Westminstenders: The May Compromise

After a marathon cabinet meeting, which no one seems to have resigned from, May has had another podium moment.

This time instead of blaming everyone but herself, she's gone for the 'let's compromise approach' to Corbyn.

This comes after Nick Boles crossed the floor saying his side wasn't prepared to compromise on anything after May secretly whipped on a 'free' vote against him.

May also said she we needed more of an extension to the 22nd May but without promise of EU elections this means No Deal inevitable if May can't pass the WA by then. Provided EU allow an extension until then without EU elections.

She also hinted at respecting a majority idea over indicative votes, if she and Corbyn fail to agree - remembering she tried successfully to sabotage that last night.

Already many are saying this is a trap to ensnare others into the mess that is Brexit in the blame game. With no deal ultimately the end goal.

The idea that May can find a compromise with Corbyn seems a fantasy.

And the EU might have every reason to refuse a longer extension under the circumstances.

For May to compromise she surely would have to break the Tories to do it as Labour will only go for a soft option which is unacceptable to the ERG. Unless her idea of compromise is simply its the WA or No deal which it seems hard to conceive Labour going near with the realistic prospect of the next PM being a hardliner.

All in all it seems more likely to be a framing exercise in damage limitation rather than something which has more substance and a realistic prospect of working. And if that's really the case, it certainly would explain why no one's resigned yet.

Indicative Votes 3 and a pretty dodgy Cooper Amendment designed to be a last ditch attempt to prevent no deal are both scheduled.

Its desparation stakes and the EU more or less have us down as a failed state. And the pro Brexit bombs don't really add much optimist to the mood.

So, participation in the EU elections then.

Unless they remarkably agree something in the next couple of days realistically.

Self serving bastards

BigChocFrenzy · 03/04/2019 17:15

I wonder if Juncker has checked with all E27 leaders about that long extension ?

Won't be popular in Germany and I heard Macron has been discouraging

Anyway, if the HoC don't legislate for EP elections by EOB Monday, there won't be any extension

RedToothBrush · 03/04/2019 17:15

Remember the minister who harassed universities over EU law teaching

Chris Heaton-Harris @ cchcalling
After much contemplation, I have decided to leave Theresa May's Government. I'm grateful to the PM for giving me the opportunity to serve the UK and I will continue to represent my constituents as the MP for Daventry.

I had a Scottish event at dc's international school recently, 85% of dc thought that Scotland's national animal was Nessie when given a choice between that and a unicorn. I wasn't surprised by that, the English parents who could only be convinced by google did surprise me more. It was thought to be a super cool national animal though.

OublietteBravo · 03/04/2019 17:16

Mark Carney has told Sky News the risk of a no-deal Brexit is now "alarmingly high", branding suggestions it could be managed as "absolute nonsense".

Dear MPs. Please listen to the nice man who is in charge of the Bank of England. “Managed” Brexit (a la Malthouse) is a fucking unicorn.

DGRossetti · 03/04/2019 17:16

I can't agree with Laura Ks analysis that May is putting a deal ahead of party, by the way.

It might look like that. Because it's meant to. Doesn't mean it is ...

What might the tiggers trigger? --

Sorry couldn't resist--

RedToothBrush · 03/04/2019 17:17

Theo Usherwood@theousherwood
These two paragraphs in Chris Heaton-Harris’s resignation letter are fairly extraordinary: accusation that Mrs May has not received accurate briefings about how advanced the Government’s preparations for a No Deal Brexit are.

Let's hope we don't have to test this out. Cos I will not forget this.

I've got one very good mep, so I'm going to start clearing my Saturdays so I can go out and help campaign for them after Easter. I'll need my flame proof pants on I reckon when I do so.

Camomila · 03/04/2019 17:17

Who wanted to censure Brexit university courses? Not sure it's worked anyway, we talk about Brexit all the time at university (social science course) Although lately when we need examples of stuff everyone shouts 'not Brexit again'

The best toastie combo imo is cheap melty cheese singles and nice prosciutto cotto in one of those triangle toastie makers. It was the only meal my nonno could cook! Instant return to childhood when I eat one.

I haven't seen any 4pm statement on the bbc news website Confused

yup Maud. Completely agree. Our loss.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/04/2019 17:18

MPs don't listen to the EU about no minideals and certainly won't listen to an expert like Carney

They think the EU will continue to let them dither, or invent their own WA

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 03/04/2019 17:19

Such a shame about Heaton-Harris. I do hope the door doesn't hit his arse too hard on the way out.

DGRossetti · 03/04/2019 17:19

I wonder if Juncker has checked with all E27 leaders about that long extension ?

Guaranteed he has. Just because the UK couldn't run a whelk stall, doesn't mean everyone else is as incompetent.

He will have either checked, or has a brief with options depending on circumstances.

SassyBadger · 03/04/2019 17:20

So Lynton Crosby's firm is revealed as being behind the pro hard-Brexit 'grassroots' ads on Facebook. Surprise sur-fucking -prise. Whose money has paid for them though...

DG I an only think May is desperately trying to work with Corbyn
because delaying Brexit and even talking to him is wrecking her party and its election prospects, at least in the short term

  • we can expect Tory voters to punish her for this in the local elections, by staying home or voting for one of the Brexit parties
EweSurname · 03/04/2019 17:22

Facebook Brexit ads secretly run by staff of Lynton Crosby firm
Exclusive: ‘grassroots’ groups that spent up to £1m on targeted Facebook ads share administrator who works for lobbying firm

I read that H-H felt a no deal was perfectly possible.

BercowsSilkTie · 03/04/2019 17:23

Are they voting now?

InterchangeableEmma · 03/04/2019 17:23

So did I just I thought he was suggesting that civil servants were giving May a falsely negative impression of what a no deal Brexit would look like.
Hmm, who to believe, him or Mark Carney? Decisions, Decisions.

BercowsSilkTie · 03/04/2019 17:26

What's going on?! I've been cooking dinner and lost
