Westminstenders: Happy Brexit Day!

Happy Brexit day!

Oh wait. No its not.

May looks like she is going to bring the MVIII (Meaningful Vote 3) tomorrow minus the PD (political declaration).

The legalities of this are questionable should the vote pass. The MV needs to have an accompanying PD, by law under the terms of the Withdrawal Act.

That's kind of irrelevant given the likelihood of the deal passing anyway. The DUP have apparently negotiated a 'Stormont Lock' to get more assurances, only for them promptly to say there's no chance of them voting for the deal anyway.

The vote is all about Labour v Conservatives and where we can lay the blame for no deal in two weeks time.

Meanwhile we are already into a prolonged Tory Leader Election with all its glorious gentlemanly behaviour.

Anyway its time for extra time and national riots for delaying Brexit.

Nick Boles MP @NickBoles
A broad cross-party group including MPs from five parties and both Leavers and Remainers has just laid the Common Market 2.0 motion for Monday. No other compromise has the same breadth of support.

Opportunist at every turn blowing the way that might get him in - I have no time for him at all

DGRossetti · 29/03/2019 16:55

Corbyns "get out" is to parrot he's "respecting the referendum". A lamentable and costly abrogation of personal responsibility. Civil servants get to say they are "respecting the will of parliament" to excuse having to call disabled people "lying bitches" as part of their jobs, but elected MPs should not act as if they are mere marionettes of the electorate.

After all, if that's really what they are, then why not dump the lot of them and have government by direct vote ?

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 29/03/2019 16:55

Oh the absolute state of that lot.

RedToothBrush · 29/03/2019 16:55

KLAXON

Nicholas Watt @nicholaswatt
Nigel Dodds tells me the UK should stay in the EU if that was only way to preserve NI’s place in UK. ‘I would stay in the European Union and remain rather than risk Northern Ireland’s position. That’s how strongly I feel about the union.’

Nigel Dodds went on: So yes, the answer must be something that works for the whole of the United Kingdom – that’s our first and main priority.

What a shambles! I remain unsurprised by what a mess parliament are making of all this.
I kind of know but not properly so can someone explain what common market 2.0 is??

The80sweregreat · 29/03/2019 16:56

Corbyn ( according to James o Brien) wants to renationalise the trains so being 'out' suits him as the EU is a barrier to this. Why i don't know to be honest but it's one of his policies.
He tends to waffle on a bit and is good at being 'vague' but I do think his a kind of hybrid ' one foot in, one out' kind of guy.
His main aim is to have another Election. Always has been. Which will end in humiliation. He just can't see it.

RedToothBrush · 29/03/2019 16:57

Is that the 'oh bollocks, this isnt going to bust the GFA' moment and admission?

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 29/03/2019 16:57

Just back from work and finally up to date

red Like you, I'm very worried this further increases the risk of No Deal, on 12 April

The EU statements are that they think this likely
I listen to what they say.

Guy Verhofstadt very pointedly said they would extend if MPs want to change the PD
He didn't say change the WA - I'd be astonished if the EU give way on that

Obvious why the EU want any new plan / PD to have cross-party support: a GE is quite likely shortly after Brexit.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 29/03/2019 16:59

Don't recall the speakers last Saturday getting wall-to-wall coverage on the state broadcaster - did they?

They're trailing Yaxley-Lennon and Farage's speeches as if they're legitimate politicians not rabble-rousing weaselly fuckwits.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/03/2019 16:59

Wow, just read Dodds statement !

The DUP blinked !

That could change everything
I feel much more optimistic now Smile

Sorry Marsha you are right and also apologies for the DM although it is quoting from a book about Corbyn.
I do think he’s always supported Brexit though.

RedToothBrush · 29/03/2019 16:59

Faisal Islam @faisalislam
Minister tells me of a meeting of ministers with the PM in Downing St now following the third defeat of her Withdrawal Agreement... not about standing down but significant, nonetheless.

This delegation of ministers in Downing Street is urging the PM to say no to a softer Brexit and to go for No Deal Brexit

This, of course, would screw the DUP royally

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 29/03/2019 17:01

The DUP voting with moderate tories, Labour and others would make a majority.

Now they just have to find the thing they can agree on...

BiglyBadgers · 29/03/2019 17:04

Bloody hell, the DUP are turning up to the revoke party a little bit late in the day. They finally seem to have got the actual implications bit brexit. Hmm

So now we just have to wait and see if parliament can knock something together before the 12th and make May take it to the EU. Yikes.

DGRossetti · 29/03/2019 17:05

The cynic in me (from a vague understanding) is that while the EU has no issue with member states nationalising infrastructure (look at France) there has to be a proper tender process. You can't just award the gig to your preferred choice. And therein lies the rub. It's unlikely any British company or combination under state control could deliver a realistic tender. Look how shit they are now.

I wouldn't mind betting that requirement - of needing a proper tender process - was originally a UK idea too.

bellinisurge · 29/03/2019 17:06

@RedToothBrush , that Nigel Dodds comment could be what people younger than I am call a game changer.

DGRossetti · 29/03/2019 17:07

@RedToothBrush , that Nigel Dodds comment could be what people younger than I am call a game changer.

Could the DUP trigger a general election ?

HazardGhost · 29/03/2019 17:07

Seriously the DUP are going to save the day? The party with members who think being gay is similar to being a sex offender? That lot are behaving more thoughfully and with more care of our union then the PM and cabinet?

Okay...

The80sweregreat · 29/03/2019 17:10

A lot of remainers also write on the daily mail comments pages ; someone wrote on Wednesday that Arlene Foster has ' saved the U.K. from itself' regarding how they vote.
If they vote for revoke , they really will!
'Mark four WA 'might make a reappearance too. She is very fond of those 585 pages.

DGRossetti · 29/03/2019 17:10

Seriously the DUP are going to save the day? The party with members who think being gay is similar to being a sex offender? That lot are behaving more thoughfully and with more care of our union then the PM and cabinet?

Why not ? Is it any more fantastic (in the true sense of the word) than anything else.

Given they are all that stand between Theresa May and a General Election, this should be headline news.

Bet it isn't though. There are much more important vox pops to be had with the "major demonstration" for Brexit.

prettybird · 29/03/2019 17:11

My gut feel is that Labour might get the most seats in a GE - but that Parliament would be even more "hung". Confused

But who knows? ShockConfused Our FPTP system is fucked Sad. And unless Labour changes its tune it is also fucked as so many people are angry at the constant assertion that "81% supposedly voted for Brexit" Angry. Labour has to put a PV into the Manifesto and that it would respect the result. Preferably, it should say it was neutral on the result (or even pro-EU) in the Manifesto - but I'm not going to wish for unicorns Wink especially with the Lexiter Corbyn still in charge Hmm

Mistigri · 29/03/2019 17:11

A broad cross-party group including MPs from five parties and both Leavers and Remainers has just laid the Common Market 2.0 motion for Monday.

They still need to pass the WA though. It's good that people are compromising, but they needed to do this in 2017, before the WA was set in stone.

The big push now should be to participate in the EP elections otherwise Boles is wasting his time.

Pour la famille Hamilton, le maire de Londres est musulman et « c’est un problème ». « Il cherche à bannir la vente du bacon. Nous le voulons pendu et découpé en morceaux », dit Matilda

I don't speak French, but Google translate gives me:

For the Hamilton family, the mayor of London is Muslim and "it's a problem". "He's trying to ban the sale of bacon. We want it hanged and cut into pieces, "says Matilda

They're a lovely wholesome-looking family. Genuinely. Wonder if they're MNers.

Mistigri · 29/03/2019 17:13

Éléments, if that is an accurate transcription of what they said, it's Khan they want to cut into pieces ...
