more likely to be a framing exercise in damage limitation rather than something which has more substance and a realistic prospect of working. And if that's really the case, it certainly would explain why no one's resigned yet.

Indicative Votes 3 and a pretty dodgy Cooper Amendment designed to be a last ditch attempt to prevent no deal are both scheduled.

Its desparation stakes and the EU more or less have us down as a failed state. And the pro Brexit bombs don't really add much optimist to the mood.

Tell that to TM bigchoc at least JC has tried to compromise whether by choice or pushed to do so. She has never budged an inch and never will. Sorry!Wine

Flowerplower · 02/04/2019 20:37

I wish that was my cat woman19 but it's prettybird's. Thank you for posting a photo of the gorgeous beast!

The80sweregreat · 02/04/2019 20:37

Leave would win again. Another vote isn't always a good idea. Not yet anyway.
We need a deal and leave in an orderly manner as she says. This isn't what mumsnetters wants but it's better than no deal. Rock and a hard place.

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 20:37

Louise do you not understand that JC walking out was staged by TM?

Been through this before. No. It wasn't. And if it was, JC was a child who walked right into the trap of looking like a petulant child.

Which version would you like? No it wasn't a trap or yes it was and Corbyn still decided to throw the toys of of his pram so that May could look good?

PMK. Going back to read it all now.

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 20:38

So basically she’s trying to get us to point where it’s too late to hold EP elections so they have to go for her deal but as a safeguard for if that fails EP elections will be Corbyn’s fault to be trotted out against him at next election if he is still leader. Is that right?

Of course

BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2019 20:39

sos Chuka is the leader of the 4th largest grouping in the HoC

Corbyn has a reputation for hating being in the same room as opponents and absolutely despising anyone who defies him, let alone those who quit becauise of him

That was all about Corbyn putting his ego before the country
like May puts party before country

Holidayshopping · 02/04/2019 20:40

When would EU elections have to be held by?

wafflyversatile · 02/04/2019 20:41

Another: "She's just legitimised Corbyn
Goes to show what a load of gobshites they are with only a care for their own power. . He's the legitimate leader of the opposition. She could and should have been working cross party a long time ago.

So this will just be about trying to force
Her own WA through or blame corbyn for what is her and her party's Fuck up.

DangermousesSidekick · 02/04/2019 20:41

I think it is dangerous to assume Johnson actually believes what he says, it’s all aimed at his Leadership bid.

That's why I think he is scum a dishonourable twerp. He'll do anything and say anything to anyone that might at any given moment help him along his own path. He doesn't need the money exactly does he.

horseshit · 02/04/2019 20:42

HazardGhost · 02/04/2019 20:42

I've run out of email addresses to lobby lobby lobby (said again in a Mr blobby voice).

BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2019 20:43

I doubt if the EU will let the trap be set in the first place, for either themselves or Labour

I expect in 10 April EU Council meeting that

No legislation for EP elections = No extension permitted by the EU

If May is sincere, she'll whip for the elections before 10 April
If not, she's just playing "Pass the Blame"

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 20:44

EU election need to be legislated by the 10th April to be held between 23 and 25 May.

Tbf to May on this, there's no way she'd get legislation for the EP on Tory votes if she did want to go down that root. She would have to butter up Labour to get a majority.

Louise your comments about us wanting may to compromise for months and then moaning when she tries it, owe more to how she can't be trusted than the compromise bit.

Corbyn has always been the most fully aligned with May in cock-eyed Brexit vision. The only area they disagree on is the CU and workers’ rights.

I have always feared the Lexiters and Brexiters striking a deal and fucking Labour as completely as the Coalition did the LDs.

Secret Diary of an MP today was pretty damning of the fact that, actually Labour still don’t have a Brexit strategy.

Random18 · 02/04/2019 20:45

Something not right with johnson’s Interview.

Very controlled and calculating. I know he wants to be PM but i almost got the impression he knows exactly what TM’s plan is.

icannotremember · 02/04/2019 20:45

I'll agree a lot of leave votes were motivated by wanting to reduce immigration to the UK. I don't think most leave voters thought much about trade deals other than to believe the claptrap from the sunlit fucking unicorn land brigade about it all being so much better and only gain if we left.

user1471429825 · 02/04/2019 20:45

Supposing the worst happens and we go no deal, regardless of how anyone voted is there actually anyone out there believe this absolute shit show of a Government would be able to negotiate us out of it with anything resembling a good deal ?

Time after time the EU have proven to be far shrewder operators than we are. They managed to get agreement with 27 countries we can’t even manage it with a 22 cabinet ministers. For this reason alone no deal is a bad idea.

TatianaLarina · 02/04/2019 20:46

She's just legitimised Corbyn

Scapegoated more like.

TheElementsSong · 02/04/2019 20:46

PMK!

TM is clearly trying to spread the blame for Brexit onto Corbyn. I have no sympathy for him because he wants Brexit too, whilst trying to keep the blame on the Tories. They deserve each other. Plus if Brexit was such a brilliant idea and stunning success, they'd be trying to keep all the credit to themselves - says all you need to know about Brexit that they're not.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2019 20:47

holidayshopping EU elections must take place in all member countries 23-26 May,
or otherwise the new European Parliament decisions may be declaared illegal

In order for the Uk to hold these elections, the latest possible date to pass legislation for this is 12 April

However, the EU Council meeting to decide on an extension is 10 April
So realistically, Parliament needs to have legislated by EOB of 9 April to hold EP elections

then May is able to present a good case to the EU to grant her an extension
Only one EU country need veto for it to be refused
so she needs to make her case properly

Sostenueto · 02/04/2019 20:47

Look we all know JC isn't the brightest spark and I think we all know about TMs traps. So nuff said on that subject. Chukka is not if any account and NIR are any of the riggers in reality no matter his many if them there are. They were all elected on their previous parties manifestos and unless I blinked and missed it they haven't been elected as representatives of tig which is not a political party yet by the people ( sigh). So there you go. Only my opinion mind, only my opinion ( sigh). Here's to all Gin

That is definitely a 'I don't give a shit about Brexit' pose! (by your cat).

Bearbehind · 02/04/2019 20:49

I’ve yet to see a single Leaver name a trade deal we want that couldn’t have done before.

It’s truly astounding that they have literally zero examples of this yet it’s still quoted.
