Westminstenders: Happy Brexit Day!

Happy Brexit day!

Oh wait. No its not.

May looks like she is going to bring the MVIII (Meaningful Vote 3) tomorrow minus the PD (political declaration).

The legalities of this are questionable should the vote pass. The MV needs to have an accompanying PD, by law under the terms of the Withdrawal Act.

That's kind of irrelevant given the likelihood of the deal passing anyway. The DUP have apparently negotiated a 'Stormont Lock' to get more assurances, only for them promptly to say there's no chance of them voting for the deal anyway.

The vote is all about Labour v Conservatives and where we can lay the blame for no deal in two weeks time.

Meanwhile we are already into a prolonged Tory Leader Election with all its glorious gentlemanly behaviour.

Anyway its time for extra time and national riots for delaying Brexit.

Keir Starmer sounding deliciously angry on R4 just now. Dismisses IDS with "I don't think we need to listen to him"

I reckon KS will launch a leadership bid soon. Or that could be wishful thinking ....

PostNotInHaste · 29/03/2019 07:48

I was kind of OK about the WA going through but not now separated from PD and change of leader. Do we expect any resignations today?

OutwithMyRemit · 29/03/2019 07:49

Does anyone know what time the vote is likely to be at today? Can't find anything online. Hoping it'll be sooner rather than later.

LonelyTiredandLow · 29/03/2019 07:50

I know much has been discussed about the effect of the probably violent leave rally today on MP's but I do think that this, TM's renewed No Deal threats as well as the threat of an unknown ERG PM if her vote goes through may well work in favour of stopping WA. I am struggling to understand why anyone would again vote for uncertainty (with PM), when indicative votes have only just begun and there are some new options on the table. It's an optimistic time for Remainers in many respects and I personally think MP's who may have voted for it before might now back track.

TheABC · 29/03/2019 07:52

I am going to stick my neck out and say the WA won't pass. Labour won't. ERG is split. The DUP won't . Just not enough votes. And if you think we are angry, imagine how the various groups in Parliament feel at the moment.

BercowsSilkTie · 29/03/2019 07:54

I don't think it will pass. Too many angry and against TM.

We have our EU flag flying from the house today 🇪🇺

{ Yaxley-Lennon's pissed-up knuckle-draggers out in force.}

I wonder if their mothers are proud of them?

jasjas1973 · 29/03/2019 07:58

I hope and pray you are correct Lonely

I fear too many Hoeys and Flints in the Labour party.

RHTawneyonabus · 29/03/2019 07:59

My money is on Sajid, a much more impressive person than any of the other contenders.

67chevvyimpala · 29/03/2019 08:01

Honestly can't call it.

The erg and DUP are duplicitous fuckers who will do whatever it takes to further their own ends

The "opposition" are also split.

I hope we are still in the EU at the may local elections and that we take part in the EU elections as I think the results will be interesting

BiglyBadgers · 29/03/2019 08:06

The WA won't pass today. It is dead, not sleeping or just having a lie down. Well and truly dead.

No deal is a real possibility, but if talk of the soft brexit folks getting together after the indicative votes are correct then I see a chance of a long extension (and maybe PV) with CU/SM type deal.

And here is my far more important place cat marking.

Happy not brexit day.

Westminstenders: Happy Brexit Day!
Eyewhisker · 29/03/2019 08:09

The DUP will never vote for the WA, as the backstop is more important to them than money. They abstained on EEA though, indicating they could live with it. The WA will fail again today unless there’s a huge Labour rebellion.

But not sure where that leaves us... The Indicative Votes seems too slow, I can’t see how a General Election would help with both parties too split and May has ruled out a People’s Vote. Is she just going to go for No Deal?

RedToothBrush · 29/03/2019 08:09

David Allen Green@davidallengreen
Thought - presumably in a long extension, will our new EU passports be the blue ones?

Because if we can have both blue passports and membership of the EU, both sides can call a draw, and we can call off Brexit.

Songsofexperience · 29/03/2019 08:13

That would be so amazing. I would totally embrace the blue passport. EU blue.

woman19 · 29/03/2019 08:15

Happy Not Brexit Day. Smile

Holidayshopping · 29/03/2019 08:15

I actually really like Keir Starmer-wonder if he would go for leadership if there was a GE and Labour stood a chance of getting rid of the Tories if he did?

vanitythynameisnotwoman · 29/03/2019 08:16

Long time lurker and early-days poster-under-another-name here - is that really annoying that we crawl out of the woodwork now? I have very few RL people I can talk to about this so I would like to switch from reading to posting - if I can keep up!

I think it will pass. I watched a fair bit of proceedings live on Wednesday and during? after? PMQs TM said the JC had said if she separated them, Labour didn't oppose the content of the WA, just the PD. Some other Labour MPs later agreed.

So I think there are enough Labour MPs unless they oppose because they don't trust her to change the PD rather than because they oppose per se.

Have a really busy day at work - I'll have a live online news feed behind everything else I expect. Thank you so much to Red, BCF, DGR and others for your persistence and wisdom.

woman19 · 29/03/2019 08:20

The thuggery planned to occur outside the HOC may well have been choreographed to disrupt today's proceedings inside the House, in so many ways. Sounds like the vote is being timed to coincide with the late afternoon start of the 'performance'.

GeistohneGrenzen · 29/03/2019 08:23

PMK

woman19 · 29/03/2019 08:27

People are wishing each other Happy Non Brexit day on FB too!
I'd prefer to call it Happy European Union Day.Smile
Gelukkige dag van de Europese Unie Smile
Glücklicher Tag der Europäischen Union Smile
Joyeuse journée de l'Union européenne Smile

CordeliaEarhart · 29/03/2019 08:34

WA going through but not now separated from PD

The WA cannot be so easily separated from the PD. Calling it a "blind Brexit" was Labours first port of call, but there are a few QCs on twitter who are saying that due to the wording of one of the articles, passing the WA actually means that they would have agreed to the PD as well. I don't know how correct they are, but it is concerning that MPs are being expected to vote on something when there is disagreement among legal experts of what agreeing to it actually means.

1tisILeClerc · 29/03/2019 08:34

Although it is wrong to advocate violence but I think a bit of a 'scuffle' between the 'bad boys' and the army/police in London might just wake the sleeping beauties in Westminster up as to what their incompetence is actually doing to the UK. As long as no 'Remainers' get hurt it would be 'useful'.

PostNotInHaste · 29/03/2019 08:36

Thanks Codelia. Agree very concerning but not in the least surprising. Spent drive to school explain to two teens why it was ok for no one way forward to have been voted for on Wednesday, that it was pretty much expected and part of a process.

Camomila · 29/03/2019 08:37

Buona Continuazione!

(I'm not sure if I've spelt that right, but it means happy continuation in Italian)

At 2.30 I will try prayer/positive thinking...I usually zone out during the meditation bit at yoga but on Wednesday I actually tried concentrating really hard on 'please can I have a job' and boom! 2 job interviews plus another application has extended their deadline for me Smile
